I can't believe I didn't spot it sooner. But when I began really looking at it, it was so obvious. Lesson. Look very closely at the guitars you buy used. Don't meet up in public ever. Only ever make deals when you can plug it in and try it. Never ever ever, I repeat EVER, meet up in public to buy a guitar. Ever. It's the best way to get scammed.

No disrespect, but what is this..the 3rd time your buddy Rich has been scammed? Scamcaster? Broken-neck Les Paul? I feel bad for the guy, but you HAVE to be diligent when inspecting used guitars. You should be by his side from now on when he's looking at used guitars. Ouch.

Yes, but he's been through dozens and dozens and dozens of guitars. I'd have probably been taken myself having looked at this guitar. It was playing passably well enough to pass a quick trade inspection. I played it for over an hour before any of these repairs, and my only concern at that point was the bridge kissing the body. I was more worried it had run out of room for adjustment than anything. This was one of those things, that I had to work my way backward through. I'm certain 7/10 people would have walked away with this guitar in trade and been none the wise of it's condition.

Indeed. I once checked out an acoustic guitar, there was a crack in the back of the neck joint, only visible from certain angle in the light. I could tell the seller was inexperienced and unaware. Already asked and confirmed he wasn't the first owner of the guitar. Didn't want to embarrass him so sort of let him down gently.. "Ah..I think I'll leave it actually" and tilted the guitar in his direction so he would clock the split. Thanked him but no more words were spoken really. Glanced back as I was walking off and he was inspecting the neck closely, by the time I was home he'd updated his ad to reflect the damage.

The slot hasn’t been deepened. That’s how Gibson nut slots are. They usually don’t look like that, because the finish is sprayed over the nut.

For a guy who fixes guitars, you sure get your knickers in a twist when you come across a guitar that needs repairs. And the first thing you should check on a Gibson is for a head stock repair. The fact that it took you weeks to find the problem with the nut and headstock doesn't play well in your favour as a Luthier. You won't be working on any guitars I own.

Hey everyone.. Just read through the initial comments. Just a couple things instead of saying the same thing several times. In Richard's defence, he trades and buys and sells a heap ton. He's not "RICH" in any sense of the word. He had just gotten to a point where he has had enough gear to keep a revolving door of trades going. You win some, you loose some. This time he got burned. Also in his defence, I'd probably have overlooked that break myself. I'd be down the road 2 weeks in the same place if I'd gotten it myself. Like I said, it did play passable when he got it. The clues came slowly to me as I began to check measurements, and only then did I finally find it myself. I'd have gotten taken on this for sure!! You might too, which is why I post this for your sake. What to look out for. Learn from US:-)

Over There - the first thing to look for in a Gibson is the headstock break, and the daoed nut slot was a dead giveaway that it was not a simple nut replacement. The refinish flaws were also apparent. The lowered bridge is a dead giveaway that the headstock should be checked. Mahogany is a diffuse porous wood, and there is a short grain problem right at the truss rod cover. I suspected it as soon as I saw the lowered bridge, which was a Nashville style, and it should never be that low, as the strings would be right on the frets. As soon as I saw the dadoed nut, it was an obvious hack job, done by somebody who didn't have nut files.

One of the first things I check on a Gibson is for a broken neck. This would be fairly common on mahogany neck Gibson. A broken neck would be priced about half the price of a non-broken neck Gibson. The neck relief is the second thing I look for. You should be able to check it without a straightedge or a gauge set. A neck relief set and bridge adjustment is one of the easiest and most basic setup for a guitar tech.

The nut slot, from what I can catch on the vid, looks like a normal Gibson install. The scraping of the binding to expose the binding does not scrape to the depth of the nut slot. However, you are correct that the nut was replaced. Gibson on newer guitars also epoxy the corian nut... not desirable for changing nuts. Looks like the neck tilt is installed a little "off".

Hey, I just want to say a few things. First I let this repair be filmed because if it can help someone else then that's great. Second, I've likely traded over 120 guitars last year and a half. 2 bad apples isn't too bad... Biggest issue here is that I was too eager (I really wanted another Midtown or ES style guitar) and met the guy in a garage where the lighting wasn't so good. My mistake. He is of course a total douche who won't return an email response. That's life, live and learn. No I'm not a wealthy guy. I've got three kids, two of them in diapers. There was a time when I had 8-9 guitars and three in rotation on trades all the time but right now I've got no time for that. Honestly, today I only own 2 electrics (the ml3, this one) and one Martin acoustic (gift from my wife) I'll never trade. I enjoyed the run while it lasted... It's been fun doing all those videos with Nelson and trying new stuff. Every now and then BS like this eventually happens. I may keep it... She still rocks hard and I might fix it up more and make it my own. Or I'll sell / trade it with a disclaimer. Not sure yet. 😈 Part of me wants to post the guy name, email and phone number of the guy who ripped me off but that would be bad karma and I know someone might break his legs... So it's best to let it go I think. If he won't trade back, that's how she goes... It's his dishonour. Best I can do is try to help someone out and pass on the experience. I hope he never crosses my path again. Ha! 😁😡😉

Post the guys name and if you see a post from him in the future if possible post something on it or if it's Craig's list post a add calling him out. Something like "Hey the guy selling red Strat sold me blank and this was the results." I know when you want something you get stoked and it's easy to over look things. Everyone go's threw it at one time or another.That's why sometimes it's good to take a buddy because He's not looking at it threw excited eyes. Ya know? You could always have the guy trading meet you at a guitar repair shop and give the guy working there a few bucks to look it over like a mechanic would with a car. If the guy dosen't want to maybe he is trying to be shady and it's best to shy away from him. Good luck in future trades.

Yep, own a high-end, limited edition Les Paul and it fell forward off a guitar stand, landed on the head stock and "SNAP!" I took it to a luthier who repaired it so well it's nearly undetectable and it plays like new, but it will no longer be the collector's guitar I had invested over 3k, but I've been playing 40 years and it's the first time this ever happened. I was told the neck break took half the value off the guitar, even though it's nearly impossible to detect. The experience still left me bummed. I wish Gibson would volute their necks or do something, but it is what it is. Still, a broken and "properly repaired" Gibson head stock is still a fine player guitar.

The nut may be too low, but you do realize that Gibson sets their nuts in below the binding and then put finish over it to make it look like it’s the same depth as the binding but in reality the bottom of the nut is well below the binding. The depth in the video looks pretty standard for Gibson. Just some information, do with it what you please.

@montys8th
@montys8th 7 жыл бұрын
ChordKC reversing the neck pickup is the "Peter Greene" mod. It makes the pickups out of phase and gives that classic sound Peter Greene got when his tech accidentally reinstalled the pickup in the wrong way in his 1959 Les Paul after working on it. Peter Greene became famous with that sound in early Fleetwood Mac. He then gave the guitar to Gary Moore who famously used it in Thin Lizzy and his solo career up until his death. It is now owned by Kirk Hammett of Metallica who paid $2million for it due to its provenance. All because a tech having a bad day put a pickup in the wrong way. The pickup is still installed backwards too.

I noticed it right away and caught the neck scar before he did in the video. (What the fuck is his name?)I wondered if maybe when the previous owner was messin with the P/U's he dropped the guitar. I wonder if he pulled the P/U covers off if he'd get a surprise. I've seen it happen.

Wes Montgomery did it before Peter Greene. It effects the tone. Depending on the wiring of the bridge pick up, you can get phasing.

I always enjoy guitar repair videos, and I especially appreciate that you pointed out the evidence of modifications/repairs to this guitar. One constructive suggestion - the video would have been better with a little less swearing and a little more explanation of your decisions (and changes to those decisions) about how to approach the repairs/upgrade and/or what would have convinced you to go forward with your original plans. I lost the thread of your decision making when you decided to reinstall the original nut. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

That's what the guitar looks like when you replace the nut. The nut looks smaller because there's paint over the binding and nut. If that's a Nashville tune o matic, I think that might be the problem. ABR-1 maybe?

You made it sound like the end of the world. I own a Midtown. When I saw the setup I thought, straighten the neck raise the bridge. Ok the nut slot was too deep and there was a repair made to the neck that was questionable, It needed a shim, not something to freak out over. It was a bad trade, lesson learned. The repair was not that hard. A shim. No, The guitar is not worth what he thought but it's a player, that's what we buy them for. At least it's not a Chibson.

Why is it that your always getting fake guitars? And another thing: that video of that white Strat you said was fake and you said the clue you missed was the serial number, well that was a real fender neck. Check the serial number on their site. But since you turned off the comments section on that vid no one could tell you otherwise.

The setup issue with that guitar has nothing to do with the broken headstock. That looks like a fine headstock repair. Still should have been disclosed, but it's not as big of an issue as you are making it out to be. I'm not sure why your friend would trade a Deluxe Tele plus "other shit" for a Midtown anyway, though. It's a fine guitar but not an expensive model at all.

Yep, the previous guy could have just pin knocked the original nut that was epoxied in the slot, the result is easily a neck break.

Why not just string it up and play it? So what if it has had the neck repaired from a break? Lots of Gibsons go through that right of passage.

No. The issue is the shitty Gibson headstock design.
@TheSwedishUploader
@TheSwedishUploader 7 жыл бұрын
Richlite doesn't bite back to break the guitar. It's just a material. It was not a Gibson experiment either - had still been in development it would not have been constructed with it for retail. Goes against all business logic. Other manufacturers have used it before, and successfully so. As for Richlite bowing the neck in this video - impossible. Richlite doesn't warp. It's more durable, non-warping and more reliable. That's one major benefit of it being man-made. That's also why it's more expensive than ebony as well. I of course don't mean to ridicule your claim. I just want to clarify that it's not untampered black magic we're dealing with here - it's a man-made, organic material very similar to ebony. Like bluesboynate said, it's the Gibson headstock design that's the cause of neck breakage.
