Just to add - this is about the best produced, clearest comparison video between 2 guitars I have ever seen. Maybe a bit more detail on the finish would be helpful - particularly fret finishing. I particularly like how you play through the pickup settings - makes the differences very clear. So, Subscribed.

That’s awesome! It’s a fantastic guitar. I think one thing I wish I would have put in the video is that it’s not only a ‘great guitar for the price compared to the Gibson’, but it’s a great guitar out of all the guitars available in that price range.

You can not rely on these reviews. It's human nature to lean toward the "brand" guitars. If you have a minute, read my post. I think you will agree, at least somewhat.

@@CompanyGrip The Epiphone sounded better...Lol It's so crazy watching human nature completely erase reality from people when it comes to guitars. I can have any guitar I want, literally, and I have owned or played hundreds through the years. Back in the early days, Gibson and fender had the secrets but now everyone has the secrets, (TECHNOLOGY) to build outstanding guitars. You were bias immediately in the video which otherwise would have been a great video. I just wish people would open their eyes and ears and stop allowing the glory days of guitar to corrupt their line of thought. Good luck

The Epiphone's pickups in this demo sound incredible. The overtones you get in the Split/out of phase portions are fantastic. I'm a brand snob, admittedly - but this has me wondering if I don't need to call my sweetwater rep and get the Epi on the way to my house. This may be the most informative, well thought out and useful Gibson/Epi side-by-side on the internet.

Yes the Epiphone sounded far better. There were barely any mid tones from the Gibson. I am a 20+ year luthier so please do not take my comment personally, but the "surprise" people seem to have concerning how spectacular Epiphone guitars are today is astounding. Epiphone turned the corner at the turn of the century and since have produced some of the best guitars the world has ever seen yet you see comments like "Good (for the money)", which drives me nuts. So in other words, Epiphone, if they would only start to charge 5 prices for their guitars maybe then people would begin to show some respect? Its nuts really. Just check out the specs on the 60's tribute plus Les Paul which Epiphone built. THEN you can try to find a Gibson with the same parts and configuration but until you get up into the "Custom Deluxe" series of guitars, you won't see it.

Great comparison. I've had my Rickenbacker 4001 bass for 42 years. Now I'm partial to USA made guitars. They have individual character when played. I don't find that with overseas mass produced guitars. So, for the professional player I believe the character of the guitar matters as much as the sound.

Very, very, very nice comparison video my man. Good info, straight to the point, good playing demo and comparison. Very nice job. Thanks for mentioning the body contour differences. That tends to be overlooked by many reviewers and to me it is one of the most glaring differences. Epi Les Pauls are the same way... top is less sculpted, cutaway is shaped different, etc. To me those differences take away from the beauty of the guitar, and they certainly affect the feel and playability. Again very nice video. I just subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more!

I bought the final version of the Tony Iommi SG Custom, which has the cross inlays all the way to the 24th fret, Gibson USA Iommi pickups, and even has the COA signed by Iommi (no small thing for a lifelong Sabbath devotee). I changed the tuners for no other reason than I just wanted Grover Minis on it. Absolutely outstanding guitar without a single flaw that I could detect. Plays great, sounds great, and looks the business! What Epiphone have done over the last 5 years or so is just astonishing. I also got the Brent Hinds Flying V Custom as well as the newest Prophecy LP and didn't change a thing on them. They are unbelievably good, and if you can find one of the Hinds V's for sale used it's going for double what I paid. Their top tier limited runs are where it's at, especially if you swing a deal (which I always do). Those reasons at the end of your video for buying a Gibson I totally get. I've always had that itch. But as far as actual real tangible reasons, you just aren't getting a 4x better guitar in my opinion. I'm stoked to play Epiphones. I will so though that I think for that PAF sound Gibson pickups are as good as it gets.

1st time viewer and I liked your comparison approach enough that I subscribed to your channel. 58 years ago I took my first lesson so I have owned a few Gibsons. I am still wrapping my head around the differences between Gibson/Epiphone quality differences and price comparison. I recently picked up a epi Joe Bonamassa 335 and I love it. I haven't been impressed with quality on Gibsons in a while now and once again the 2000 dollar difference in price is a lot of money, when there is a minimal difference. I actually like the Epi feel better. Bottom line is everything you discussed is exactly what I would want to hear on my next purchase. If the good lord decides I survive until then. So thank you. What I have found with Epiphone guitars (I have had about 9 or so over the last 25+ years) is the quality consistency can be unreliable. There are some Epiphones I've had that are phenomenal. They will almost always have some cosmetic issues, especially if you look closely at the frets and if there's chipping due to worn saw blades, with very little sanding down and smoothing of the fretboard at the notches. Or, check for excessive glue that wasn't completely removed; frets may not be plek'd or shaped as comfortably. Some of the internal wiring can be suspect, but is still reliable. Some of the binding, or the finish in general may have small cosmetic flaws. Things like that. With a Gibson, you are much MUCH less likely to come across such issues. You pick a Gibson off the shelf and play it, most likely things will play well, even straight from the factory. For many, the Gibson name evokes a lot of emotional attachment as well, which is an intangible factor for consideration. But, give an Epiphone a little love (and maybe another couple hundred dollars for proper upgrades and setup by a pro), it's easy to look past the cosmetic flaws that no one will notice unless way up close, and it will perform very nicely at that price point.

Very well done video. Hands down I would buy the Ep before the Gib. I demoed both of them and yes the body contours are nice on the Gib but in no way worth the extra money. You hit it on the head. I’ve got the earlier 2020 Blueberry Fade Gibson Modern SG and absolutely hated the strap button on the back of the top horn. I ended up moving it to the normal location at the back of the neck heel, and am much happier with it. I enjoyed the thoroughness of your comparison of the two. Personally, my choice of the Gibson Modern SG was easy….I like blue! If Epiphone had the Blueberry Fade finish, it would have made my choice more difficult. 😉

Thank you for the very complete review and demo it was very informative and nicely executed, however, from what I heard I couldn't agree with your opinion that "all 8 of the Gibson sounds were great and maybe only half the Epiphone sounds were good", as it seemed to me the sounds were extremely close (on my studio monitors) in that the Epiphone sounded as good to me for versatility purposes as in for example a project studio situation but maybe you were referring to a live sound situation, that said then it's just a difference of opinion, yet it was difficult to recall the sounds because by the time the many sound choices were finished being played I would loose track of the sounds at each position. I would have liked to have seen the comparison back and forth between brands with same selector positions. Now that is not to say (thinking out load) that with a small investment one couldn't upgrade the electronics (pots/ or whatever) and some hardware pieces (bridge/tailpiece), (season to taste) if someone decided to test the waters a bit. These are guitars that I am considering for a future purchase. Thanks again!
@CompanyGrip

Thank you for checking out the video and for the feedback! I agree that it was a difficult decision how to arrange the sounds, i.e., selector vs selector or one whole guitar vs the other. And, yes, agree with you that it’s difficult to accurately convey which one sounds better, record it, and then have it playback how it sounds vs my ears. But ultimately, like you say, it is just a matter of opinion. I don’t think the Epiphone is bad at all, but for my tastes and the music I generally play, it didn’t work out for me. Still a fantastic guitar for the price, and some people do prefer the Epi sounds, which makes it an even better guitar for them! 🤘🏽

1-Who keeps stock strap buttons on their guitar?? 2.-The Probuckers are slightly hotter Than Burstbuckers and the Probuckers produce a wider spectrum of tone, more articulate, at least on my graph, but I prefer 57 classic/classic plus in an SG. 3- The Epiphone uses 500k CTS,/Mallory, for Pots and Switchcraft input jack and switch. (*Note-Epiphone started the coil splitting in the humbucker guitars with the production of one of the best Les Paul models by anyone which was their 60's Tribute Plus, which came stock with 57's, Mallory, Switchcraft, etc. as well as Orange drop caps and occasionally emerson products.) And I really don't know what Gibson is using these days because the pots are labeled with the Gibson trademark or "brand." 4.- Does the inlay help the sound? 5.- Your mind is playing tricks on you concerning the "contour". 5 ounces??? Pressure??? I think it's just human nature.. 6.- Epiphone clean tones were MUCH more articulate, BUT you can always change the pickups in the Gibson if you wanted better tones, though Im not a fan of either guitars pickups personally. In summary--- You use words in a disparaging way every time you spoke of the Epiphone even though it sounded better and with my 30+ years experience based opinion, many times the Epis play much better. Words like "Bi and chunky" while pertaining to 5 ounces?? Sadly, many people who present themselves as presenting a non-bias opinion between Gibson and Epiphone tend to do the same thing so it's no surprise. But it would be nice to get an honest review, not that it matters because the majority of working musicians I am associated with generally don't use Gibson products simply because the prices are completely ridiculous, not because Gibson products suck or anything. Sure, Gibson has slacked off tremendously in their quality concerning their guitars while Epiphone, as many other less expensive guitar builders, have obtained the same technology and artistry that was once nearly exclusively owned by America. Therefore while Gibson and Fender slid low in quality, other companies grasp onto the practice of building great instruments and focused attention on the quality and detail. I suppose this is one reason there are so many more people today buying non "Brand", if you will, guitars. I sincerely hope Gibson, and Fender figure out a way to sale their products for the real musicians of the world instead of the weekend warriors or novice collectors of the world. Anyway, good demonstration of the two guitars, minus the disparaging remarks which were ALL directed towards the Epiphone. By the way, I am definitely buying the Epiphone SG in about 7 minutes.

You were close on the recap. They actually ended in with a 2019 HP model before going to Modern in 2019 as well, and the Modern is a toned down version of the 2019 HP. The HP-ii was created because of how many hated the robo tuners (me included), not because they forgot. The final also had a wider, soloist width neck. You touched on the titanium nut, but it was really cool that it was adjustable. The HPs and had cryogenically treated frets, which are supposed to be the longest lasting. Andertons had the best reviews each year with demos, if you want to check them out, and Gibson has Legacy pages if you search. The bankrupting was when they stopped offering annual updates, and that's when Gibson let Mark Agnesi share the current standard models on the Gibson TV KZbin channel.

Well, HP-II was a significant downgrade from HP-I. You can always replace autotuners, but HP-I also had a great flight case and a rosewood neck vs cheap looking fiber case and the controversial Richlite neck that diminished its value to many people.

Many thanks for this video, your diligence going through the different measurements etc was really appreciated. Very impressed. I've got the Epi but must admit it's too heavy for me. I didn't realise when shopping for an SG (all about the high neck access) it would be such a hefty block of wood to play and you do feel it on your neck after a while. I can play sat down but that's not what you're really getting an SG for is it? Will be returning and going shopping for the Epi SG Standard which hopefully will be a lot lighter for longer playing, even though it's missing a lot of the bells and whistles of the Modern which will be missed and that lovely asymmetrical 24 fret neck to play on. I do like coil taps/splits but it's covered by my PRS and Epi Nighthawk, I just want to have that nice top fret access the SG does so well.
@CompanyGrip

That’s true! And the Epi Standard will be 22 frets instead of 24. But, I’ll be honest with you, I’m a big SG fan, I have 6 of them, and my absolutely favorite is the SG Standard; so you’ll be in good hands! Thanks for checking out my video!

@CompanyGrip that's very reasuring to know, thank you. I will miss the 24 frets, but ultimately it's about the playability isn't it. Surprised it's not more of a thing to have 24 fret SG's as the Modern would be a perfect guitar without those layers of veneer. It's the most logical shape of guitar by far to get to that extra real estate that you can get to so easily!

Great comparison. I was pleasantly surprised at how bright the Epiphone sounds. I like the sound comparison (especially the clean), but it would also be good to have one additional - what it sounds like in a band mix (add a backing track). I suspect you'll find one better at cutting through the mix (the Epiphone). WRT comments about coil splitting - I use it all the time, typically one split and one in full humbucker mode - it just sounds cleaner than dual humbucker. I've got LP Modern, Sheraton II Prio, and a Joe Pass Pro - and the coil splitting is a great feature on each (at least for me). While the Tele and the Strat are great, the mix of a true humbucker and coil-split humbucker sounds unique - a clear tone with a little more growl.
@CompanyGrip

I agree with you that I found a mix of the two sounds (hum + split) to be the most versatile - at least for me. Thanks for checking it out! And, yes, I agree a backing track would be good. The Burstbucker Rhythm and Lead pups on the Gibson SG Modern, the (+) means nothing if it follows that what they did with the 2022 Gibson Les Paul 60's Standard and the Gibson Les Paul 60's Classic that came with the Burstbucker 61 Rhythm and Lead. I bought these two Les Pauls and noticed that the pup in the bridge in both the Standard and the Classic were the same as on the neck so I contacted Gibson and they told me that: "Yes, they are the same pick up in both positions because we decided to go back to basics and copy the way Les Pauls were made in the 50's which meant placing the same pick up in both positions." This is what I was told by Gibson but if you ask me I think it's just to minimize expenses.

Nice comparison video! I now have a few newer Epiphones, including a 335 Pro and a Riviera P93T. Both of those were made in Epi's Custom Shop, and are damn near flawless. The necks on both are maybe even a bit nicer to play on than quite a few newer Gibsons I've tried. The 335 has the same pickups as that SG, and the Riviera actually has US made P90s. I seriously couldn't be happier with these, and especially compared to the price point of a real 335 I would totally buy both of these again. The Memphis made 335s played better, but compared to the current Nashville 335s, these Epis really hold their own. (oh, and both of mine have clear finishes on the necks, so you can see they are mahogany or similar)

Thorough SG Modern comparison thanks! Waiting for a Gibson SG Modern Blueberry to show up used. I'm wondering if the control cavity of both are close to same dimensions as thinking of putting Gibson PCB and quick connect pups in an Epi as a project guitar. Currently have a 2018 SG Special with stock Firebird minis and 24 frets. It's awesome, but has some QC issues, typical for that era that I hope don't extend to newer models.
@CompanyGrip
@CompanyGrip 11 ай бұрын
Good question! I’m pretty sure the cavities are similar dimiensions, and actually the Modern might even be a bit bigger as the body is a touch thicker than a standard SG. It’s interesting, my 2019 SG Standard has a Gibson PCB and the Modern has traditional wiring. You’d think it would be the other way around. Regardless, I’ve bypassed the PCB in the standard, put in some CustomBuckers and had my tech wire it old school.

I have a 2018 HP II SG Mojave Fade, a finish you do not mention. It retained the wide neck, of the 2018 HP, 1.745" at the nut, and has locking tuners. The HP II came with the carbon fibre coffin case, unique to the late 2018 HP models. I prefer the strap button near the horn. As for colours, I love the Mojave Fade. I also have the 2018 Les Paul HP in blood orange fade, which is really more of a nice wine red. The LP has the Burstbuckers later also used on the Modern. The heavier bridge and tailpiece on the Epiphone is probably a plus - less neck dive?. That Epiphone looks like good value, and much more tonal variety than the Gibson.

Thanks for checking out the video and thanks for your comment! Yes, I learned after making this from another viewer with a similar guitar such as yours that there were some additional late models I just wasn’t even remotely aware of! I think that’s actually what makes researching Gibson guitars in particular pretty fun. As much as I try to get all the information nailed down, it seems like they always made exceptions, or additional series of one-offs, or a version of a guitar for one particular dealer that has a different neck pickup than normal. While I think that would frustrate some people trying to document this stuff, I find it exciting - and the reason I like your comment! Helps me gets an even clearer picture of what I already spent so much time researching. Cheers! And thanks for the subscribe!

It’s true that the neck itself has a unique profile, but the actual fingerboard of the Gibson SG Modern should have a compound radius as well. I can see that the nut height of the Epiphone is quite a lot more than the Gibson, also the Epiphone nut seems rather flat compared to the neck profile, whereas the Gibson they have carved it to more or less follow the profile of the neck much more closely. Much prefer the thinness of Gibson SG's...especially the super thin profile of the Les Paul SG's where it becomes almost so thin at the body dip that it nearly comes to a point. I'm always suspicious of whether a humbucker has been "Coil Tapped" or "Coil Split". My own Gibson Les Paul Classic owners manual actually says the Pro-Buckers are coil split when after I tested them I as able to confirm, with the simple screw driver test, it was BS and it was in fact coil tapped. They are different sounds, turning an entire coil off(splitting) as opposed to using both coils at roughly 50%(tapping), it makes a difference.

The Gibson is better quality but not four times better. The same applies to most tangible goods - cars for example. However, these recent Epis represent excellent vfm and if you don't want to spend $1000s on a Gibson then they are worth a look. The only caution I would suggest: is Epiphone's QC good and consistent enough? I have an Epi SG Muse and I can honestly say it is the best finished, put together guitar I've ever bought, and I've bought a few. Made in China but made very well and a complete bargain for what you get for your money. Of course the big G will hold value if looked after and maintained for sure, and big value too. the fact that the epi has a dual action truss rod while the gibson has only a single action is a huge deal, i string all my guitars with .09's, my 2018 les paul has a slight back bow to the neck and .09's cant pull it flat, while .10's bring it up just enough. so ya 2 way truss rods are very welcome. gibson will probably never have a 2 way rod, cause...why make it better......

The Epiphone had a number of features that I’d consider upgrades or premium features, but at an obviously lower price. Gibson has a tendency to be a bit stubborn at time for sure, but I have faith Cesar is going to turn it around a bit!

The problem with the cost of high-end guitars is that inevitably you run into the law of diminishing returns. For if 2 guitars are compared, and one is twice the price of the other, it's never twice as good.

An interesting hypothesis. I suppose you could counter-argue that there is also the rule of subjectivity, where one person might assign higher value of something intangible than someone else, for example, maybe to someone American made IS worth 4 times more, or someone’s granddaddy worked at Ibanez, so they’ll always value Ibanez more than Schecter. That’s why these comparisons are fun for me. I’m just laying out the facts of how each is built and which components go into each one, and occasionally I have small opinions about certain things, but I really enjoy reading the comments and seeing what everyone else thinks about it! Thanks for checking it out! 🤘🏽

@@CompanyGrip Sure. The other question that arises is Q: How much is something worth? A: What someone is willing to pay for it. A guitar owned by a famous player often commands a price far higher than its intrinsic worth. That wouldn't interest me at all, as I know that no matter what I do, I can never sound like that player.

Do you think it might be worth to put a Floyd Rose frx on an Epiphone Modern?

That is entirely up to you, to be honest. I’m not much of a trem user, so I can’t really give you a solid answer on that. Thanks for checking out the video!

Welp.....I had the Gibson SG modern in blueberry for a while now .....until I saw this vid .....it may just be the production ...or setting on the amp/reamp ......BUT the Gibson sounded muddy almost compared to the Epi!!!!!!!I have been floored and totally disappointed!!! BUT will say for Fishman Fluence p/us in a epi prophecy model SMOKES both of these!!!!!!!!!!TY sir for helping me avoid spending an extra 2400/500 bucks there.........I NEVER watched one to compare just due to ASSUMING that the far greater price and USA made components and assembly would mean their flagship (or one of them ) sounds no better and for that sake WORSE .......well there are no words besides what I have heard for years.......MOST Gibson's(at least 1500 tone is no better and at times worse than a 600/800 import especially if its a Prophecy loaded with Fishmans!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha. Of course! As with any Gibson product, I should expect the interyear blends. Where there are just some models that mix what was with what is to come! Very cool! Did you get one of the metal shell cases with it too?
