Hey, i ride my T to work every day. I get some looks as my 8 legged steed passes by, but the crickets to mile economy is great. I took a video...but ...er... lost it...somewhere. I will have a look under the bed. A Sample size of one, but way way way back in the old days (95 ish) i bought Stermi spiderling, treated it no different to any other spide spiderling. I wasnt even aware of their reputation at the time. It did fine. Given this was pre internet and i just muddled my way through things and kept it at mid '80s. Fed it a LOT, it was male and lasted about 5 years. I have always had an incredible gift/curse to almost always only buy males of whatever supposedly unsexed example of whatever animal of any species of anything i buy. Great video as always.

I'm in the same boat as you with always getting males. I'm chalking it up to just more males being produced than females to guarantee enough survive to mate, but man it's depressing getting attached to the little dudes knowing you wont have as much time with them.

After discussion with some friends, I was wondering if spiders have an acidic stomach environment. As their food is liquidised by enzymes before they suck it up using their sucking stomachs, do they have the need for an acidic environment in them guts to help break down their food further to help them absorb food further. If anyone sees this comment I would be grateful for an answer or if anyone can point me in the right direction. By the way I really love this channel and appreciate the work and effort you and Billie put into it.

Thx Tom, beautiful spiders. I love the look of the phormictopus sp., they are so amazing and here in germany very underrated. I have many spiders, but not so many of the biggest specs. My Lasiodora klugi is the biggest one with 9,3 inch after the last molt and my T. stirmi with 9,2 inch. Both are old ones. Than my pamphobeteus sp. platyomma is around 9 inch. My Acanthoscurria geniculata with 8,5 is also a monster. And last but not least my pamphobeteus sp. machala with 8,3 inch. All my other spiders are smaller at the moment. My first big spider ever passed away 3 years ago, a big T. blondi female with at least 9,5 inch. The biggest spider I have seen in real was a T. stirmi at the Hamm Expo in germany, around 11 inch, it was a real monster, never saw anything bigger like that. I don't think there are real 12+ inch spiders in the hobby, 10+ is also a exeption and rar. By the way my old Grammostola pulchra is huge and my most massive spider, not a big legspan, but thick legs and a big big body with large fangs. She is like big fat truck 😁 So I had to mention her here! Wish you a great week and stay save! Greetings Chris 🤘
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hey, Chris! They were quite underrated her for a long time. However, now that they have become more popular, you have dealers selling various "new species" of Phormictopus for gobs of money. I miss the days when you could get a Dominican purple sling for $50...no $250. And those are some huge spiders...wow! I'm sorry to hear about your T. blondi female. I hope that mine get that large someday. Someone else mentioned their G. pulchra as well! I only have a mature male, and he's decent sized but not huge. I hope that you have a great weekend as well...thanks!

That said, I've kept many species of Phormictopus, and there always seems to be some variation in color from specimen to specimen. I'll be curious to hear what it looks like after its next molt!

My 1st and largest spider is my LP. Shes about 6inches at the moment. That is a guestimate. Shes heavy premolt. And I haven't had the testicular fortitude ( I too came into the hobby terrified of spiders. But thought LP would be the perfect one to get over my fear) to measure her properly.
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hi, Brandie! Well, I hope that her molt goes well. Just wait until she sheds and measure the old skin...it's much easier than trying to measure the spider. :)

The largest tarantulas I've had are the stirmi "male" and a P.rufilata "still have. Both reached around 8.5 inches but I will say my stirmi male was much much heavier built. Both impressive but I think the goliath takes the cake in overall size

I have to admit Tom, that I'm one who doesn't like drab, brown T's. But I was awestruck with that nice extended close up of your Blondi. So I get what you're saying. She is downright majestic looking. Kinda like looking at an Anaconda or large Python to a Ball Python. Also, they're not exactly brown. More like a maroon brown. And Haiitian Browns look more like a metallic cinnamon, so I never had a problem w them.

I‘ve got a huge LP female, just her body is around 8-10cm. Never had a good chance to measure her… she’s crazy and she destroyed her last molt! With time, my T. stirmi female will get bigger, can’t wait to see her grow. I love the giants, but also my smaller ones (several Brachypelma and Tliltocatl sp.). Love to see them grow from tiny slings to good sized spiders. ❤

@@TomsBigSpiders yes, she‘s a giant. Hope I‘ll get the next molt to measure her properly. She‘s 9 years old and molting has slowed down to around 1x per year. That's funny when I hear people talking about how fast the Phormictopus species grow, I don't know why but for me I found they were not that fast. I got 3 P. atrichromatus slings back in November and so far they only molted twice so I doubt they're gonna hit 4" in a year, but I did notice they put up more size than other species with each molt. They were about 1/2" when I got them and now I'd say they're maybe 1" to 1.25". My biggest one right now is my juvenile G. pulchripes, she's about 3.5" and I believe she's in pre molt so it's about to be bigger!
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Most of my Phormictopus grew quite quickly. There is one molt in particular where they seem to go from 2.5" to 4.5" in one molt. It's a massive size jump. Good luck with the G. pulchripes molt!
@stxemo Жыл бұрын
I think my biggest one is my mature male P. Regalis at 6.5 inches followed by my mature male curly hair at 6 inches. My unsexed P. Metallica is about 5.5 inches so im still praying it's a female but i suck at sexing through molts. Still remember when the regalis had his final molt and I was floored by how big he was. Was also in my first year of keeping T's so it felt gigantic. Now not so much. My smallest is my mature male H. Pulchripes at barely 3 inches!

Hi, i just watched your video and my interest in taratulas is pretty new, at least in the big ones, smaller "house spiders" are still a bit creepy. I saw some very calm tarantulas that doesnt even care being gently pushed with a soft brush, while others are instantly went into threatening pose. How about the salmon pink, since you mention its a good one for beginner?
@TomsBigSpiders7 ай бұрын
It's funny because many folks that get used to working around tarantulas find that they still remain scared of house spiders for a while. My salmon pinks were always pretty laid back.
@MADxHAWK7 ай бұрын
@TomsBigSpiders Im not really scared of them it's more Like creepy or disgusted. I thought about why I would hold a tarantula but find house spiders disgusting. I think it's the way they sit, move and look. A tarantula usually moves slowly and most of them look "fluffy" and somehow cute when they pull their legs close to their bodies. House spiders usually sit with their legs spread around them moving very fast and always look like they any moment jump into your face. They remind me of a tiny Version of the huntsman that still freaks me out. Thankfully they don't exist in my country. It's strange, I know, but it's nice to know im not the only one :) I want a B. Hamorii and a G. Pulchra. Those are my favorites. They are so calm and docile even they can be very fast when you feed them and what I've heard so far they are very good for beginners.

How do you measure the moult Tom ??? Jo xx

Soak it in warm water with a drop of dish soap, carefully spread it out on a paper towel or plate, measure from the tip of the longest front leg to the tip of opposite back leg.

I've got me a Pamphobeteus sp. mascara a year ago and she has grown from around 5 cm to 12 cm now. I think two more moults an she will be an adult. Looks very beefy already. By the way...I think the measuring of the legspan is more precise than that of the body.
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
Hey, Mike! Wow, that's great growth! As for legspan vs. body, I guess that measuring both would give you a better overall picture. That said, when folks say, "Look at the size of that spider!", they are talking about legspan, not body size. haha That measurement just means more to me!
@mikepetersen7319 Жыл бұрын
@@TomsBigSpiders Hi Tom. Well maybe One could measure the legspan and the size of the carapace without the chelicera and the abdomen. Some keepers in Germany prefer this method, but I think just to measure legspan is more practical. After all...the main thing is a healthy spider being well.

I think DLS cannot represent the entire picture, but with masses. I've never kept a giant huntsman, which is famous for its DLS while being way less bulky than tarantulas. _T. stirmi_ is said to be slightly larger than the classic Goliath, _T. blondi_ (DLS & mass) when _T. apophysis_ has the largest DLS among the three (but less robust than the former two).
@TomsBigSpiders Жыл бұрын
I think that for a "complete" look at size, you would have to take body length into consideration. That said, when someone yells, "Look at the size of that spider!" they are usually talking about legspan and not body length.

Great upload Tom it was nice to get a good look at your bigger girls . My 2 biggest girls are my sericopelma sp Darien 'The Black Daliah ' is about 7.5 inches but hasn't moulted for me yet, she was bought as an af after falling in love with the genus, (i got a santa catalina juvenile female after seeing yours n fell in love n now need them all, ) but her viv is 12x18 and she takes up just under half of the 18inch side when she stretches out so i am guestimating at 7.5 inches. My second is also a sericopelma but sp Bouquete 'Daphne ' also bought as a saf she just moulted for me last week and has easy hit 7 inches although again i haven't retrieved the moult its deep in her burrow but have seen her stretching since n shes in a 12 x12 and fills more then half the 12 inches so must be 7 inches . They aren't the biggest girls in the world but to someone who is only just been keeping for 3 years they are massive and i adore them. I do have an lp 'missy who is a mr' and blondi 'Catherine the Great ' but both are slings so not big babys yet but will get there eventually 😊 great upload as always you 2 cant wait for the next your vids always make my day 😊
