The first season was the best but remember that it was not just Dr. Smith that turned the show into camp comedy. The campy TV Series of Batman came out and was a huge hit. People wanted escape and fantasy to avoid dealing with WW2, Korea, Vietnam, the Communist Scare, Nuclear War, Kennedy Assassination, Hippies, etc and america was still flush with money and jobs from the Post WW2 boom as well as the govt spending on the Korean and Vietnam War. Irwin Allen had a reputation for being cheap...extremely cheap...thats why a lot of the sets were reused scraps from other shows...and Irwin used Dr Smith to rewrite the scripts....so Irwin got a free extra writer. The writers had to come up with a concept for the episode and a barebones script because they knew Dr. Smith would rewrite it. The show became a 3 person show (will, smith and the robot) making everyone else supporting cast...but as Jonathan Harris said....actors hate to be unemployed....and it was a check...and it was easy money
