Ya man! I won't say im much of a jazz drummer at all, but the key to versatility for me is just listening to a bunch of the music and immersing yourself in the genre and get the 'language' in you so when you play jazz and make your musical decision it comes from the same feeling you felt when hearing the greats do it on the records you heard!

It's a tough tune. You transcribe any of it? I'd be interested in seeing what you got. I'm about to transcribe this tune myself.
@RadioActiveBreakfast10 жыл бұрын
No I didn't transcribe it... I was just jamming over the top. I copied the one quite prominent fill with the rim clicks going into the piano solo cuz I thought it'd be too obvious that it wasn't me... :p But my TesseracT cover I did mostly transcribe apart from the fills if you're into that kind of music. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJC0k4mLnLqdi6c

A lot of practice :p but no... a lot of practice with like the push pull to get the 'skip' part of the jazz pattern down to throw that in wherever in your phrasing and also to basically think and feel it all in half time so you feel like youre floating a lil more than basically micromanaging your own playing beat by beat

Never really got how jazz rhythms work. I cannot pinpoint the rhythm exactly while for stuff like metal and rock I know exactly what they're doing even though I don't play the drums.
@RadioActiveBreakfast10 жыл бұрын
I get what you mean. I feel like jazz starts from a more 'undiscovered' territory, being swung 8th notes etc and then also often branches more using more polyrhythms that metal and rock stuff. Typically for metal and rock, it is more tasteful to stick to just 16ths and 32nd notes really and go to very obvious triplets when it gets pretty big. Jazz is more woven in and out combining different rhythmic subdivisions and there's more going on. This all generally happens while the ride tries to keep where it is, making the polyrhythm more prevalent and more confusing! But yeah, I'm sure it mostly comes down to you not being familiar or comfortable with it as much as you probably are metal or rock. Thanks for watching though!

Am I the only one who is now quite impressed? I mean the technique is great but it's not rock solid rhythm-wise. He skips the swing rhythm and instead plays straight quarter notes, but he then tries to throw some swing in there and in my opinion, it doesn't keep up with the tempo. This is understandable since Giant Steps is almost 300 BPM and I make the same mistake. Although the fills are great.
@RadioActiveBreakfast6 жыл бұрын
This video was from 2014, i was a wee little kipper compared to now. I think its awful too haha Im playing with like 2B sticks or something... if that doesnt scream jazz i dunno what does ;) Im surprised this of all my videos has the most views. Im not a jazz drummer by any means... but views are views hahaha
@jojoremeny6 жыл бұрын
Not subtle at all ,you are too heavy handed .Also you are not playing with consistent time on the ride cymbal but keep breaking up into 1/4 notes which the original does not do. .. I play this song with brushes around 3 20 BPM .. with 4 chorus solos . I must admit it's pretty difficult to keep time at that speed and for soloing ,you have to keep singing the melody in your head otherwise you will lose form. .. So respect to you for just keeping up with original

it's style preferences. Some people do that. also, no need to flex.
