The Giant Trance X is back! Forget everything you knew about the old one though, because this bike is an entirely different beast. Featuring more travel, progressive geometry and a flip chip for tweaking the ride height, the Trance X is the most capable trail bike we've ever tested from Giant.
To see exactly what it can do, we tested both the alloy and carbon versions of the new Trance X. Check out the reviews here;

New bike day, just brought the Trance X 2. Thanks for the super informative and in-depth review on the Flow website, helped me select this bike as "the one". It only took a year for me to find one that was available (thanks covid!) Now to get out to some rocky trails (You Yangs or Harcourt) to enjoy the active suspension before we are locked down again (thanks Sydney)

Hey, I've got a newish X 2 (ridden 5x), and the Fox 36 forks have a horrendous knock in the left stanchion. Feels like a loose headset, but it isn't. When you put your finger between the stanchion and the bridge, you can feel the movement when you rock the bike, and can even see the seal deforming. Any body else seen this, and what was the remedy? Are Fox fixing these under warranty? Over here in NZ.

Thanks for the great review! What would you recommend for a wheelset upgrade on the alloy version?
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the review! For a wheelset upgrade, I've had good experience with Hunt Bike Wheels, great specs and build for a decent price. I'd also look at Stan's NoTubes complete wheels - something like the Arch or Flow wheelset would be a good shout, or even the carbon CB7 variants if you wanted to spend more. You could also look at Giant's own carbon wheels, assuming your Giant dealer can do a sweet package deal for the bike with a wheelset upgrade. We've also just received the alloy Synthesis wheelset from Crank Brothers, which appear to be very well made for the money - stay tuned to the website for the upcoming review on those! [Wil]

DT Swiss XM1501s or whatever the newest version is called would work well with this bike. 30mm internal. They are alloy wheels but super advanced, lightweight and bombproof. I have a set on my 27.5 trail bike and they only weigh 1.6kg so there's a whole kg off the weight off the alloy Trance X 2.

Thanks for this excelent rewiew. I ve a 3000 euros choice I am 171 et 62 kg. I don't know what s the best choice, trek fuel ex 8 or the trance x 29 2. What s your choice? Thanks
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate! Between those two bikes, you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with either choice. They're both terrifically capable trail bikes, with high quality suspension and good pedalling efficiency. The Trance X 29 is a touch more modern in its geometry - the head angle is slightly slacker, and the reach is a little longer. This means the wheelbase is bigger, which gives it excellent stability on the descents, particularly at speed. However, it also has a steeper seat tube angle to give it a comfortable position on the climbs. It's a really good climbing bike. In comparison, the Fuel EX is a little tighter in its geometry, and the frame design is also stiffer. This gives it a more responsive feel through twisty singletrack and in high-load applications, like smashing into a berm and popping off of jumps. It's still quite a comfortable bike though thanks to the big 2.6in wide tyres and plush suspension. Hope that helps mate! [Wil]

I am now in the market for a single bike since maintaining two is a expensive pain. This looks like a legit option. I would shop this against the YT Izzo. I would rather have two sets of wheels/tyres (one xc, one enduro) than two bikes. It's really annoying that Giant sent out the top of the range bike to reviewers as I would prefer to hear the non-live suspension review. At any rate, that bike without wireless shifting is a complete non-starter. Especially with the poor wheels. The 1 and 2 look the goods though.

Hi Wil, how do you feel the difference between this trance X and the trance 29 when you ride those 2 bikes?
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there Alex! Good question - I went into a fair bit of detail about how the Trance X compares to the Trance 29 in both reviews on our website - have a suss of those for a more in-depth comparison; Alloy Trance X: flowmountainbike.com/tests/first-ride-review-2021-giant-trance-x-29-2/ Carbon Trance X: flowmountainbike.com/tests/2021-giant-trance-x-advanced-pro-29-0-review/ There's always a load more info in our written reviews on the website, as we can't always squeeze all of that info into a video. We also don't always have time to shoot videos for every bike we review, so you'll find a tonne more content on the Flow MTB website. To answer your question here though, in my experience the Trance X is a better bike in nearly every way compared to the Trance 29. It's a more confident descender at speed, and it climbs better thanks to the steeper seat tube angle. It's less responsive in really tight and twisty berms where you're flip-flopping the bike around, and that's an area where the shorter and sharper Trance 29 still has an advantage. But that's about it really. Hope that helps! [Wil]

I like the look of the Trance X but the guy in the Giant shop told me no more Alloy Trance 1's for Australia. Big disappointment as I was looking to swap out of my current bike to one of these. How does it compear to the pivot switchblade ??
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
Good question Ben! Both are pretty similar bikes, though the Switchblade has a touch more travel on the rear (142mm vs 135mm) and it also gets a bigger 160mm fork. They're both good pedallers, though the Switchblade has the edge there. Even without Live Valve or a lockout on the rear shock, the Switchblade is very calm and steady under pedalling, and it sits a little higher off the ground, giving it better ground clearance for pedalling over techy stuff. In terms of the chassis, the engineering on the Switchblade is sublime, and the smaller linkages that to me feel more stout with greater lateral stiffness compared to the longer links used on the Trance X. I believe this helps with the suspension to track more smoothly, as there's less twisting through the rear end, and it gives the Switchblade a more direct feeling when pushing in through the corners. I found the Switchblade to be such a versatile and easy bike to ride. You do pay for it though - at least in Australia, the Switchblade is a significantly pricier bike than the equivalent Trance X, and of course Pivot doesn't offer it in an alloy version either. Hope that helps mate! [Wil]

How does it compare to the trek fuel ? , looks more aggressive
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
It's more aggressive for sure Cam, thanks to the Trance X having a longer wheelbase and slacker head angle. I also found it climbs better, due to a significantly steeper seat tube angle. The Fuel EX has a stiffer chassis though, and the back end feels more direct due to the stout chainstays and single-pivot suspension design. It gives it a slightly more agile and responsive feel. Trek's RE:aktiv shock design also works really well on the Fuel EX, gives it a very sensitive feel while still having a pert pedalling platform. While I think Giant is going more aggressive with its geometry, both bikes have pluses and minuses, and they're both excellent technical trail bikes. [Wil]

@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
@@camwells9726 - For sure. I think the Trance X will likely bring over some Reign 29 riders, particularly in Australia where we don't have a lot of big alpine terrain that warrants the extra travel. And I reckon for a lot of Aussie enduro racecourses, the Trance X will end up suiting a lot of riders pretty well. [Wil]

All the videos and reviews, and comparisons, are in the west and or at ski resorts. I live in the Northern Virginia area. I need a bike for the true tight single track and switch backs, along with the multiple types of terrain and soil we have in this region. I do not I do not want a bike that is a pedal and Crankset DESTROYER!!!! I like a bike that does not dictate to me all the many places it will not allow pedaling! A bike that performs well at: sprints, Climbs, descents, flat areas, roots, ruts, really rocky, loose soil, loose on hard, mud, sand, loam... Our Appalachian mountains are older and not as peaked as the Rockies, or as tall. NOT DOING GAP JUMPS AND BIKE PARKS. Any of you able to ride and compare the other 12x-14x travel, brands/bikes to INTENSE, GIANT TRANCE X pro, PIVOT 429, or maybe too much bike for here the SWITCHBLADE? Is it true that the NEW redesigned SWITCHBLADE is such a better pedaling and handling magician that it is as good or better than a smaller travel bike like the 429 or Scott whatever model, etc.? Are most of the bikes to long and slack to ride the tighter switchbacks? Looking for a great all around MIDATLANTIC, totally different environment of riding. Will the new Geometry of the LOW, long and slack, be harder on the knees since I assume the knee will be more in front of the pedal spindle vs traditional? Is the Intense geometry a little behind, in reality? Is this good or bad for a pedal everywhere bike? Not just descending! How about the LIVE VALVE, is it just a way to Separate A fool from his money? Or does it truly make it like owning two or three different bikes? Does it make it a cross country bike and a trail bike and a enduro bike? Does it add in a lot of problems in cost and time and maintenance? Or does it just make the bike a lot better? How good is the basic peddling platform and suspension on the Trance X? Without the Live Wire magic, is it as good or better than a DW link? What are the differences in sprinting, climbing, ascending tech/rocky and loose or roots, and tight switchbacks? Descending same? WOW what horrible wheels the Trance X pro comes with! Do you have to pedal a quarter of the way around before the hub engages? What are the specs on rim internal and ext.? Spokes? Nipples? Is the hub upgradable? carbon quality? Do they crack easy? Will a 2.6 fit well in the back? What is the quality of the frame carbon? I do not want to get beat up or jack hammered, but I don’t want a wet noodle. I am 6 foot 1 inch tall and 165 pounds naked. A bike and manufacture I can count on In the backcountry, and to have to have quality support post sale!!!! Thank you, and good riding to you all!

Everything functions properly kzbin.infoUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Nothing was damaged in the box aside from a decal on the fork. The decal was missing a piece of a corner but I ended up peeling them off anyways. Assembly is easy BUT make sure you tune up the derailleurs. Both the front and rear need adjusting. I'd advise going to a bike shop but I opted out and put in 10+ hours with the help of KZbin. Ended up fraying a shifter cable but all in all I learned from the experience. The Brakes work well but the front caliper needs adjusting or at least mine did because the rotor was rubbing against the pads. Make sure you swap out the seat, grips, and pedals. For the short run you'll be fine though. I've read that this bike isn't built yet for hard trails but I just need it for the city. PA has some of the worst roads and being in a mountain this was a great choice. Worth the investment!

Flip chips are pointless. Only a marketing technique. Once a rider knows what he/she wants there's no need for the chip. No one ever messes with the chip and people usually keep the geometry in the slack position.
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube
@FlowMountainBikeYouTube 3 жыл бұрын
I'd disagree - having spent a load of time on both the alloy and carbon Trance X test bikes, it's actually a really useful adjustment. Changing geometry makes quite a difference to the bike's fit and handling, and it's a really useful tuning tool for different trails and environments - especially because it's so easy to do on the trail. There are geometry adjustments used on other bikes that are much more subtle though, and others are more difficult to use. And in those cases I'd agree with you - most riders will probably leave the bike in the stock setting and may not ever experiment with the alternative. Which is a shame, because it's a great way to fine-tune the handling to suit your riding style and terrain. [Wil]

@@FlowMountainBikeKZbin I know this: since I bought a bike with no flip chip all my time spent with the bike is spent riding and not fiddling around and trying different adjustments. Beautiful bike, and undoubtedly a great trail bike as trance has always been. HOWEVER - 24 engagement points on a carbon wheelset is unacceptable, and also - why is this stupid industry shoving the 35mm cockpit down our throats when half the tests and riders claim it's too stiff and uncomfortable? Why does this sport insist on upgrades that make no sense?

@@finkelmann Couldn't agree more. I bought the Alloy Trance 29er 1 in 2019 and it came with GX and carbon wheels. Great bike and spec. I like the look of the Trance X but the guy in the Giant shop told me no more Alloy Trance 1's for Australia. Big disappointment as I was looking to swap out of my current bike to one of these. I am thinking of buying the base model Trance X 3 and swapping everything off the old bike onto the new.

@@David-rb3tk I reviewed the older 27.5 Trance Advanced and had noted the same drawback with the hub engagement in my review. Moreover, those hubs were not ratchet based, but rather pawl hubs, so upgrading the engagement is far from straightforward. The rim felt great, but the hub felt real cheap for the bike's spec. Obviously (and not very surprisingly) Giant didn't listen to my review :) But if more and more reviews like this one mention this problem, Giant will take notice eventually. Unfortunately, very few reviews do more than scratch the surface, let alone allow themselves to actually be critical.

@@finkelmann Yes, my hubs are rebadged DT Swiss 370's with 3 pawls. It's my third Giant bike. Might be time to look elsewhere even though I like the Trance X.

@@zyoungson215 yeh i miss the days when they bought out all the models in the range. Like back in 2010 where you could get either the trance x1,23 or 4. I got a trance x1 back in 2010 which came with full xt groupset with rear xtr derailler for $4000

@@zyoungson215 Yeah it an interesting one. Mondraker have just launched their new Downhill bike in Aluminum as their sponsored riders said it rode better than carbon. Reading an interview with a pro EWS racer recently who refuses to ride carbon bars as he has seen too many snap. Commencal, Banshee to name a couple of brands refuse to build bikes out of carbon. They firmly believe metal is the best and strongest meterial to make bikes out of. I agree with them

Carbon can last many years and have a lot of trouble free use. My younger brother has done nearly 16,000 miles of 30% road, 70% moderate trails with his Trance advanced. He gets through a lot of components, but the carbon frame has never given the slightest problem. He tells me he will keep it a couple more years until it gets to 25k 🚴🚵
