Lionsteel is my absolute favourite knife maker at the moment (along with TRC). They produce highly practical knives that have been obviously heavily tested in the field. But for OCD types like myself the fit and finish is just perfect. A few years ago I had a couple of their knives and whilst their knives were perfect in fit and finish, as usual. But one thing always let them down... and that was their edges. They seemed to be all over the place and highly uneven. But no longer. Whoever is now doing their edges knows his stuff. The last 3 I have bought... a B41, an M7 and an m4 all came with edges that were perfect from tip to handle. I cannot recommend lionsteel highly enough. And in terms of actual practical use they are first class. And one of best things of all is the pricing! As soon as I am able to get one the T6 will be my next knife.

I am European and have loved Lionsteel for a long time. It is also the only brand of which I have all the fixed knives and a large part of the folding knives. The M5 is my favorite because it's ultra versatile. The T6 that I bought recently is also very good but suffers from the length/height of the blade and its very enveloping handle at the level of the hilt hinders finer use. The T5 suffers from the same problem. However, they are all exceptional knives with perfect finishes. The M4 is perfect for hunting, the M5 is perfect for bushcraft. The T6 is more of a survival knife. If you like Lionsteel knives like the M5, I can strongly recommend the "Saturn knives" model "Titano" knife, which is also a marvel. (Sorry for my english, it's à Google translation)

The thing that is drawing me towards these lionsteel fix blades is the leather sheath. I feel the black blends well with my urban environment. Not trying to look like Rambo. Interested in the natty micarta 3v. Does the leather sheath have an insert, or just straight up leather?

LionSteel is definitely knocking it out of the park with their fixed blades. I currently have the T5 and a M1. I EDC the M1 in an urban setting. It disappears on your hip and comes with a fantastic leather sheath that retains the knife well.

Sleipner isn't a common steel although Casstrom are using it and a few others but Lionsteel were one of the first. It's a 7-8% chrome tool steel and there isn't much on it but it's apparently Bohler Uddeholms answer to 8amod. It's also used in chipper blades as 8amod is. A very very tough steel in the same ball park as cpm3v. Although 3v should hold an edge longer Sleipner at higher hrc outperforms 3v at lower hardness. As 3v toughness falls off a cliff much over 60hrc so is normally run slightly softer 58-59 hrc. Sleipner with the correct heat treat/higher hrc is an excellent choice!

This will out perform the SRK in most activities because of the higher grind
@B516082 жыл бұрын
I was sneaking around this for some time. The hollow grind put me off at first, but it is actually rather shallow and not a big deal as to stability of the edge. When I got the knife ( G10 grips version ), I thought the ergos are great and the whole thing pretty amazing ( sheath sucks a bit ), but within the first outing I soon found that the grips do not give me any control over the edge. Like a bar of soap almost, rounded everywhere. I sold it pretty soon afterwards and I really prefer somewhat flat or square grips now. Let your hands decide ! With a flat grip and a 6.5 inch blade (just longer, not wider), this would be the KaBar of the 21st !

The T5 has a 'spine' tang. Like a rat-tail tang, but offset to the spine of the blade. The M5 has what appears to be a full tang, but there is a big 'ol hole in the middle of it, just leaving relatively thin ribs of steel on the spine and the belly of the handle. Check out Joe X's destruction test of this knife where the tang construction breaks (under a destructive test). T5 for me.

❤ Lionsteel fixed blades. I EDC an H1 when I leave home and a B40 around my acreage. I really like they way Lionsteel mills their wood handles. Not as durable as Micarta or G10, but I prefer the feel of wood and they just look great. The leather sheaths are nice, but I agree, Kydex especially with a scout carry option would be nice so I wouldn't have to spend extra on a third party sheath. I have nothing but good things to say about Lionsteel knives.

The T6 just hit some stores, and it's in Bohler K490 (basically Vanadis 4E/CPM 4V). And should be a awesome steel for these knives. Hope we see it in more models in the future.
@gideonstactical2 жыл бұрын
Yes I want to see what that one can do
@perry27682 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have done a lot of tests with the T6, for me the k490 is a super sharp steel, very resistant to abrasion and deformation but not on impact it is chipped more easily than a Sleipner. Niolox and Sleipner are excellent steels a little underestimated. Hello from Italy.
@Cid_12 жыл бұрын
@@perry2768 Hmm, that's strange. Thanks for the info. I wonder if they run the steel too soft as Italian companies like to do with some steel?. K490 should be pretty similar if not identical to Vanadis 4 Extra and CPM-4V. As those steels really shine towards 64HRC. That is just my assumption and guess purely based on how they like to treat other steels like M390 etc. Would love to see some hardness test on their K490 to see where it lands. There is a misconception among some of the manufacturers that running steel soft "increases toughness", which can be true with older ingot steels. But isn't really applicable with many of the powder steels. Even taking ZDP-189 as an example, running that at say 60HRC would be completely pointless as it really doesn't start to shine before around 65+HRC.
@perry27682 жыл бұрын
I too was surprised, I don't know maybe it's my specimen that came out like this but I don't think so. The knife is of the highest quality, the cover is indestructible, the micarta is excellent even the sheath which this time is well done compared to the M7. In batoning it is fine, it cuts well even if it has an obtuse angle like all Lionsteel but as soon as you pick a bit of drier wood there always appears some small chips difficult to remove you have to use the diamonds. It looks more like a m390 ... Hi ...
@Cid_12 жыл бұрын
@@perry2768 Yeah. I'm sure they will improve it in future batches. I think they only made about 3000 T6 knives, so I guessing they did that to collect feedback from customers. So hopefully we will see an improved Heat treatment protocol in the future. Did it chip less after sharpening, or was it about the same? And did you try reprofiling and changing the angle, to see if they might have burned the edges during grinding/belt sharpening? They may have rushed a bit to get the knife ready for Blade Show also, who knows. I do love the Lionsteel fixed blades and know the quality they are capable of, so I have faith they will find a solution.

Would love to test the 3V version myself. But I'd also prefer a less expensive version in AUS-8 or AUS-10, maybe at $90. Even N690CO should get pricing below $100 and still offer good performance. Real world HARD use testing by JoeX seems to suggest that AUS-8 just may be the best overall balance of edge holding and toughness for larger field knives. My own limited experience seems to support that as well. No need to spend more especially if there's no real world performance gain imo.

I went with the T5 instead of the M5. The handle really made the difference for me. And the leather sheath is beautiful. 2 christmas s ago i found some Coast knives at the home depot made by Coast products. they have a full tang and come witha nylon sheath. i only paid $10.00 for them.they call it the crew chief.they have a lanyard hole and look a lot like your knives.they have a very hard plastic handle.i consider these knives to be the best deal i have ever gotten in new knives. they have 3cr13 stainless steel blades.and come with a lifetime warranty. i love a bargain at christmas.
