Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern Karate, played a key role in shaping Tang Soo Do. His Shotokan teachings influenced Korean martial artists like Won Kuk Lee, who later coined the term "Tang Soo Do." Funakoshi’s emphasis on kata, discipline, and philosophy left a lasting impact, bridging the gap between Okinawan Karate and Korean martial arts.
Join us in honoring his legacy and discover how Tang Soo Do bridges the past and present, inspiring future practitioners.

It's important to pronounce Korean words and Japanese words correctly before you claim the upper hand or a position of authority. Recommend you read anything by Udo Moenig about the relationship between Karate and Korea before you discuss it in any manner.

I appreciate your input and am familiar with Udo Moenig’s research on the historical connections between Karate and Korea. His work, including "Taekwondo: From a Martial Art to a Martial Sport," thoroughly explores how early Korean martial arts were heavily influenced by Karate, particularly through the kwans established after Korea’s liberation in 1945. Moenig's analysis challenges nationalist retellings of history and acknowledges that many early Taekwondo pioneers were trained in Shotokan Karate while studying in Japan. The shift away from Karate-based terminology and techniques was a gradual process shaped by politics and cultural identity. As for pronunciation, I always strive to be accurate, but historical understanding is just as important as linguistic precision when discussing martial arts.

@@utsda Great video, some people are just insufferable. "Claim the upper hand..." against who? Anything stating that Korea took anything or was influenced by / from Japan will instantly lead to harsh comments like buddy above.

@@silvergoldpill7985 I really appreciate your comment. My goal here is to educate. Criticism is to be expected when discussing certain topics in the martial arts world. Having been a martial artist since 1974, I've witnessed and heard many things over the years. What's important is to put the truth out there, and hopefully, it will inspire others to do their own research and verify.
