I've only seen Gibson headstock repairs involving splines, dowels or jointed inserts before. Never a glue up followed by mahogany laminations. Very innovative! 👍

I didn’t understand removing the original volute but it turned out terrific. One question, if you were going to do a new veneer to rebuild the volute was adding splines for strength unnecessary?

Wow, truly amazing repair job. You can't even see the original break! You are truly a master luthier. I bet the guitar sounds better & stays in tune longer now! Kudos to you & the lucky customer who obviously chose the right person to fix their guitar.

The break is completely hidden and the repair is flawless, but no structural support was done. All that holds it together is glue on an imperfect joint, which is now weak. The slightest knock will break it again. Splints would make it stronger, it just wouldn’t look perfect.
@peachmelba10002 жыл бұрын
I agree. The repair is gorgeous, however the layers of veneer add only mass. This might help the headstock survive a slight knock, but certainly not a fall or drop.

As with all of your videos, I'm amazed at the final result and totally mesmerised by the steps you take to achieve it. I'm fairly sure that this repair took longer to do than the original guitar took to build at the factory. Blown away as always. Love your work. I hang on a thread waiting for the next one.

Thank you for your lovely comment! I'll do my best to upload next one as soon as possible.So please wait little longer.
There are plenty of comments on the luthiery, and I agree it is unparalelled craftsmanship. I would like to compliment the videography and say that I would love to see longer videos.

Headstock break aka The longtime Gibson syndrome. Apart from the one piece neck on some models, the angles in neck joint and headstock makes me anxious even just to lay one on the floor. That's why we never see this with Fenders.

The beautiful Epiphone Sheraton 50 year anniversary model (1962 made and numbered) from 2012 is at my luthiers, after having sustained a broken headstock during shipping, even though it was in the grey hard case it came with. The guitar was insured, but I want to keep it, so it went to my luthier instead of being returned. Unfortunately the seller forgot to pad the neck INSIDE the case too, so the neck rest broke the headstock when it was thrown around by harried FedEx employees. Let that be a lesson - always pad INSIDE the case when shipping guitars. My luthier is charging me the minimum for a headstock break repair ($100) since it was a relatively clean break (sure looked ugly to me!). Probably many owners of guitars with broken headstocks are reading this. On the brighter side, I've read that guitars with repaired headstocks are stronger afterwards, and often sound better too..? EDIT: I forgot to add this was the most impressive headstock repair I've ever seen!

Wish they fixed my 1971 B45-12 like that. They didn't and now they own it! They did replace it with a J35, but my "mistress" is gone forever.
I just put my J45 in for a neck repair...so tempted to send this to the luthier. He's pretty good, but this is next level.

While a volute won't prevent a headstock break, a backstrap is a good way to hide a repair.
I wonder if repairs to the headstock like this affect sustain?

simply the best! Don't know anyone in US or EU with your skillset... you are a true master.
Having done cabinetmaking in my youth, I ought to know the root cause behind headstock breaks on any Gibson guitar, which is Gibson's greatest Achilles Heel. Given the neck is sawn from a single piece of timber, the grain runs parallel to shaft until it reaches the angle of the headstock, where the grain runs diagonally. This is the area where all headstock failures occur; from the truss rod nut as in this video to anywhere in the vicinity of the recess beneath the cover, which is the weakest area coupled with the grain running diagonally. Gibson has tried to address the problem in a number of ways such as reducing the angle from 17 to 14 degrees, adding a volute and using three to five piece shafts. Most Chibsons (Chinese knockoffs) are constructed creating the angle using a scarf join, which makes for a stronger system. The disadvantage of a scarf join is its nonfeasibility with natural finishes in which the seam is clearly visible and hence it is covered over with an opaque finish in the vicinity of the join.
@jaorte102 жыл бұрын
nice work, I didn't think glue alone would be strong enough. Most of other luthiers rout 2 trusses in at the break. then do the finish work.
