UPPER SAVAGE RIVER - CHASING BROOKS AND RAINBOWS

We took our annual family trip up to Western Maryland to stay at the Savage River Lodge. In between other activities I was able to get out on the upper Savage River a few times to try my luck. 3 different locations are showcased here at various locations on the upper stretch. All wild brook trout were found on the upper-most stretch, while a mix of wild brook trout and stocked rainbow trout were found further down. I changed tactics a bit and did not euro nymph at all. I chose to try more traditional techniques with dry-dropper rigs and streamers.
Equipment used:
Hardy Zenith 4 wt 8' rod with Ultralight DD reel.
Line - Orvis Hydros with Maxima leader.
Flies - Dry dropper - caddis with frenchie. Streamer - olive jiggy squirrel.

Nice trip. Good to see how you did at the same time I was up there. Flows and conditions were PERFECT. Sadly starting to get dry and warm. Tight lines Jon!

Thanks Mike! I know, summer mode is starting to creep in, unfortunately. Soon it will be only tailwater/spring-fed trout fishing for me. And smallmouth! Hope all is well!

I’m not totally sure if it’s private at the river location. Might be part of state forest right there as there is parking lot with sign.
