Awesome video Tom and a couple of real beauties there. That little one was so cute pushing the water dish aside so it could hide lol. Yes it’s a real shame that M design have stopped doing a lot of their containers as they are great quality and very affordable.

I have the purple and its mega reclusive. Im glad I can see it's burrow through the enclosure cuz it wouldn't have come up for food(it's about 1") I waited a few weeks after molt then excavated the old tunnel and started dropping stuff in. I haven't had great luck when it comes to Dwarf species. My juvenile citharacanthus cyaneus doesnt wish to leave it's sealed burrow either. I finally had to check on that one after 2 months so I lifted the corkbark and there it was, ticked off at me. Looked like it hadn't even molted yet so I gave it a juicy red runner and put the corkbark back. My Dolichothele rufoniger, who was the first pricey T I aquired during this 100 T mega spree to start of my career, just completely dissapeared on me. Was in a condiment cup. I suspect it died and dissolved like the LSD ET I brought up before but knowing what I know now about Dolichothele after picking up diamantinensis I'm afraid it teleported out when I lifted the condiment lid to feed while tired or something. N incei also dissapeared on me. I'm not sure if it slipped out a vent or slipped out during initial rehouse without me noticing. I have nearly 100 Ts 4 months in like I mentioned mostly all slings and those 2 are half of the 4 losses I've had so far. The initial D diamantinensis rehouse was INTENSE. Those guys are soooooooo fast even when tiny. It was the First time I experienced true teleportation where my brain could not process the movement. And I consider mine pretty good at that gaming my whole life😂 I recently picked up some expensive, rare euathlus and a davus sp Panama so my luck better change quick! And I'll end my rant (sorry) by adding that the Tanzanian chestnut is a pure joy to own I was blown away seeing it for the first time and the webbing is excellent

I've had both of these species - I got the sp. Blue as a 1/4" sling back in April this year, and it's currently about 1". Even at this size I can tell it likes to explorative, which is cute. It even has a bit of blue on its abdomen after it molts, so I'm looking forward to what it'll look like as an adult. I got the sp. Colombia as a juvenile, and I really liked how it would explore its enclosure every night, sticking its legs through all the ventilation holes and gaps. Unfortunately the lid wasn't secure - the magnets holding it shut were weak and the tape I'd placed over it lost its stickiness - so the spider escaped and I wasn't able to find it. I'm still really broken up about it; I loved how much personality the little guy had. Needless to say, I stopped using that enclosure for tarantulas...

My smallest sling was a 1/16" cyriocosmus elegans...it was shipped in a dram vial with spagnum moss and I could not find the sling...I had to get a jewelers loop to find the sling...it looked like a grain of salt on a strand of spagnum moss...1 year later the sling is 3/4"!

Two great species, and two I happen to keep (both females). I realize these are undescribed in the literature, but more than other spiders I find the nomenclature quite varied. I adopted the convention Tarantula Canada uses, so the P. sp blue I call the P. sp Columbia/blue, and the other P. sp yellow/blue. Just so people know you may see some variability in the naming of these. I find the P. sp blue to be on the skittish side, but *definitely* curious as anything. She spends 100% of her time trying to figure out how to get the lid of the enclosure off. More than any other spider I keep, she's up to something :)

So you might have done this already. When things don’t go the way I’d like them to my next move is contacting the corporate of the company. I’ve had excellent results !! If it was me I’d be calling until I got the right person say I’ll buy 30 right now. The goal of that acrylic box company is to make money. So they have discovered that item, bring it back !! It’s definitely worth a shot 😊

I got a Pseud sp. blue a couple years ago as a tiny sling. I liked it so much I recently got 10 more slings to grow up and hopefully get a male to pair with her (she's about 2" give or take now). I don't handle my tarantulas either, but have held this one many times because she just strolls right out when I open her enclosure 😅

Hi Tom! I rescued a supposed 10 yr old Rosea from our local Serpentarium and mine is like 3 times the size of yours which makes me think she is much older? I was wondering what you think.. maybe she was power fed? Also when she was surrendered by the previous owner there were LOTS of crickets in there with her which they said had been biting her. She hates crickets.. kills and walks away.. she ate when I got her on 10/26 but has refused since then (now 11/29). Should I be concerned? I know they can go very long times without eating.. Thank you for all your incredible and informative videos!

I rehouse in the bathtub ( drain closed) cus its easier to find and catch rather than in a room with endless places to hide especially with slings and also they have a harder time climbing the tub or at least mine do anyway lol
@FeralSheWolf23 сағат бұрын
Plant nerd here: when hydrating substrate, the more dehydrated it is, the more hydrophobic it is. That means if you wait too long and the sub is too dry, the water will sit on top and pool for a bit before spreading. If this is your situation just pour some, wait for it to trickle, then do it again. Don't think "oh no, it's sitting on top, the dirt's too wet" or "I'd better not put a lot in"--it means it needs more, not less, but more slowly!

Watching this 6 years after you did it and waiting for my first G. Pulchra yearling from Fear Not...my last tarantula was back in '87, likely a wild caught, from the local reptile store. So here I am, in my 50s, getting back into Ts...lol...went with the Black Lab to ease back into it, though as I watched this I was lmao at your "Black Lab" - liked, subscribed. Great job! THX.

We should probably add “semi-fossorial” to the characteristics of some T’s (we already have semi arboreal )
@TomsBigSpidersКүн бұрын
I think in the case of these guys, this is what some "terrestrials" do in the wild. And people already get mad at me when I use the term "semi-fossorial". I now say, "Terrestrial plus". Maybe "Terrestrial minus" for the ones that like to dig more? :)

The issue I have is feeding a sling after a molt. For slings under 1 inch and it’s hard to see the thangs…when do you start feeding again?
@TomsBigSpidersКүн бұрын
Just wait four days to a week to feed them after a molt. They harden up much faster when they are smaller!

Are the mesh lids on the barbarous growth enclosures safe?
@TomsBigSpidersКүн бұрын
They're "perf" or perforated aluminum, and so far they are just fine. They don't have the criss-crossed wires like the wire mesh has, so they are less likely to get their toe claws stuck.

I bought four slings from FNT and this was one of them. I also just ordered 3 more slings from Josh’s Frogs. Avic purpure, c. versicolor, p. sazimai, a. geniculata, g. pulchra, b. hamorii and the t. albo. Super excited to grow them all out 😊 I had a wild caught either texas brown or tan tarantula as a kid, and loved her. I think I want to get one of those too eventually to reminisce on her. Love your videos, have been binge watching them over the last couple weeks 😂

What kind of enclosure (dimensions in centimeters, please) would you recommend for an adult grammostola pulchripes female? The shop I got my tarantula from suggests 30x20x20 cm (length/width/height) as a sensible minimum- would you agree with that? Great video, I am new to the hobby and purchased a young golden knee female last week. I have just discovered your channel, definitely the best tarantula content on KZbin! Greetings from Poland.
@TomsBigSpidersКүн бұрын
Hello! That size would work well for a smaller adult. They honestly don't use all that much space. I have my bigger adult female in one that measures 30.5 x 46 around the base, and she doesn't use all of it. For a larger adult, something 30.5 x 30.5 would work well.
@pawekania3963Күн бұрын
@TomsBigSpiders Thank you so much for the answer and taking the time to convert the measurements into centimeters- I truly appreciate that!
