I appreciate you making these videos. I have an upcoming hiking trip all around Pennsylvania and videos like this help remind me on what to carry. I have my usual checklist but it never hurts to get suggestions from others. Thanks again ✌️

I love my MSR dromedary water bladders made of 1,000D nylon codura. Bullet proof. Dropped it in the fire by accident then grabbed it and it was untouched by the fire except a scuff. They make a 2liter, 4liter, 6 and 10liter. And the cap is amazing for it had 3 areas to get water out small to large spouts in the cap. And u can buy a drink hose as well. Best most reliable water bladder I've ever had. Totally dependable 110%. I love my military camelbaks but my MSR is the best.

I bought 2 katadyn be free water filters (95$ cad each)...and to my disappointment, they leaked on our first weekend hiking trip. Good thing we had the Sawyer mini , as backups. 9:23..The Chest pack is a good item, on a dog hike..I love mine, for carrying doggy bags, pet treats etc. . 10:36 LOL 🤣😂 *Sasquatch..lol* 😂🤣 I use to carry the walmart small sprays..they suck...you only get 3 good shots and its done..Your right to get a Large cannister. These small spray bottles will defect and you'll get that junk all over your hands..lol 14:59...That is cool...this is the first time I am seeing these alternative drinking source , from a nalgene bottle..I like this alternative. 😎👍 Thanks for sharing your tips on purchases.

Yea I definitely agree, having a firearm as well as bear spray is the best way to go if the situation calls for it. Speaking of bear spray I think the Frontiersmen from Sabre comes with a second training bottle that’s identical to the actually bear spray so you can practice and get the distance down. Just don’t mix them up and use the training bottle on an actual bear lmao.

Been stuck at home due to injuries for about 3 years healing. Wanting to get back into day hikes, starting small BUT this gives great info on what to look at for carrying if you do go out. We have black bears wander into towns with Pops of 70,000 in AR regularly, good to have some defense. A small first aid kit can be carried in cargo pants pocket. All good advice and recommendations. Thanks for the video. Have a great weekend.

Glad to see there isn't a ridiculous amount of redundancies in this setup. The I'm gonna lose half my s*** aspect of survivalists and Bushcrafters always blows my mind. They don't carry around 2 sets of car keys 2 cell phones or 2 wallets but as soon as they walk Into the Woods it's like the entire narrative changes.
@chriscon84632 жыл бұрын
You’re right about that! I get a kick out of guys that carry 5 lbs of redundant items for EDC at the office or in day-to-day life. In daily life, I certainly don’t need redundancy for stuff I usually don’t use to begin with, or items that can be replaced easily when I go home at 4:30pm

Have you tried to apply that "tourniquet" to one of your arms by yourself? Just food for thought. Cat tourniquet is far superior when it comes to self application which is important when you're out by yourself so often.
@gideonstactical2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have practice putting it on one are. Takes some practice but doable. Agreed cat tourniquets are better, they don’t work well on small kids and dogs. I have both so if I need to choose I will carry the swat for more versatile applications.

Having lived in North Georgia most of my adult life i can honestly say I've known several people who have been victim to crimes. I've only known one person who dealt with a predatory animal. If I can only carry one or the other(weight considerations), I'm going to stick with a firearm. I'm not saying carry in no go zones but, I'm going home at the end of the day period. I try to always carry the tools which enable me to do so.🇺🇸

Very nicely done. How to stuff a lot of things in a small footprint and taking things with multiple uses. One little thing I always have along are fingernail clippers. I have damaged fingernails and toenails to a point where it's hard to trim the damage with the little scissors on SAKS or Leathermans. Also for splinter removal. They can dig down and grip splinters without too much danger to yourself. Of course all the other nipping uses. The second thing is at least two compasses. When all the electronic gizmos fail, you can't see the sun or stars, etc, the compass is king. However, I have seen so many people including myself doubting the accuracy of just one. However, if you can hold two out and they both say the same thing, it's a layer of reassurance that is unbeatable and you can stuff, clip, hang those things everywhere. Cheers.

G'day Aaron, you've done well to slim it down even further mate, yet still having plenty of capability to get out of strife. Like the new rain jacket and gotta say; in my part of the world I wont go anywhere without at least a small tarp and rain trousers too, the ol' poncho being a decent alternative or back up. I did think you'd carry a slightly bigger fixed blade, but hey man if that one works for you. I do use clip lock bags and they're always handy but as you say they can be flimsy and don't necessarily retain shape, so having one of those you showed is a good idea. I'm think'n about a clear one for a map and phone in particular. Anyway, you've certainly done the rounds climate wise over there, I think you'll agree, it sure can make a difference to a load out, even a small day pack. Cheers Duke.

Useful information here! As I get older, I’m feeling the soreness more and I’m interested in going lighter. Particularly for a few hours on a day hike. 8 lbs.+ water and snack sounds reasonable to me. Could probably drop a little more weight (and $$) by sticking with ziplock freezer bags instead of those heavier duty pouches and organizers? Also, would be interesting to experiment with the budget available to put this day hike kit together. You’ve demonstrated some pretty expensive gear here. Could you do it for say 25% or 35% less money, yet maintain reliability and the lightweight load? Thanks for sharing this. God bless and enjoy everyday. - Tennessee Smoky

Genuinely curious as to how realistically effective having bear spray and a firearm is. If a bear charges you, you use the bear spray and it doesn't work, I'm curious how much time you'd actually have to draw and get on target.
@gideonstactical2 жыл бұрын
Thousands of different scenarios obviously of what might happen. I would rather have options than none. Plenty of videos out there as well of people being aware of the Bears presents for minutes at a time while it’s slowly stocks them that will give you plenty of time to pull your bear spray out as well as draw your firearm the only one hand fire bear spray and then you could easily drop the can and go to handed with your firearm if necessary. Also there’s a viral very video out there where a woman bear sprays a grizzly up in Alaska near her cabin. It deterred it from going towards her but did not leave the area and proceeded to destroy her kayak. Look it up. Not every scenario where the bear comes in contact with the bear spray may get it to leave the area. May deterrent for a few minutes but it might come right back. Again so many who’s who’s and who knows what out there that I’d rather have both than only a firearm and only bear spray.

to extend the life of your ziplock bags cover them with tape, clear packing tape if you want it to remain see thru or duct tape if you prefer more heavy duty.

I recommend checking out non-breathable rain jackets because breathable jackets get less waterproof and less durable over time no matter how well you treat them. LightHeart Gear in NC makes one of the best non-breathable jackets on the market, and because they don't require layers of permeable fabric and DWR they're lighter. Frogg Toggs are a popular cheap alternative with AT hikers but they generally are baggy. A lot of Southeast hikers also just use cheap ponchos so you can cover yourself and backpack. I have both a Marmot Precip and Oracle and they leak in the same spots due to abrasion, and applying new DWR doesn't fix that.
