From Gibson:
The Gibson SG Standard rocks the classic looks and features associated with the late '60s style SG models sought after by many. A rounded profile mahogany neck, bound rosewood fingerboard, long tenon 19th fret neck joint, and a solid mahogany body provide the backbone for singing sustain. The 490R and 490T Alnico II pickups provide the power to drive. A black, 5-ply, full-face pickguard set this SG Standard apart from others... a truly versatile classic.

i love comments like where people share their own tried and true configuration, how to apply it and what the result it. Theres so many functions on guitars (sometimes too many) that i feel many new players are completely intimidated by them and just have them either all the way up or some on, some off hoping for the best.

I've always preferred the Standard over the 61 mainly because of the bigger neck joint. Just feels more secure without feeling bulky. Plus the back of the treble horn is beveled as to where the 61, Special, and TI are not.

I have three SG’s, one of them is a 19’ Standard and it’s an incredible axe. I purchased it a husk to avoid the max cost of a new one I’d just replace a few components anyhow. I wired in a set of Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Specials with an Emerson harness, Schaller tuners, then a Bigsby w/ a Schaller roller bridge and it’s probably my number one go to axe, love it. The necks right in the middle too, it too thin nor too chunky. Just a pleasure to play 🤙

I've been torn between the Standard and '61 but your reviews have really cleared things up for me. I love the Standard's fuller pickguard and the thicker neck but the fact Gibson couldn't give the Standard it's own iteration of pickups and no hardshell case for the price point is a deal breaker. So the '61 in Cardinal Red Burst is on my radar. Thanks man you have the best reviews!

The SG is my all time favorite Gibson model. I bought my lefty SG Standard back in 2011. I believe the specs are nearly identical to the newer ones, except mine came with a 498T in the bridge. Fatter neck, which I also prefer, balances beautifully, sustain for days, and the playability and tones are fantastic. SGs don't seem to get credit for how beautiful they sound clean too. Wonderfully chimey top end.

I always prefer the look of the large guard . . . but I wouldn’t be mad if someone handed me a Gibson SG with a small guard, lol. About the neck dive, I tend to think most of the people complaining tend to keep their guitar low slung and/or have a strap with slippery material. A strap change and/or cinching the strap will fix that problem. You can also tie the strap above the headstock with a shoelace or small piece of leather like those who play acoustic guitar, uke, and other stringed instruments that don’t have a second strap button at the heel of the neck. Even when it does have a second, a lot of acoustic players prefer tying the strap up behind the nut because it just keeps a slippery instrument from moving around too much against one’s shirt and/or pants. Not sure why more electric guitar players don’t use this method, but I can promise there would be zero neck dive. The headstock would stay in exactly the right position 100% of the time. 😉👍🏻

My ebony 2005 SG Standard was my favorite guitar, favorite neck ever and best sound of any other I had, loved it from the moment I wrapped my hand around the neck. Used to be a Fender person, that SG ruined that. Sold it to pay some bills but bought another one as soon as I could.

I just bought a new Standard last week. I tried the 61 as well. While I found the bridge pickup a little hotter in the 61, I liked the 490R in the Standard better. I like the big pickguard. I also found that the fatter neck was more comfortable for me. I have a 60s Standard Les Paul with a slim neck, but the 61 felt different and just didn't work for me. I also liked the Grovers better than the rotomatics. I think for the money, the regular Standard is the better option.

I've had a lot of SG's since I started playing in 1969. Of course I regret letting some of them go. The last one I bought new in 2012 for $1299, including the brown hard case. Someone fell asleep with the sander in their hand, the neck was really thin, almost like the Ibanez Wizard neck! I like thicker ones, 58-59 LP type. I also hoard guitar parts, and I have a collection of custom pups. I almost bought a PRS 594 'S', and I have a set of (Maryland) 58/15 LT pups. But I really want an SG for work. I love the thicker neck, and I have a set of Duncan/Bonamasa PAF's MJ wound. I'll also change the wiring to 50's with top 10% parts, and some special oil caps I've saved. I may even route a small trench, and move the selector switch to the top horn, and make a cover for it. The weight is perfect, same as my hard tail Strat!! I have flight cases for transport. Thx!! 8) --gary

Mine is .88 1st fret and nut is 1.68 pretty much same as my ‘64 VOS 335…. First thing you do with these, or I do with them, is chuck the pickups and circuit board in the drawer and pop in some good pickups, pots with treble bleed and Orange drops and switch. Then add a flat bottom pickup ring to bridge pickup, or a small block of wood to get the right angle on bridge pickup. It is affordable and a rock n roll blues machine, but its not without its weaknesses. They can all be addressed.

I bought an unplayed Gibson SG Std Ltd Ed from an estate sale. The guy passed away before playing it. Even CAL hardshell Canadian made case which was still in a sealed bag. I took it home in the case for exactly $800.00 USD. I found out that in 1974 Gibson released more or less this same guitar as a Ltd. Ed. to show off it's new 57 Classic PU's. In 1975 year it became standard in all SG Std. Evidently Gibson found a box of old t-top PU's and thought they would do Ltd. Ed of a ...Ltd Ed, LOL. The best I can find out is there were 30 made like mine. The original had an according bridge this does not and the Grovers on this one are locking. The color on both is a vintage sunburst. A kind of medium brown stain that gets very dark on the perimeter. it virtually has no neck dive. It feels very light but I do not have a scale. I bought it to flip as I am a pensioner and I buy and flip estate sale musical instruments. Usually a nice old Dano is all I find. Anyhow I plugged it into my old 50 watt Plexi and hit a couple of chords. Instant ....WTF!!!! It sounds like decades old recordings I have ...so close you would swear they had my guitar. I flipped my old PRS instead. It is my go to!!!

I have a Gibson SG Special from a few years ago. It’s by far the nicest playing guitar I’ve ever owned, and I’m not just saying that because it’s a Gibson. But for the price I paid I was really disappointed to see PCB in the control cavity of the guitar. I know it doesn’t really matter from a technical perspective, but you’re paying a premium for a guitar that’s supposed to play and look beautiful inside and out. Not to mention for the price they’re charging for these guitars, you’d think they’d just put the effort into doing a simple wire harness. Even my $500 Gretsch Electromatic Jet has a hand-wired harness. But if I was buying a SG Standard, I’d be really annoyed to see a PCB in it lol. They’re practically $2,000 nowadays!

I just bought the Gibson SG Standard, Cardinal Red burst, got a great deal on it. It was brand new but marked down so i asked if there was any more wiggle room and they gave me another $100 off. It made the decision between the Gibson and the Epi 61 much easier as the price difference was a lot smaller. $1000 for an Epi that would have been ordered in and would not have been able to play until it got there, or the Gibson for $1299 and I had already been able to handle it and see how it was set up. NO brainer.

I think your review is spot on. Weird the standard is a step up from the special yet the special comes with a hard case and the standard doesn't... usually the higher priced model gets the hate case. I think the 490 and 498 pickups are just as good as any... they used those in cheaper Gibson models all the way to custom shop models. I have had those on several of my Gibson's... but I agree I prefer the 61's in the Gibson 61 reissue more... they really make the SG sing... and the pickguard on the 61 looks way better... I always thought the standard pickguard is ugly... but definitely a matter of taste. I own the 61 reissue. I may have bought a standard if I didn't get the 61 for peanuts... like $1,200 in mint condition with a hard case. I like it better than the standard but would have been fine with the standard too... other than having to look at the ugly pickguard...

I'm the opposite! I prefer the 490/498's over the Burst Buckers, 57 classics and whatever they're called. I like the slightly thicker neck more on these and to me the big pickguard on the Standards looks waaay better than the smaller one on the vintage reissues.

@@felixfranzen7578 everyone definitely has different taste when it comes to the look of a guitar and the pickups. I do love the clarity of the 61 pickups... but I also like the warmth of the 490 and 498 combo. I have a PRS Chris Robertson with a super wide fat neck and it doesn't work as well in my hands as a slimmer neck... but all depends on hand shape too. It's like motorcycles... I think Harley's are the ugliest motorcycles on the planet... but I love the cafe racer look of triumph. My brother is the opposite and a die hard Harley fan... so who has better taste? I'd really like to see a comparison with comparable Epiphones because of cost? Also I read that some SGs have slightly wider spaces between strings, which would be important to me and my chubby fingers. What models to look for?
@eurly93
@eurly93 11 ай бұрын
Epiphone has 80% the sound of Gibson, and 100% if you upgrade the electronics but they usually FEEL cheap by comparison. Specifically in poly vs nitro finish, pots, and other hardware. But if all you care about is the SG sound, the $1,000 price difference isn't worth it but when you have the 'real' version of a guitar (ie Gibson SG, Les Paul, MIA Strat) it is legitimately more inspiring to play bc there's 0 excuse. You as the player are the only limiting factor and it makes you want to live up to the instrument. When you have the Epiphone, Squier brands, you get everything you need and nothing you want. Gritty frets, less than stellar intonation, cheaper feeling and looking finishes, etc. Certainly nothing to stop making good music but if you know what a higher end guitar feels like, you'll never stop noticing some of the cost cutting.

I decided to get the Special. I had a ‘90-something Junior with the P90, sold it, went through several guitars, and wanted that back. And the Special does exactly that, with a bonus neck pickup. For the humbucker sound I’ve got the Epi ‘61 Les Paul SG with the burstbuckers and…. Well, it does that, in spades, and at a great price. I’ve never been big on the batwing. I don’t want to take off the bridge to tinker, and the small guard just gives the look more real estate. That’s just me, though.

I'd say only other guitar that compared was an epiphone g400 satin finish smaller pickguard but I'd say it was actually more vintage than the gibson. Yours has far advanced electronics than mine did. I'm looking again but for the money I'm probably gonna have to find a epiphone g400. I wish I'd had a chance to try different pickups in mine. I actually had a spare 498t bucker I later put in my friends sg epiphone. But I would have def went with a bb3 in mine the 498t is good but imp bb3 for the win .

Yeah, we all know it's a classic guitar with a classic tone, etc but will it stay in tune? A lot of players say no.

Why do so many of the Gibson SG DEMO guitars for sale have cracks at the neck / nut? Doesn’t Gibson know how to make a reliably built neck?

I played an sg standard all through the late 60s to the late 70s, made my living with a sg and two and ahalf,marshalls two 200 watt heads. I then bought a les paul custom.l just got a sg standard,and my les paul is too damn heavy,so l never play it.neck dive? Never one time in 20 years,and due to theft, l had seven of them.l played rock festivals.nothing compares with the terror of having your guitar go down,or out of tune in front of thousands of people.l cant tell the difference from my seven I had in that period from the one I got three years ago. The so called case sucks. It would fall apart on tour. Probably after the plane loading crew got a hold of it. I HAD TO PAY FOR A SEAT WHEN I FLEW TO ENGLAND, FOR MY GUITAR.,,,,l.

I really wish theyd switch from the 490r and 490t to something else. The 490r is muddy and the 490t is doesnt have any guts. I've had them in SGs and Les Paul and no amount of adjusting ever satisfied me. I've got Duncans and Wolfetones in them now.

Which another SG, Epiphone or another, has sound most like Gibson SG Standard with 490 humbuckers? Perhaps put 490 humbuckers in what Epiphone model?

I believe the tribute also has different tuners. Anyone know if the tribute STAYS in tune? That's my only concern when considering the tribute vs the standard.

Flawless tuning. I have a classic,standard and custom and the tribute has it all and the satin finish is perfect. The others you don’t even want to breathe on them because of the beautiful finish getting finger prints and the like. The tribute is the best thing going with any company now.

For the price an SG Standard should be equipped with Burstbuckers instead of those weak 490t and 490r pickups.

I love the large guard SGs but like the 61 for its slimmer neck. I'm small of hand and short of finger.. Gimme a slim neck🎸👍

With a slightly thicker neck, would this guitar be more or less inclined to neck dive? My first reaction would be MORE inclined, but in the video you don't seem to need to support it much.

I'll be honest - I believe SG neck-dive is mostly a myth, I've only experienced it in maybe one SG that I can remember. It's not generally a problem. Thanks for watching

I'm in the market and am looking at this and the '61. Crazy enough, for me it comes down to being able to easily drop in locking tuners without drilling new holes, etc. Can you provide links to the locking tuners for both of these guitars. Once I make my final decision, I'd be happy to buy it through your link. Thx!
@PlayandTradeGuitars
@PlayandTradeGuitars 9 ай бұрын
Thank you! There are locking tuner choices for either. The Standard comes with Grover kidneys (1 hole) making a seamless swap possible with the Grover 502 locking tuners and a number of others. The Standard 61 comes with Gibson Deluxe (2 holes per tuning machine) so you'd want to get the Kluson locking tuners or equivalent. Thanks for watching

i would agree. it's not for clean tones. unless it's blues and even then it's still gonna be a little dirtly.

Back in 2019 when the Times Square outlet of Guitar Center was open until doing business, there were 2 SG Standard models that looked identical to this one on the floor at (if memory serves) $1,149.99 each. I found myself wondering why they weren’t pricier and under clamps in the platinum room. I think I played each of them d would’ve been tempted to purchase one, only there were a few provisos. Just the year before, I had gotten a Les Paul Goldtop almost exactly like the one advertised near the beginning of this video; I was playing that year in a band with another guitarist who owned an ebony-finish SG Standard; I had heard the lore about it being top heavy and didn’t know how the neck dive could be combatted with a certain kind of strap. I’ve long appreciated how and why the SG was grabbed up and slung by Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Dicky Betts, Derek Trucks, Pete Townshend, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed, Carlos Santana, Terry Kath and (briefly) Tommy Shaw, among others. It’s lightweight and really puts it out. I can recall (when I was 14 in ‘94) seeing the footage of The Who on the Woodstock stage and confusing Pete’s SG with a Strat because of the Batwing guard.

Bought one last month, played it for two hours straight first time, loved it, but, the lacquer gummed and balled up on the upper neck. I then googled the issue, yep, tons of others, same problem. Also, neck had a kink in it, was told it needed a re fret, it was brand new. I now have the Epiphone version, prefer the poly,

What kind of pots are they? Analog? My 05 SG faded drives me nuts. I want to roll back the volume and it doesn’t do anything until 3-1 and its a quick shut off.
