You have to love what these guys are doing. It helps young guitar players like me when you see people who show you what kind of products are out there. Thanks chappers and lee for all of the inspiration you guys have had on my guitar journey.

Glad you like it - I'm not even really sure where I picked it up from. I think it comes from being a fairly limited player, so I try to compensate by making what I can play sound really soulful. I've always loved players that can get one stellar note (like Paul Kossoff), rather than lots of notes & no feel.

Yeah, the Premium Plus has a flame maple top too as opposed to the solid colour standards which have regular plain maple tops. That's pretty much what justifies the price difference

I watched this and went on operation "Gibson" code for dads going to buy another guitar! Picked my girls up from work/college (wife in bed after night shift as nurse) waited while she went to sleep. Off to Guitar shop. Sneaked it home and into back room with other Guitars. WOW what a player its fantastic!

If you like the Les Paul Standard just the way it was, then buy a Traditional, but if you like the sort of switching that PRS offer, then the Les Paul Standard 2012 is for you. No one is right or wrong, its just a case a of personal preference.

That blow switch is so useful. Angus young would love that because he always turns his volume knob down for rhythm and cranks it for leads. With that it would just be pull and shred

I got to play one of these today, and I was totally blown away. I'm a Charvel guy, and this neck was VERY Charvel like. Felt amazing. And sound... Wow. For my ears, and ability, this guitar is a game changer for Gibson. I would not consider buying one of these before; but now, I will buy the first trans black that show up in the local shop that I buy from.

@gtu734 You're slightly incorrect. In this Standard, it's a coil Split, though it is incorrectly labelled (by Gibson) as a coil tap. A Coil Split shunts one coil, leaving you with a "single coil". A coil tap still uses both coils, but it cuts out a portion of the windings, or "taps" the coil. There's a difference.
@lukedeacon
@lukedeacon 12 жыл бұрын
The bypass switch description is on this video is misleading. When activated it doesn't mean just bridge humbucker direct to output regardless of all other knob settings. The bridge pickup coil tap still kicks in if activated whilst bypass is also activated. So if you want humbucker/direct sound you have to ensure the bridge volume knob is pushed in as well.

They sort of brushed off the different method used for weight relief between these two guitars, but the 2012 model uses what Gibson calls " modern weight relief", which is basically 10 conical shaped cavities placed around the body of the guitar, as opposed to nine round holes concentrated near the bottom side of the body. I have the 2012, the sound is far woodier, more resonant.

A much needed improvement over the Traditional Pro (which is quite heavy but with coil taps) - - add in a weight relieved body, out of phase and direct out and voila, you have a winner. Thanks for a great review - as always!

Actually, after owning the 08 Standard for a few years now, I've surprisingly grown to like the input jack. I thought I would hate it at first, but it's a very solid sturdy connection without any wobble to it. And I've also leanred to unplug it pretty easily on the fly. Like most players, I wrap my cord around the back straplock, so ripping it out at a live gig was never an issue for me. I think the 'stepping on cable' concept is flawed, but the neutric jack is rock solid and I like it.

The Andertons videos helped me to choose the '12 Les Paul and I couldnt be happier. It is an amazing playing, feeling, and sounding guitar. The tonal options are incredible. You get the classic Les Paul tone and sustain with the added coil taps, and the out of phase tone is sweet. I think the new weight relief of the '12 is an improvement over the chambers of the 08 as it leaves allot more wood mass and overall a more substantial feel w/out being too heavy. Mine weighs 9.25lb.
@LesterPaul01
@LesterPaul01 12 жыл бұрын
So it's a hyped up Traditional pro. I do like the chambered bodies. I personally like a heavy paul but the tone that is achieved with chambering is sweet. It adds sort of an acoustical tone to it. Rock on!

I own a 2008 les paul, after trying many many 2012's 2008's and traditionals, and you really CANNOT get the difference from any video, i watched this before i went to play and thought the 2012 was the guitar for me, but in reality (for me) it was NOTHING on the raw power and neck of the 2008 even then, I had to play about 10 2008's before i found the perfect guitar.. and i couldn't be happier with the result... you have to PLAY these guitars, they really are something special, and very personal.

I'd also like to mention that the "compound radius" has nothing to do with neck width. It represents the curvature of the fretboard. Basically, if you were to transpose the curvature of the fretboard to a full circle, the "radius" of that circle is the radius of the fretboard. It's 10" at the 1st fret, which is fairly flat but still has a curve to make chording easier, while the 16" radius up at the 12th fret is much flatter, making it easier to bend notes without "fretting out".

Yea, I know. Never said that. When they are sitting and playing the demo, they both have standards, sir. Rob w/ the 2012, Lee w/ the 2008. It is written on the truss cover of both guitars. When they show the shots of the two stocks they are showing the two 2012s. Not the 2008 Std which Lee is playing. The only LP Traditional is shown at around 18:00 where the differences are explained. Where else do you see Lee use a Tradtl? Why would they compare a '08 Trd to a '12 Std. Read the video title.

With all this coil splitting,tapping going on. It reminds me when I was kid during the 70's. You could buy a stereo that had a turntable, cassette deck, 8 track and radio in one unit. I thought is sounded great until my friends older brother let us hear his component system where each system was a seperate unit linked together via cables to the main stereo. The sound was awesome. So was the price.LOL. Rock on!

thanks for all your great videos and talent, i realy enjoy this channel. Only thing is the close miking of the amps doesnt sound like what you hear in the room ! I find this sound doesnt give an idea of what the guitar player is enjoying, instead we are left with that flat sound that even your condenser mike doesnt help. I find mikes on cameras give an overall more natural sound if not to far away from amp

That is not really what i would call a "tuning" issue generally, it is an intonation issue that is not specific to Les Pauls. All guitars have that and it is because the G string was originally meant to be wound rather than plain like your B and high E. You can fix it by changing your nut, but almost any production guitar will have this issue with a stock nut...

just to be clear: You understand Lee is holding 2 different guitars in the vid correct? First the 2008 Std, then at 13:03 he appears with a 2012 Traditional. Might be confusion in the text. :) I thought, that you thought the '08 Std he had in the beginning was the Trd. You must be looking at later in the vid. Cheers

I have, and they are really nice guitars as well. Really well balanced and the neck on the handful that I've played have felt really good. Slightly more chunky than the '60's slim taper profile, but still really, really nice.One thing I don't care for on the PRS guitars I've played are the pickups. But, I may be the only person alive who loves the Gibson 500T.

I bought a Les paul traditional recently (supposedly in honey burst but i think it's the new finish they call caramel burst) and I'm so glad i did, the big neck, flame top and old school les paul tones are unbeatable. The 2012 standard was very very nice to play, but it just didn't sound like a thick and chunky les paul to me and i only found the phase switch pot useful.

the coil tapping reminds me of the 2006 fender highway one, except fender achieved the sound by using a reverse wound central single coil pickup, so when the switch was in 2nd or 4th position the pickups acted like humbuckers.. kinda like approaching the same tone from a different angle...funny how guitars have changed over time :) great overview though guys :)
