When Bakalar said silent hill 2 is just a horror game with a sparse story thats just a tiny bit depressing at the end I didn't know what to say lmao SH2 is THE most depressing, sad, tragic game ever made. The level of personal turmoil and woven in thematic elements from the story into gameplay is legendary and has been discussed to absolute absurd levels ever since it was released. No other game has had the amount of reflection and deep diving that SH2 has over 25 years. The fact that SH2 lost is insane...

I love SH2. I think it's a landmark game where themes in games shifted forever, for the better, and for a while there were no games as mature and thematically compelling as SH2, probably for over a decade. Which is why it was discussed and analyzed so often for such a long time, because there were no games as thematically cohesive as SH2. But now, games have caught up, Disco Elysium, Citizen Sleeper, 1000*resist, Indika, etc indie games. I still think SH2 still has a special magic, but might just be old head rose-coloredness. But, if someone were playing SH2 for the first time now, with the re-make. I would understand how it probably wouldn't be earth-shattering. The game has a great legacy and is very important to game history, but for the better, games have come that are equally if not surpass SH2 in a lot of ways. But, like I said, I still think there's still a lot to learn from SH2, in terms of atmosphere in games.

@ThePortjumper I would argue it still has the best integration of subconscious ideas from a narrative into the game design and look. From the monsters, the town, the other characters and the puzzles, all of it was crafted based on the psyche of James and the other characters. Everything feels perfectly balanced, and it all culminates into an ending that is absolutely gut wrenching. Not saying there aren't aged mechanics and even some gamey cliche story telling like some of the "bosses" or just the clunky inventory etc, but from a story perspective, it's maybe the greatest piece of narrative "ART" ever created within gaming. Not that it's everyone's cup of tea or even a story everyone will resonate with, but it's absolutely one of the best pieces of artistic narrative expression within the medium. I still think it mostly lost because multiple people didn't play it and didn't want to and just chose persona.. Which to me is perhaps abetter "game" but a much less impactful personal story. And since I fall to the side of narrative being the most important I tend to want those games to win. P.S. I'll agree that Disco Elysium is probably the best written game ever and is right up there with SH2 in narrative to me.

they can pull off a profesional preshow livestream for the TGA, but make them do a Secret Santa and the whole operation falls apart at the seams.

Having a caption of "now discussing: game" and a preview list of each category on screen would have improved the viewing of this.

I am gonna have to be that guy- This format is bad. 9 people yelling over each other about random pseudo-related gaming nonsense with questionable mic audio and topics that make little sense. I'm old enough to remember everyone at a table being quiet and listening while Ben Pack read about Disco Elysium from his notes while breaking down in tears. This is like watching people at a party with no alcohol yell about things they like. Far cry from the Gerstmann/Shoemaker/Pack/Vinny days. Maybe this is what "hits" with the kids today. No thank you.

Weird. I remember Gerstmann getting upset when his nom didn't get top spot and yelling "Fuck Inside!" and "Fuck Outer Wilds!" and basically arguing everyone down until they were so exhausted he got his way. I prefer the new chill experience.

For folks having issues with the audio, this is a great time to check out Minnmax's The Two Tens (part 1 just went up earlier today). It's likely everything you were hoping to find from older GB-style GOTY discussions and the format/audio is great.

Man it is too bad Indy came out so late, cause that moment that Grubb mentioned truly is so good. So well written, shot and directed. Also the ending is a contender too. FFVII Rebirth is completely off my top 10 and I am a FF fan.

Not a too many person issue. Sounds like they didn't get a chance to edit the audio to eliminate cross talk or their mics might not have been recorded in discrete audio tracks. Possibly both since they've been shorthanded from all the layoffs the past few years.
