The revealing moment is when jett has to Hav slug of whiskey cuz he's nervous around bosses wife. Character revealing. Love How he slips in 'Maryland and places' u cant help but like jett even though he's racist. Great acting- brilliant.

I always saw Jett as being rascist as him not wanting to be considered any less than what he is by his fellow Texans. It doesn't come from hate for others or difference. It comes from self-hate, loathing, etc... Still unexcusable but more human none the less.

One of Deans best scenes, IMHO. What do ya'll think made JD sooo amazing? I love how he seems to draw out all of his lines and add so many different feelings to everything and even seems to do so much "communicating' even when its not his turn to talk, I guess thats why so many actors found him intimidating as he steals so many scenes that he may not necessarily written to do at times.

He did not memorize lines... he studied lines within the context of a scene and tried to naturally interact with the other player. That allowed him to improvise and add or delete words from a script and he would even sometimes stutter a line. That was how he was able to come off as Real in the personality he was playing. This approach bothered some traditional actors who believed in wrote repetition of lines. Brando took this to the ultimate extreme by refusing to study or learn lines causing directors fits and having to have his lines pasted on objects that were off camera and sometimes on cue cards held close to the chest of the player he was interacting with. It worked and the audience always got a better feeling for the character that Brando played. In The Godfather all the audience saw was Vito Corleone and not Brando playing Vito Corleone..( it was him but at the same time it was not him) . He became a different person. Dean was similar in that same way. This contrasted with John Wayne who played different characters in movies but the Audience always knew it was John Wayne playing Davey Crockett and the hero character was just a carboard cut out. Wayne could pull it off but it was not the best approach for other actors.

One of the most important scenes in this fantastic film, one of my absolute favorite movies since I was well, 7-year old? My wife's nickname is Leslie. Miss Taylor (or probably it was Leslie) was my first love. Still she is, only Miss Audrey Hepburn competes with her.

Mauricio Exenberger You're right, normally, but ET's character was a fiercely independent(modern/ahead of the times) woman. So this scene is entirely in character for them both; quite believable. Truly the entire story & movie was ahead of it's time.

My understanding is that the lone shots of Taylor here were filmed after Dean's death, and she never forgave the director Stevens for making her shoot them as if she was talking to Dean while she was still shocked and deeply saddened by his passing.
@tanyanium

If I'm not mistaken, the actions were finished during his lifetime. I can't proof it but I heard that he had been banned from driving a car (namely Porche since it was dangerous) until filming was completed. Also I heard that he passed away in only one week after the completion of filming.

@@tanyanium ...yes, my understanding is that he was banned from racing during his shooting schedule, filmed all his scenes, died three days after filming the last scene (where he's totally drunk), but when Stevens wanted Taylor's shots here re-done, he had her do it pretending Jett was there.

@@WelshKnight1066 An interesting thng about hm dying only three days after filming the drunk scene is that his hairline had been shaved back to prematurely age him and his hairline hadn`t grown back yet at the time of his death,so he would have died and been buried looking like an elder man who had already lived a good long life.

People can say what they want of course, but I sure don't care if he was gay or bi. He was on his way and yes, he did have unbelievable sex appeal, to all. I love this scene and he had a way of stealing so many scenes, this being one of them. I just read that at the end of the movie when he was drunk and mumbles, falling onto the table, that they had to have his friend, Nick Adams, redo some of the wording due to not being able to understand what he was saying. James Dean was already gone and it's still hard for me to believe, every time I watch him. R.I.P. James Dean
