I think I should also point out I noticed the same thing about Coachella being conspicuously Gibson-less before seeing Rhett Shull’s video. It doesn’t mean Gibson is in trouble (there weren’t any Harley Bentons at Coachella either lol). Just something interesting that I thought would be interesting to talk about. Anyways, grading rubric for the gear demos to give a score out of 100? Excellent idea. Scoring 10 categories would help out similar priced guitars into perspective. Maybe consider one category simply as "the 'it' factor."

I dig the idea of ranking, especially the different categories, I say use categories, possibly with numbers, but I think trying to make those into an all encompassing end score is hard, then you will probably have a lot of “how is X guitar a 7 when Y guitar is 10” kinda comments

Instead of a Doug Score, a Hunter Score. DeMuro’s been pretty successful with that approach. I appreciate demos where the KZbinr gives a very specific recommendation (“I’d buy this” or “4 out of 5” etc) rather than just, “yeah, so let me know what you guys think.” Would love to see you implement that.

Do the rubric. I understand your apprehensions, but most of us are wise enough to understand your grading will account for your tastes and use your review as guidance, not an all out endorsement and fully objective take. Scores help us to understand how strongly you feel in a direction. Have objective and subjective categories. Materials, Quality, Value, Variety of Optional Features can be objective enough, Tone, Feel, Aesthetics can be your subjectives.

Fender spends most of its time trying to get guitars into the hands of people (good basic range, modeling amps like the micro which are plug and instant play, fender play to get people to practice) while Gibson spends its time saying, "Hey remember the 60s, 70,s and 80s when we were young and this music was playing? Those were the days. That'll be 3000 bucks please."
@rocktorrocks

If you look at what goes into making a Gibson, set neck, binding, carved flame tops, they’re pretty fairly priced compared to Fenders which are flat out cheaper to manufacture. And you can still grab used Les Paul studio and Tribute models for well under a grand. In fact a brand new USA made SG raven is $1100, yet some Mexican made player strats in limited colors sell for $1050. And this doesn’t even include Epiphones which are making fantastic guitars in the new line up and selling for LESS than what a player series Fender costs despite being similar in quality. This is just people making an excuse to hate on Gibson. If anyone thinks they’re overpriced then don’t buy it. Why even waste energy complaining about it.
@mcshootydotjpeg
@mcshootydotjpeg 2 жыл бұрын
That's also because Fender has a decent "modern" collection. Gibson players buy for the "historic" specs. Sure some Fender players do too, but Fender gives you the choice while Gibson exclusively does modern stuff under Epiphone. If the Prophecy series for example had the exact same specs but was released under the Gibson name it would be a hit among new players if you ask me.
@rocktorrocks
@rocktorrocks 2 жыл бұрын
@@mcshootydotjpeg I wouldn’t mind seeing the Prophecy series in Gibson’s line up. Actually it would be pretty cool but I think I’m in the minority in liking that. I do think separating their lineup into a “modern” and “original” collection was a nice start though. The Les Paul Classic with faster slimmer neck and special wiring options or the Les Paul Modern and the Les Paul Axcess models with the heal carve are a step in the right direction in that regard. So they are at least trying to offer more modern guitars.

@@mcshootydotjpeg Fender is just smarter with their branding and pricing strategy. People don't feel an Epiphone is a Gibson but a MIM Fender is a "real" Fender.
@killroy123

@@mcshootydotjpeg Agree too with this. Fender has its historics but its not obsessed with it on the level Gibson is. Look at Fender on youtube vs Gibson. Fender has does talk about its historic spec'd custom shop versions sometimes but theres so much else happening beyond what they've always done. Lots of Gibson's content is squarely focused on historic players and historic instruments. Its also really easy to actually get a Fender. People can start with a Squier for not too much. When the person is ready, making that jump to the actual name brand Guitar (Fender Player) isn't that hard tbh. You're looking at roughly 850 to make the plunge up to the name brand. Contrast that with an Epiphone vs Gibson. You can find some pretty inexpensive epis but to jump to Gibson is way higher (from 200 to 1200!). An upgrade to a Gibson SG just way too expensive until a few years pass and even then you still wonder if you need to pay that much.

I took the chance to say this on the Shull video the other day, about why Gibson isnt as "popular" anymore (edit - I use "popular" in inverted comments as this is a term I hear people say - they clearly are popular - so I'll spell it out a bit more - that they are not as popular with younger more diverse demographics) - this is exactly the point I've been saying for a long time. Compare to Ibanez especially, but Fender - they have a young (and old) diverse mix of feature and signature artists. Gibson, 3 of the big name releases they are having or had recently (or announced) - Slash (great guitarist, probably not as relevant to young guitarists), Dave Mustaine and Gene Simmons ... I mean are we surprised to see younger bands / new players gravitate more towards the brands that actually market and target them?! If Gibson want to inspire young and up and coming guitarists, they need to relate to them as best they can. Find big instagram and youtube creators that pump content out that would have their product on display (like Ibanez do), do lots of videos promoting their products on their channel with plenty of diverse representation that appeals to everyone. The joke is that they are the boomer brand, but when you compare to what the other companies are doing around them, they are hardly making a move to be caught up with the current 2022 world. Its just so odd to me. But then again its Gibson, so maybe I shouldnt be surprised. edit - I didnt write that out very well - so I do want to be clearer. Are we surprised that we dont see Gibsons on younger more diverse artists? They clearly market more towards an older demographic - some of their new releases are Slash, Mustaine and Simmons - and feature people like Tom Petty. They have a couple of younger artists, but in fairness, while I think Marcus King is a beast of a player, he's hardly this massive super star that is drawing a new dawn on Gibson, he's targetting more towards that country rock Nashville demographic (that is a horrible way of saying it, its late and I am tired, apolagies - hopefully it gets the point across!). Compared to a Fender and Ibanez (they are NOT the only ones, but they are the ones I see the most ads / demos etc for) generally are a bit more young, diverse and target those groups on things like instagram. To me is not surprising - it hasnt been way before cochella and shulls video. My comment was more meant as literally that "are we surprised we dont see it at the young hip concert?!?" not "oh this clearly means Gibson is dying. Again I dont think Gibson is dying, they are clearly fine. Just dont be shocked that people say stuff like this when they announce new signature artists like Mustane or Simmons!!!!

Gibson is not in trouble, its just the same old rhetoric from people who aren't even potential customers. There are many people, myself included, buying multiple Gibsons, new, every year. I looked at the Coachella lineup, never heard of most those artists, they aren't on the radar for Gibsons target market and that's fine, they don't have to be, many others like those artists. Squire is the main marketing ploy of fender; people play squires and get used to playing fender-style guitars, so their go-to upgrade is a fender rather than another brand. Thats quite interesting. I was down in Denmark street a couple of weeks ago testing out a couple of guitars - I am actually getting out of my LP custom - played through a gorgeous Fender Vibrolux, but thats another thing ... But had a very good chat with guy there, and we both were similiar age (late 30s, early 40s) and we were talking about our love for single coils and the Fender designs (I have a hold over from Gibson, prefer shorter scales, so Cyclones and Mustangs for me) - and he was saying he thought people gravitated towards single coils later. Like growing up - when I got into guitar in my very late teens - man the les paul was the one for me. Ironically enough somewhat inspired by the likes of Slash (though I prefer solid colours, so the customs and the gold tops were my thing). Like I said in another comment, I think maybe its cyclical - Gibsons will be cool and trendy again in a few years. Hell maybe a "new" brand takes the spot at the top for a while!
@MrDussek
@MrDussek 2 жыл бұрын
hmm I disagree. I’m 20 and I have an 08 les paul traditional gold top and play all the blues rock to modern trap metal I can. They don’t really promote or motivate newer younger players to playing their brand
@damianhannon1581
@damianhannon1581 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrDussek are you disagreeing with people aging into Gibsons? If so thats an interesting point. There are obviously going to be exceptions that prove the rule - not every gibson owner is a boomer dentist or doctor lol. There are going to be people like yourself that are younger picking up nice Gibsons (after all - they are undeniably great guitars) - then there are also older guys like myself leaving Gibson! But by at large these are probably the exceptions that prove the rule (after all, its all subjective taste). I dont want to keep going on ad nauseum about this - but its plain to see that Gibson doesnt target certain demographics (young and diverse) - just glance at Gibson and Fenders youtube channel and there is a noticable difference - and even more so looking at the artist gallery. I mean again, Gene Simmons is getting a signature bass in 2022 - he was on his way out mainstream pop culture when I was a kid. For me its just a interesting discussion, largely because so many people seemed surprised that Gibson isnt AS popular as they thought it was with younger generations. Like of course they still sell and people are invested in their brand, but you are shocked that 15-25 year olds arent (overall - I am sure there are some that are over the moon) getting excited over Dave Mustaine singature guitar!?

The grading system is kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't kind of thing. As you mentioned, not having it can lead you to repeating yourself and maybe lacks some context for what the baseline is (how good is "good" and how bad is "bad"). But a numbered grading system will bring focus onto itself and many people will get stuck on it rather than what you are saying. I think of game and movie reviews where the reviewer will say things like "It has some issues, but it's super enjoyable and well worth picking up" but the takeaway people will have is "you gave it a 5/10 that means it sucks avoid it like the plague"

I like the idea of a rubric, but I totally understand why it can be hard to quantify certain things that a lot of people think are subjective. Also, ratings can change as technology gets better and the meta changes so it can be hard to keep a rating relevant. Maybe trying to make it interesting in some way? Like, a numeric score but then also a funny segment of what the kind of person who would like the guitar would wear or what kind of food they would like? Makes me think of Revzilla’s scale for difficulty being scaled by beard length (more difficult the job, the longer the beard.) Even if Gibson got more new big artists from the last 20 years to play a Gibson, the total number of these new artists would still be quite small relative to the total number of notable Gibson players (from the 50’s through 90’s) that preceded them as 50 years is a lot more time than 20. Not saying they shouldn’t try to get young new talent in, that’s good for any brand and in the 80’s it was Slash that helped rescue Gibson. All aside that it doesn't even sound all too bad, the fret work wasn't the worst I've seen, was a couple sorta sharp corners on a few I got rid of quick n easy, but as my 1st offset shaped guit I was just so surprised at how comfy it is to hold between the legs in a classical style sitting down anywhere and how accessible the makes the entirety of the neck when it's more vertically aligned with my body. You can play it without a thumb behind the neck all day long it's so close and accessible. Considering it's I think the cheapest thing I've tested to date it's really sooooo much more than worth it for having at the couch to grab quickly n conveniently whenever I wanna play during commercials or play along to a vid or something for fun now that there's a good vid chan like stingray loud in the world finally. It's really great for the price of a toy frankly. I got a strat style guit I grabbed a couple years back with a coil split on the humbucker also I was thinking of swapping the pickups with but I might just grab a push pull pot n just slter whats already there. Hell for what it cost so far maybe just grab a really nice humbucker for it too with a couple singles n just upgrade the whole rig altogether. Artec P.U.'s cover all the bases from budget basic to doing OLP for companies like Duncan. It was a good idea to make these because copies over the years have been mainly junk. There were never a great deal of the originals so they are as rare as a '59 LP. Add to that the original build was pretty good but not better than I expect a HB CMC made guitar. In short the only point in owning an original is for a cool wall hanger.

Might be worth trying something similar to sports stats where even if everything is ranked out of 10, a 9 in category a isn't worth as much as a 9 in category b. Not sure how that would work exactly, but that's why this isn't my job 😂

I think along with the price and artists, Fender simply has more variety than Gibson. If I were to play just Fender, I’d have a huge variety in terms of the styles and sounds I want to get out of them. While Gibsons guitars have incredible tones and quality, it’s a very specific tone nonetheless. I think they need to put out classics like the Firebird VII or Steve Clark’s triple humbucker Les Paul with tremolo without charging up the wazoo for it. As well as experiment more like they did in the early eighties with their P90 Explorer or super strat. But for now while I’d love to one day play a Gibson, I don’t see them ever being my main axes.

Hey dude. I had a request for your grading system. Can you give 2 scores for budget guitars. 1 score that is price range specific and one is a general score against all guitars? I have fallen into the trap of reviewers singing praises about budget guitars only to find myself somewhat disappointed. A realistic expectation would really help!
@Richtone85
@Richtone85 2 жыл бұрын
Depending on what 10 categories he goes with the initial list would give you a realistic expectation as Tuning Stability and rating the clean, crunch, distorted sounds are on there.

@@Richtone85 i 100% agree. This isnt a specific point for this channel. I think hunter does a great job in explaining the pros and cons. But sometimes i just want to know how an instrument competes in its own price range. For example; at roughly the 1000$ range you can get a ltd ec 1000 or a mid tier ibanez. In my opinion the fit and finish of the ec1000 is slightly higher (personal opinion). But i totally get what you mean

I'm a middle aged "boomer" who can afford a Gibson if I want but wouldn't bother. Their QC game is still off and at the prices they charge, it's unacceptable. Nothing to do with who plays what, rather what I'm getting for my money. At that price range, you're damn right I'm looking for high quality. Fender, PRS, MM and smaller brands like Suhr, LSL are all better options in my book.

Fender has exactly the same problems as Gibson. 2 weeks ago I got a brand new "EVH striped series" made in mexico by fender for 899 € unfortunately it is industrially manufactured mass-produced goods of inferior quality at inflated prices. 🤷‍♂️ I'm done with Fender

@@yetimatzenightcat8702 that's the thing though, that guitar may have some QC issues but it's a third of the cost of a Gibson. If you're paying $3k+ the QC better be damn well perfect.

Gonna rant a bit but I think this whole Coachella thing is WAY OVERBLOWN. Plenty of “younger” generations of guitarists including myself love Gibsons, especially blues, hard rock and metal players who like humbuckers. Coachella seems to be predominantly trendy mainstream pop acts anyways, most of their artists (and their fans) barely play guitar or don’t play guitar at all (e.g Billie Eilish). I doubt their fans are interested in buying Fenders or Gibsons and many of the Coachella guitarists are playing indie, a genre where Gibsons aren’t popular to begin with. It’s like going to a country music festival, seeing tons of teles and saying teles have taken over the world and other guitars are out. Broad generalizations on such a small and specific sample size is nonsense. We didn’t see tons of Ibanez or PRS at Coachella either, why single out Gibson. Many younger popular guys in blues and rock like Jared James Nichols do play Gibsons. Also between lower end and second hand Gibsons like the Les Paul tribute and the stellar Epiphones being made now, Les Pauls, SGs and other classic Gibson designs are quite accessible and similar to Fender player series price wise. And many of these “young” artists will prob end up getting Gibsons when they’re older anyways. Offset Fenders are trendy now too but these are all phases which come and go. And Fender is like Toyota, it’s reliable, well known, easily available, and basic. But Gibson, like Mercedes and Porsche is still doing fine. Just caters to a different customer base. My 2 cents.

for the love of god could somebody tell harley benton to make a vintage/modern strat. Traditional strat with flame roasted maple, locking tuners, 22 or 21 XJ stainless steel frets, fret set truss rod, graph tech nut, two point modern tremolo and for the rigth price i would love to see some single width fishman fluence in there. PLEASE HUNTER !!

They are collaborating with an actual player that has their finger on the pulse of the guitar community to create products....as opposed to just sponsoring top KZbinrs to push products that are in stock.
