We tested the top of the line Fox Live Valve-equipped Giant Trance X at the last Field Test, and were curious about how the value version stacked up, without a carbon frame and that pricey robot-controlled rear suspension.

It's funny when they review the top dollar models, and then recommend the ones that are one or two steps down in price nearly every time; especially when the only difference is the addition of an AXS/X01 drivetrain and dropper

I have had this bike since October and have put about 250 trail miles on it. I agree with a lot of things on this review. It is my first FS and it really is a beast for that. of course it does not compare to its $4000+ competitors but it is not meant to. I live in New England so we are all chunky tech and it rips this stuff up. I do have upgrade plans to move past the SX because it lacks there but right now I want to ride it till it breaks. The X2 is a great bike also. I highly recommend this bike to anyone who is looking in the $2500 range for a trail ripper, it may not be perfect but it will definitely give you a smile on your face

I have a Giant Trance X 29-2, which has some upgrades from the 29-3. I do agree that the suspension is 'active' and usually switch the DPS to the down position when climbing. Takes about .5 seconds to do that. It really helps, though this bike will never climb like a hardtail but the downhills on this bike are sick! Very stable and smooth in the open positions and it will keep you from breaking a collarbone, or worse. It is heavy but lighter wheels and tires would be a good start to approaching the 30lb/13.6kg mark (that's my eventual goal).

Ive had mine TX3 since march and i agree with the rear suspension. DPS is the worst shock ive ever owned, switched it out for a dpx2 factory after a few rides and maan, what a difference. Can honestly say that this bike is the best ive ever had! Also changed the Derailleur to gx(much needed), and maxed out volume spacers in both rear and fork suspension. With RS gold you can easily increase travel to 160mm by simply removing one spacer inside the fork. With these changes, the bike is way more playful and fast. I did not think i would keep the fork but it really is alright after some tweeks.

Giant does a good job of explaining how their Maestro suspension avoids robbing you of pedaling power from a pedal bob perspective and it makes sense in a purely kinematic way, but what I'm getting here is that the "fully active" aspect of their suspension (which they also push in their marketing) is absorbing too much on the climbs when you just want your back wheel to pop over stuff. Is that it? ...by the way, this is the review I've been looking for, a basic performance assessment of the entry/mid model on what matters to entry/mid riders. Thanks.

Frame was completely replaced by Giant under warranty in 1 month of owning cause a weird crazy noise, and the Sram shifting is tremendously horrible. My rear brakes completely went out causing me to crash hardcore and end up in hospital. The guys at Dons Bicycles in Redlands CA where purchased felt so bad and were baffled of all these failures of brand new bike. They hooked me up with upgraded slx Shimano brakes... Than my dropper seat completely failed while on long ride. I literally got of the bike and walked it back home so disappointed. This is my third Giant and love how this bike rides climbs etc.... but highly recommend spending extra money for another bike for future buyers.

I have owned this bike for a little over a year now (size XL) and logged about 1000 miles on it. I recognize a lack of efficiency (to be fair, my point of comparison is an XC hardtail), but the compliance and traction have helped me tremendously on more technical climbs. An oval chainring made a big difference here too, causing me to match and even beat my climbing time with that of the XC hardtail on rougher climbs. I do not recognize the noise issue, but maybe I got lucky. I did upgrade the drivetrain to GX after an unfortunate mishap bent the stock derailleur, and upgraded to carbon bars with a bit more rise to accommodate my height, and some carbon cranks as well as installing a lighter cassette, as this bike is a bit overweight off the shelf. Also I swapped the tyres for a Rekon / Ikon combo since I do not ride particularly rough terrain (big roots, but no sharp rocks). I used this bike in a 24 hour relay marathon and the plushy suspension helped a lot in warding off the fatigue. Concerning firming up the suspension, I am considering a volume spacer in the rear shock.

@@Lenser haven't weighed it exactly, but with the carbon parts and lighter drivetrain I've saved about 550 grams relative to the stock weight. This is not counting the tyres.

The 2 build is definitely a big improvement in all areas aside from the rear shock, but that DPS probably just needs some volume spacers. That RS 35 Gold fork is basically impossible to get dialed as is typical with motion control forks, you either get resonable mid-stroke and god awful chatter off the top, or tolerable off the top and non-existent mid-stroke.

I have a trance advanced pro 3, not the X. I would avoid the sram SX if possible. Mine came with sx and after a year I had to replace the shifter and the chain. The cassete had some issues that I fixed so it's not a huge problem but the crank and derailleur are still going strong. I would at least go with NX if you can afford it, or buy the sx knowing that you're going to have to replace stuff after a while

I just ordered a trance 29 x 1 (panther green) for a bargain sale price of £1600.... Mods: first off replace those terrible tektro 4pots for some XTR 4pots for ultimate braking performance. Next is that cheapo praxis chainset, again XTR boost cranks with an oval chainring (works), XTR rear mech, shifter & cassette. And finally a set of DT XM1700 wheels.... Want to ride it to see if a 35mm stem is better than the stock 50. Looking forward to taking it out on a spin once i finish fitting the mods!

Where I live, Manitoba, I'm finding it hard to decide between low and high on my advanced pro 1. Low setting is very low slung and makes the bike pretty poppy, but we have punch climbs and do just as much climbing as descending. This makes the high setting much more efficient. I also find the suspension very active. I normally run 30% sag in the rear, with this bike running 25% still has a lot of bobbing. Trail switch is needed.
