People tend to mix up the part about the 300 lapping water at the river. Gideon was told to choose the lappers, not those that kneeled. God wanted unorthodox troops

As an Atheist I really enjoyed this sermon. I have a genuine Question I hope someone can help me with. Does the bible tell us how Gideon was able to raise a huge army? To me, that seems more impressive than the actual victory in battle. Also, Gideon is described as a great warrior. But does he do any fighting? I don’t mean these questions to be nit picky or clever, I’m just working on a project. Thanks in advance! 🙂
@BellevueMemphis2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question about how Gideon was able to raise such an army. We see over and over in the book of Judges that God raises up a leader and the people flock to him and follow him into battle (or at least support him in some way). There are a few possibilities why. Perhaps the Israelites were not that fond of Baal (they back off pretty quickly after Joash challenges them), maybe they were sick of the oppression of Midian, or God spoke to them internally and they found courage. As for the fighting, God did most of the work in the primary battle, but Gideon was likely involved in some level of fighting during the aftermath when Israel was pursuing the remnant. We are glad you enjoyed this sermon despite not sharing our faith. We hope you will feel encouraged to check out more of our videos and music.

Pastor, about what you say around 13:30. Gideon was already in tribulation for 7 years. Middianites were destroying their food, forcing them to hide in caves and making their life full of stress. 7 years is quite a long time.... I think he had right to miss what God said to him, at least we do not see that God was angry at his reply (like for example in case of Zachariah, who did not believe to angel Gabriel and was punished). It is easy to criticize, but what question would we asked if we were in their shoes? God bless.
@BellevueMemphis3 жыл бұрын
That's a fair point to bring up, Irka. None of us would want to go through seven years of trouble like Gideon's people saw. At the same time, the Israelites were operating on a very long timeline where they experienced persecution and rescue over and over again. God would let their enemies prevail and then He would provide an opportunity for reclaiming the covenant. It's a very human and understandable moment for Gideon to have questions, but we see throughout scripture the importance of keeping the faith and remembering what God has done throughout the ages. Thank you for providing your thoughts!
