EPISODE 02 - Giant Tuna Mega Battle -
On this episode of @BlueWaterBrothers the boys were skeptical about the current Super-moon that was overhead.
We stuck to our game-plan. Catch livebaits and target Big Spring Kingfish. However, we had no idea that what was about to unfold was going to put both the anglers and the gear through the ultimate test.
The day started off slow with almost no bait around. We headed slightly deeper to where we found big schools of Blue Koheru bubbling on the surface. 10 minutes into the first drift and Dazz was bit. The bite was strange and the fish began to swim at the boat before coming tight and emptying a large amount of braid on the first run.
At first we thought we had hooked a giant Kingfish until the fish started towing us out to sea... at this stage thinking Shark!? We even considered busting it off just so we could continue with our day but the lads persevered and shortly later got a good look at what was easily a couple hundred kilo Bluefin Tuna.
Over the next three hours we got the fish within 10 metres of the boat twice but, without any proper Game-fishing equipment we were clueless as how we would actually land this beast.
Five and a half hours later, after destroying both anglers and the gear the Tuna finally found a weakness and busted us off. We were gutted when the line snapped but also slightly relieved as we don't know how much longer we could have physically held onto this fish.
We finished the day off on a high note. Landing one solid Kingfish on a livebait before releasing it and heading home to rest our bodies.
We appreciate any feedback and would love to hear what you guys think of our once in a lifetime experience.

Would a pe4-6 rod be good enough for new zealand kingfish?? My heavier one is pe10 which is too heavy that I use for tuna.
@BlueWaterBrothers
@BlueWaterBrothers 6 ай бұрын
What’s up bro. 4-6 would suit inshore/ harbour kingfish here in NZ. We use pe8-10 on our offshore fish and even then sometimes get owned. Don’t be shy to go heavy when targeting big Kingfish. They will expose you if given the chance. Cheers for the comment

I have to ask this question because every time I ask nobody can answer me or I get that same old bs answer I’ve been doing it like this my whole life. Why do Australians fish with their dominant/strong hand on the reel. Every single time the fish takes a hard run you have to switch hands to control the fish. Why not just keep the rod in your right hand and reel lefty. Just because you’ve been doing something a long time doesn’t mean there isn’t an easier way of doing it. I guarantee if you switched the reel to the left side you would control the fish a lot easier. It might feel weird for a day or 2 but you’ll get used to it fast and afterwards you’ll have a way easier time. People here in the states do the same thing with conventional reels which I can understand years back but nowadays they make so many good left handed options.

you are right in what you say but on a fish this size I don't think it would of really matted well actually it wouldn't haha. we had a knife in a gun fight in this scenario cheers for the comment

@@BlueWaterBrothers on a fish like that no your most likely right. If you didn’t brake the fish off it would have most likely died and if it was 500-600 pounds you guys would never have gotten to the the surface. 10 years ago I got Alutecnos 30 left handed right before we went on a 36h tuna trip. I’ve been fishing with the same guys for over 20 years and we allied used to use Penn International. That trip we happen to have the trip of a lifetime and ran into bluefin and bigeye. The smallest fish was probably 100 pounds with some fish being over 300. Since we’re only allowed to keep 1 bluefin over 73inch we can’t be sure what the biggest one was because I happen to catch the first oversized fish that was 227lbs 75inch. I fought that fish for probably 30-40m tops while everyone else was struggling with bigeye in the 100lbs range for hours. We caught so many fish that trip my arms were like jelly so I let my boy use my set up. He instantly saw why I was reeling my fish in way faster then everyone else and bought the same exact reel soon as we got home. Sorry for such a long comment but I had to add context. My uncle is 81 and the reason I started fishing in the first place and he even changed up after seeming the difference. When you have you dominate hand on the rod it is so much easier to fight big fish and I guarantee you will lose less fish in the process. If you fight the fish for less time then you have less of a chance of it pulling the hook. You know the hole getting bigger the longer you fight the fish and that’s how the hook usually pulls or they straighten out over time.

@@marcuslarwa9098 Why do Canadians like you display their lack of knowledge by assuming people in New Zealand are Australians? The boys seem to be doing pretty well fishing for their target species the 'wrong' way...I guarantee anyone who accidentally hooked a massive tuna on that gear would be eventually switching arms whatever arm they had on the rod. When they hook kingfish, they cope very well using their 'wrong' arm.
@marcuslarwa9098
@marcuslarwa9098 8 ай бұрын
@@thor_6886 yum sorry if I made the mistake of assume the person that has an accent that sound Australian is from New Zealand. I guess I should study the small differences in accents before I comment. That being said where did I say it was the “wrong” way. I simply gave my opinion that using your dominant arm on the rod is a lot easier. If you disagree that fine but I never said it was the “wrong” way. Oh and by the way I’m American so maybe you should use a little more of that supreme knowledge you seem to have a read before getting in your feelings.
@thor_6886

@@marcuslarwa9098 Of course you're American - I got that from your reference to being "in the states" but thanks for (pun intended) rising to the deliberate bait. Your first sentence doesn't even make sense, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you meant to apologise for assuming that someone who - to your ear - sounded Australian was from Australia. Whereas they are Kiwis. But either way, I was not-so-subtly making the point that mistakenly calling these New Zealanders "Aussies" (when we are both proud nations separated by a huge sea) is about as welcome as a Canadian being called an American or vice versa. And thanks for saying it''s fine for me to disagree with your main point - and it's not the "bs" reason you get from others who reply to your posts. In my opinion, for lure fishing for moderate sized fish in particular. people who are very dominantly right handed usually lack the coordination and reaction time to work the reel optimally with their left hand. And fish up to moderate size don't require huge arm power, so their weaker arm is perfectly adequate. But I bow to your experience with tuna and wish you all the best.

@BlueWaterBrothers i have a avet lx raptor 2speed on a uc terminator 65lb setup and a 80lb super seeker 1x3 shimano talica setup that's what I'd use in less than 50 meters . I have a 50 lb seeker I use to throw irons and a 30 lb calstar for open water. I'm not trying to be rude or ruin your fun we've all lost fish and know how much it hurts.

@@seanhartnett9753 US west coasters are the only people I know that thinks conventional reels are better than spinning gear for this (or any other) type of fishing. I bet you are a west coaster hahahaha Spinning rules.
@thor_6886
@thor_6886 8 ай бұрын
The point is these guys are targeting yellowtail kingfish in NZ, not tuna. As you'll see, they switch between top water and live baiting in the same spots, and spin gear is more optimal for that than overhead reels. If they were 'big game' fishing for tuna etc they'd be using more targeted gear, I'm sure.
