I love these LP Tributes man. They’re simple and I think the fact they don’t have binding and have a thin lacquer finish makes them sound really good. There’s something about a Gibson Les Paul too. It’s hard to describe but when you bend a string it gives a little and if you dig in and play aggressively it actually sounds better instead of choking out. They’re just awesome.

Went to buy my first les Paul, always been a Strat guy. Wanted to buy one to last me and meet my needs. I played the standard 50’s, standard 60’s, and this tribute. I just got mine in today in the faded cherry burst and I was also so impressed by the way it pops in person. Guitar feels incredible in the hands. I kind of like the no frills look, it sets it apart from every other LP and LP copy with binding, gives it more of a retro feeling, like you just stumbled on an early prototype model they had in the back of the factory.

Along the way I’ve been lucky enough to have owned two different 2018 LP Tributes - the ones that have the proper woods and the 498/490 pickups before they changed the neck to maple and the pickups to a 490/490 set. Sounded awesome and felt great to play. Very cool guitars.

Agreed, Gibson's sleeper LP of the last decade. Cryo frets, Plekked, solid body (8lb 6oz), Mahogany neck etc. I had to try 4 to find a good one, but it's stayed and the other LPs have gone. Guts, sustain and playability whilst the simple looks of a working guitar do it for me. Leftie too, because they sound better!

I know this might sound odd, but I actually prefer the Les Paul Tribute the most out of all the current Les Pauls. I actually like the matte finish, the natural wood "binding" around the top and the simple, stripped-down look it has. It just works for me. Although, the flame maple top on the one you demo'ed is a bit of an exception though. The vast majority of them have plain tops and only every once in awhile you'll see one with figuring in the maple. You got lucky with that one. Especially for a lefty model. All in all though, the Les Paul Tribute is an awesome guitar. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. Just plug it in and rock out!

Thanks for this comment! I'm contemplating my first Les Paul, and my head is swimming with the options. Haha. On the one hand, I like the "no frills, what you see is what you get" + satin neck on this bad boy, but on the other hand, the Classic has all those various coil tap / phase switches that seems super-versatile.
@Eywadude3 жыл бұрын
@@goosegaskins Haha. Good ol' option paralysis. Always a good "problem" to have! 😁 But yeah, the Tribute is an awesome guitar. I'd love to get one, but sadly, money is still tight for me right now. The Tribute really is a true player's guitar. Like I said, it's everything you need and nothing you don't. The Classic is also a great guitar, but I'd highly suggest you play one before buying one if you can. The idea of having all the various coil splitting and out-of-phase options can seem like a great idea at first, but sometimes over time they become less and less of something that people want to use. There are also plenty of people who don't like the sound of the switching options, so be sure to try them in-person before buying a Classic to see if you might be one of those people. Me personally, I like the out-of-phase tone, but I don't like split coil sounds. At least with the Tribute you know what you're getting: a true classic-style Les Paul. Just try a Classic first before putting down your hard earned cash. In the end, you may just wind up saving yourself a bit of money. 😉

These things are amazing. I was selling some gear at my local guitar store and blindly picked up a LP to pass the time (with no intentions to buy). Well I fell in LOVE with the feel, and the sound, and played for two hours. I looked at the headstock, then the price, and was floored. After my sell-off and a trade-in discount I walked out with the guitar. The guitar I never knew I needed. Satin honey burst is what I ended up with. @@automatoncollectives7237 I think you fail to see the human context of my statement. I was clearly excited by the guitar quality not matching the price-point - in my experience. I have experience with and own more expensive guitars in the Gibson range. So you can argue, if you feel it makes the world better, that my use of the word amazing is somehow wrong. Got one of these in Cherry Sunburst (Yes I know!) a few years ago. I absolutely love it. It has got a big tone but definitely thinner and brighter sounding than my Traditional that has Classic 57s. Some people are going to prefer that, some not. Personally I think the brighter tone is a little more authentic to the essence of a 50s Les Paul. The 490 pickups are a very good PAF clone. The big mushy rock tones are really more of an 80s creation? Great if you want to sound like Slash widdling away on the neck pickup, but most people need something more from a guitar.

I purchased one last year, maple neck feels great. Your right about the 490s , I found that it wanted the middle position with some bridge mixed in it. Something I did was to pull the neck pickup and put ceramic 8 magnet in it, that cleaned it up a bit. I recently bought a Vox AC30 and it sounds fantastic on that. Sweetwater let me choose between 4 tops that they had in stock and it came with a pretty nice one. I love the exposed top edge instead of binding, has a real high end look to it. My thoughts, I agree 100% with you Shane great buy for the money. J-J

Mine didn’t have the best fret crowns or edge dressings. It stayed in tune for the most part, but the G would always need a retuning between plays. My budget lies somewhere between a Epiohone LP Custom or a Gibson LP Tribute. Musically, I play anything from folk to rock and some punk (still prefer humbuckers over P-90's) I like the idea of the Epi Custom for versatility (coil splitting, etc). Although I also lean towards a Gibson for the quality and longevity, both of the woods used and the electonics. Anybody care to weigh in with experience or thoughts? Much appreciated 🙏

Yes, the Standard looks nicer, feels nicer, even smells nicer; however there is nothing the Standard can do that the Tribute can't. It always cracks me up when people say that Gibsons are 'too expensive' when they offer this stripped down US made version of the Les Paul at a very fair price point. BTW if the matte finish bothers anyone, it can be polished to a gloss (search KZbin for demos on how to do this).

I have a 2018 Tribute Gold Top. It is one of my top guitars, it plays so well I was thinking of buying a second one when they were still under $1,000. Still think about buying a second one but not sure about the maple neck.

I know you were playing some bluesy/rock stuff, but they were chillout music as well. I can listen to you play all day, especially by the beach or some body of water. Just great music! Anyways, your review makes me wanna get one of these Tributes.

Awesome video as always Shane, I just picked up the satin iced tea tribute from SKY Music. Wouldn't have known about them if not for you and I used to work 10 minutes away from the store 😂

Ah an Aussie boy. Where are you? Love the multi-playing at the start. What we need it it through a 100w Marshall with a wah-wah (CryBaby etc).

You always get great tones man! I went to buy one of these but ended up walking away with an sg tribute instead because the sg felt and sounded a little nicer. I wonder sometimes if I made the right choice but I do love my sg. I got an epiphone les paul studio recently to satisfy my need for a les paul and it's a nice guitar too. One day I'll get a proper U.S.A. Gibson Les Paul though.

Epi has really stepped up their game too. The standard 50's and 60's are great, and the 59' LP is amazing with all the USA parts and wiring. I was going to get either the standard 60's or the 59' but I ended up going with the tribute to actually be able to own a proper USA Gibson, though I think I'm going to get the epi firebird

One thing, the necks on the new ones (since 2019) are maple, at least as per Gibson). That said, I wish bourbon/tobacco burst had been available in 18 when I bought mine. I went in to buy the goldtop, but the honeyburst just felt better. It was also a floor model,, so a couple nicks and scratches.. i paid $800usd tax included. Iirc, 2018 was the only year with no weight relief. It also had 490/498 pickups. I didnt care for the 498, so I swapped both pups to Burstbucker 1 (nickle neck, double black bridge) I also threw in a Creamtone 57-59 drifted harness. Now other than the color, its a perfect Les paul for me. I still kinda want a new 50's standard, but doubtfull I'll buy one. Just can't see paying 3 times more for what amounts to binding.

Hi Shane, the 490R is in the neck and the 490T is on the bridge side (you have it in reverse with your commentary).

I just picked up this exact model left handed and all and I absolutely love it. You have captured the tone of this guitar perfectly. Any chance of a review on the gibson les paul modern? Great video love the channel.

This is completely a personal preference but I prefer a LP with the binding. Its why I've never been a fan of the look of LP Studios.

Honestly it sounds as good as anything I've heard from Gibson guitars 2 to 3 times the price point.. It's a professional rocking axe..

Looks nice without binding & beautiful satin color. Great demo & sounds good. Cheers.

Another great review I was lucky enough to score a Epiphone 59 with pretty much all the Gibson parts and same burst as that. Great sound out of the Blues deluxe tweed (one day it’s a must) that single tube driver I didn’t catch who makes it. Like to look one up. Thanks for the vid. Stay strong and well. Cheers Matt 👍😎🇦🇺 go out there and support the best and most honest and Australian guitar show on utube, grab a hoodie as we head for the cooler months ahead!!

This a great guitar and the best value for money in the Gibson lineup (apart from the LP Special). The pickups, the 490's, is actually the best ones Gibson makes. I've got a LP Standard from 1995 which has the same pups (perhaps a 498 in the bridge) and I like those better than all the Burst Buckers, Classic 57's and even SD Antiquities. There's a reason Gibson upgraded to those in the 80's from the actual vintage pickups. Vintage doesn't equal better. Also, the maple neck on this is another pro. More durable than mahogany and it doesn't make any difference soundwise. I would actually prefer if the neck were a multipiece, that would make it even more dureable. Is it? Does anyone know?
