My sister and her husband in Florida they didn't know this kind of mushroom is edible, because it's filled with spores! Now I know the young ones would be solid white inside and could be cooked so many ways! Thank You so much for sharing this info!!!

You are spot on. The young ones are the target. Should look like a Snow White marshmallow inside. Bon appetite! Ranger Reno

Oh man do I miss living in mid BC Canada!!! I love puffball mushrooms!! and would eat myself silly during mushroom season... 😁Living way out in the country/forest in BC and always foraging for eatables during the different seasons, the biggest puffball mushroom I've ever found was the size of a medium beach-ball and weighed in at almost 8lbs. I found 4 smaller but still good size ones that foraging trip too and thought for sure, the big puffball would be way overripe... Turned out that the smaller puffballs were to far gone, had little black spore specks throughout the whole ball but, the gigantic puffball was pure white all the way through! I took lots of pictures of that giant! And also lots of pictures while cleaning it, slicing it and cooking/frying my huge steak. I gave two large steaks to a friend of ours that also loves puffballs and the rest of the puffball, which was still a lot!! I cut down into cubes and put them in my dehydrator until they were totally dry and shelf stable in oxygen free mason jars. Those dry cubes I used as regular mushrooms in stews etc. Moved to Sweden a few yrs. back and even if my house/homestead over here is out in the forest and I pick all the eatable mushrooms I can find. I have yet to find a puffball.... 😢

Thank you for watching and for your comment. I wish you could still find them as well. They are delicious. I should start seeing them beginning this week. We got some rain and the time is right. All the best

@@rangerreno1249 I really wish that too. But, until I'm able to find any over here, you find a couple extra for me. 😊 I really don't understand why I wouldn't be able to find them over here. It's basically the same climate here, winters, summers etc. Perhaps I could find someone online that sells spores or the likes. I do know you can buy various mushroom spawn and grow your own mushrooms. No reason why they couldn't sell the puffball spawns too... I'm going to go in search!!

I don't believe I have seen any in my woods but I really haven't looked! I will be in there this weekend and will keep my eyes peeled. Probably late but I know what to look for next season! Excellent cooking segment!

I like to freeze it sliced with the skin on. The skin preserves the meat's own taste and consistency. I remove them when they thaw. I can try out different things with the frozen slices.@@rangerreno1249

When do I start looking for these giant puffballs? I know that I get them in my woods too.
@rangerreno12492 жыл бұрын
First week of September through about October 15. Make sure they are Snow White on the inside No yellow, brown, etc. This is best obtained by picking them when they are young. They will grow exponentially overnight. Grapefruit to soccer ball size is usually perfect.

Awesome. By me the drought set us back. Found several but not like years past when rain was plentiful. Hope you can enjoy it grilled, fried etc. Thanks for her comment ! Ranger Reno

Totally edible. Just make sure the flesh is snow white. No discoloration. Just pulled some from the freezer and used in Alfredo sauce.
