v1:
you wanna love me right now
you wanna get alone with me
you wanna get my clothes off
and hurt me
you came alone to me
from however far away
asking me to know how i know
you’re all the same
pre-chorus:
black leather and dark glasses
pouring another while i shake my ass
he’s cold blooded so it takes more time to bleed
obsession with the money
addicted to the drugs
says he’s in love with my body, that’s why he’s fucking it up
and then he says to me
chorus:
baby, if it feels good
then it can’t be bad
where i can be immoral
in a stranger’s lap
and if you wanted good
downright iconic
something they all want
that only you can have
v2:
you wanna fuck me right now
you wanna see me on my knees
you wanna rip these clothes off
and hurt me
pre-chorus:
and if you hate me
please don’t tell me
just let the lights bleed
all over me
chorus:
if it feels good
then it can’t be bad
where i can be immoral
in a stranger’s lap
and if you want it good
downright iconic
then i would show you something
you can never have
chorus:
if it feels good
then it can’t be bad
where i can be immoral
in a stranger’s lap
and if you want it good
downright iconic
then i would show you something
you can never have
outtro:
you wanna love me right now
you wanna love me right now
you wanna fuck me right now
you wanna…
you wanna love me right now
you wanna love me right now
you wanna fuck me, fuck me
you wanna love me, love me, you wanna

I feel like the line "if it feels good it can't be bad" is also alluding to the fact that some people (incorrectly) believe that if a person experiences physical pleasure during r@pe or SA then it isn't assault.

Yeah... that's exactly what it means. It's really a horrible way to manipulate a situation of SA to say that if it even felt a little good that it was okay... yuck.
@SulsaNim
@SulsaNim 6 ай бұрын
A possibility... but there is also no line in her verse that says she's unwilling... tempted by a new lover she's unsure of maybe..but I don't get SA or dark vibes from this. The part that gets me is the mixed messages I feel are going on internally (and personally) that she's feeling, which makes me question her confidence with setting boundaries or her comfort level with a new lover and herself. Alot that can be interpreted for sure

Same. I'm a cis woman but because of my trauma I draw in guys who can sweet talk me and get whatever they want from me, then act like I've never existed. I also did sex work for a time and I am way too comfortable with being fetishized. Her music speaks to a part of me that I can't seem to heal. 💔
@baileymoran8585
@baileymoran8585 7 ай бұрын
It’s relatable on both levels, to a degree. My situation was forced online SW, and I’m grateful I got out before it became in person. I can relate to the detached attempt at trying to convince yourself you enjoy it, and finding it freeing. But I can also relate to when I was younger and just wanted to have fun.

This song is so incredibly important bc it tells the story of a trans woman who finally gives in. Ethel pens her willingness to lose herself in sex despite her partner’s shame & fetishization of her body due to her identity as a trans woman. It's sexy and catchy but ultimately extremely dark due to the high statistic of trans women being murdered. We're often used for our bodies and then rejected with no warning and sometimes killed when a man's masculinity is threatened. I've never heard anything like this before. Sex songs are typically bright pop tracks, so this blew my mind. I actually studied it for a music class and wrote an analysis on it lol.

Thank you for writing this. I have been through something similar, a long time ago now, and I have not heard a song address this subject. I am not trying to be dismissive of other issues, but emotionally darker music for women is usually limited to self esteem issues, dating emotionally distant men who might cheat, and feeling guilty over starting arguments. I relate to some of that, as well, but it’s not why I’m still on my healing journey after 8 years. I am functional. I have more of a life that I thought possible when I first started healing. I think if I heard this a year earlier it would have still been too much for me, but right now, this and some of the other less discussed traumatic themes you write about, are very cathartic. It is hard to discuss any pain or trauma but when it’s shit that people see as just in movies and dateline specials, it makes it that much harder. So I use music for catharsis, and I am grateful for this song.

i just remembered my ex because of this song, even if we already separated he'd randomly text me about the things he wants to do to me (and yes we still talk, sometimes, or when he remembers i exist) 😦 especially at the "something they all want that only you can have" part, man already is with someone else but for some reason he REALLLLYYY just wants to bag me and make a moment we'd both remember for as long as we'd live, technically since it was a long distance relationship we'd be strangers until we meet up irl, it's not like he's obsessed with me, but more like he puts me on a pedestal or he thinks that I'm a trophy he's been waiting to have- in a way it's sweet but also kinda terrifying lol

This song is so incredibly relatable, personally it really speaks to the experience of how young women sexualise themselves in desperation for attention. In my own experience it speaks to how my desperate plea for attention led to me being assaulted by my only friend, the dirty feeling it left me with, but I couldn’t walk away from it because I’d ultimately bought it on myself, I enjoyed the attention so how could I refuse it

I loveeee this song. It’s my first time that I listened to her and it got me into her music. Sooo erotic so psychedelic and eerie at the same time. And I absolutely LOVE the guitar at the bridge

This song was dedicated to me by a girl working at the hong kong. I met her there but lately i been a part of her life.she tells me that she can see right thru me and what she sees is kind of scary. But then she refers to this song telling me that if it feels that good it can't be bad. She likes that i drive a 2013 black toyota camri level 3+

I'm scared that people find this sexy but i guess some people don't have sexual violence memories triggered by it? Idk i was surprised when i first heard someone call it sexy. Its terrifying!! Love ethel cain

You’re right, but people think it’s sexy because of the production plus removal of context

@@matthewvillegas3622 yeah I knew the story of ethel cain before hearing this song so I had that context. But I think some are just very sensitive when something is alluding to s*xual v*olence. I think that is makes this song great cuz it works as a painful, powerful portrayal of abuse but also can be found to be sexy and intense.

It's one of /those/ songs. Up there with "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails. It can be appreciated both ways; personally as a survivor of CSA it strikes me as erotic with a deep undertone of emptiness and rot, and it makes me feel beautiful but also uncomfortable, which I always appreciate in music. It disturbs the part of me that's comfortable and comforts the part of me that's disturbed. ::)

EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT

I think Ethel made the song with a sensual type of instrumentation and production on purpose. It is supposed to sound sexy, but once you know the context; that's when the song becomes dark and twisted. Its supposed to reflect the character's desire for connection by sex, but deep inside, she's only getting hurt.

not this song this one is about her getting pimped
@Lilbee730
@Lilbee730 6 ай бұрын
it functions as both, imo, and that's what's so powerful about it. narratively, yes, it's about getting pimped out by a guy who murders and vores her, being fetishized for being trans, for having her sexual agency taken away. but on the surface it is just a fucking sexy ass song about being fire as fuck in bed. the brilliance really reveals itself when you look deeper than the surface level, but it totally operates on both.
