Thanks for putting this video together! My sister and I are planning on doing some day hikes in the mountains and I haven't really been out in the wilderness in probably a decade or more, so this was a great refresher of things to consider in a daypack.

I like that you include a battery pack, I've been a proponent of this for a while now. Anker I've found reliable and they have a bunch of different sizes to suit what you need. I have one small one I take with me just about everywhere, and a larger one for the house to use during extended power outages. That's been a huge help for power loss measured in days, it beats the pants off going out in the cold and sitting in your running vehicle to try and charge a phone so you can stay connected. I know some will scoff and say you don't need anything more than a fire steel and good knife to get out out of any situation and while those skills are great to have there's also wisdom in being with the times when it makes sense. While a phone isn't the most rugged option, in a situation it's a connection to help, potential navigation, and a backup light source if you're really desperate.

Great way to lose your knife. Gravity. It's just a theory. But it is a very consistent theory. Also a great way to not have your knife when you get separated from your pack. But no great loss eh? Why would anyone need a Rambo knife for a day hike? Are you gonna be starring in a war movie while you're out there? I guess that explains the tourniquet and the Quik-clot too. The bears could be laying IED's anywhere along the trail! But then again, if you're gonna go around playing Davy Crockett and chopping at every hapless limb that dares cross your path having a tourniquet might be prudent. Thousands and thousands of people have successfully and safely hiked the entire length of one of (or multiples of) the Triple Crown trails without a sheath knife. Or any knife at all. Leave all that crap at home along with your overblown sense of machismo.

@@brimstone33 yeah I’m a big bushcraft/survival/self reliance guy but I also thoroughly enjoy crushing miles/kilometres and I couldn’t agree more with you. You’re absolutely correct for simply hiking trails, you don’t need a lot of this type of gear. In fact most people will probably enjoy hiking long distances more without most of this stuff on their back less weight and bulk means less strain on the body which means more comfort which in turn means more enjoyment...it’s not rocket science lol most people understand this...it’s simple logic. They are just fixated on playing Rambo and being this lone wolf survivalist guy waiting for SHTF. Believe me, I know I was that guy once, but I learned, and now I pack and dress appropriately for the trip I’m going on weather it’s for the day, or overnight, or multiple days/nights.

I used to carry a Morakniv attached to my pack strap. However, I strapped it with the handle pointing up. It was very handy. I've have replaced the knife with Gransfor Outdoor axe. The axe is small enough to use the cutting edge as a knife because of the light weight ~1lb head. Highly recommend it.

I have memories of some pretty shitty road trips as a kid and a lot of that was down to poor preparedness. Not in a life threatening way but simple stuff like having enough water for the day, adequate clothing for a change in weather, etc all adding up to a stressful time. Well worth compiling and maintaining a kit that will mitigate such scenarios.

Great videos man!! We have very similar taste! I am a huge mystery ranch fan and have been for years now. I started out using their now discontinued "big horn" pack! Awesome pack 50 Liters. Trizip aswell and came with a build in beaver tail or "stick it" which was an awesome feature. But for me besides the brilliant designs and quality what makes them stand out from the rest is the "Futura Harness"! Amazing!! It hugs your back unlike any torso adjustment i have ever tried and extremely comfortable to wear all day long. Easy to adjust once you understand the design. I went from their bighorn to their bridger pack which is made in their phillipine factory. Still very high quality! I then went to using the camelbak trizip. Which was a 37 liter pack collaberation with mystery ranch and camelbak. Awesome little pack!! But no waterproof zippers, that was my only complaint besides size cause it was a little small for multiday trips and a whisker big for day trips but i did use it for both. The coulee's look awesome! 40 liters is nice especially if your gear is dialed in. I'm considering now their Ravine 50. Which is kinda a mix between the trizip and the bridger packs. I really like their komoto dragon pack too! 39 liters-ish but plenty of molle webbing for additional pouches. Room for a stick it too. Super expensive though. If you do not mind camo packs camelbak also just did another collab with mystery ranch in 2019 and redesigned their BFM pack and it too comes with a futura harness and is a 47 Liter pack. Keep it up Mystery Ranch you guys are great!! You guys have something for everyone. Stay safe! Hike on!!

I see no small tarp or rope. Some kind of shelter would be necessary for me. I have a cheap floorless pyramid by Luxe that has four stakes and goes up in a minute or less with a trekking pole or tie it up to a tree. Great to get out of a quick downpour. Also a rain jacket, and some warm layer even in summer at elevation. Just my 2 cents.

That is lot of gear and weight for a day hike. You might use a Swiss Army Knife, maybe a 4 or 5 inch sheath knife, small saw , poncho, small pot, couple of quarts of water, cordage, dry socks, gloves, maybe a Goretex jacket, food/ instant coffee/ tea, compass, fire starter, matches / lighter, 55 Gallon trash bag, head lamp with batteries, map, very basic first aid kit., TP I used to carry this or less that this elk hunting in the snow for weeks and weeks from 8,00 to 10,000 feet in elevation. A lot of this gear was in my pockets or on my belt.

I'm surprised you haven't tried Gransfors Bruks axe. I have both the Outdoor axe & the Hunter's Axe. If I'm a long, overnight hike, I carry the Hunter's axe. For a day trip, I carry the Outdoor Axe. This has replaced my heavy knife. I can do so many things with this small axe, combined with the laplander. I use a leatherman multitool, I forget the model, for my pocket knife. The Outdoor Axe is small enough that you can use it to make spoons, split kindling, use as a knife, and so many other options. As a side note, I still prefer the Scree 32 over the latest Mystery Ranch offerings. With that said, I love your reviews and hope to see more in the future. I would love to see an extended, overnight gear & supply review. As reference, I work as a wildlife biologist for a state agency. There are times where spending the night out in the wild is the only option.

Just depends on how much gear especially camera equipment you’re taking with you. I use this larger pack because I’m a videographer and take multiple gear items with me. If you’re trying to go fast with a light day hike I would look at the mystery ranch Coulee 25. Same design just smaller

I've been looking at the Gerber Strongarm fixed blade, and watched your reviews of it. Curious whats your opinion about the strongarm in 2021? Still worth getting or are there better fixed blades at same price now? Looking for solid fixed blade for hiking/camping/survival (well rounded) . Came across your channel recently and love your reviews.

I actually plan on doing a revisit soon. Still a great bombproof knife, but at $70 there are some other good options out there to consider like the Ka-Bar Turok or Mora Garberg, Ka-Bar BK 18

Thanks for you videos, they are always helpful. I have one "however" which is this: I'm not made of money! I don't have hundreds of dollars to drop on a "day pack". I believe a lot of viewers would benefit from evals on a number of moderately priced packs and bags under the one hundred dollar mark. Just saying. Thanks.

The Rokka knife is 80CrV2. Same steel as used in the Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 , but the Rokka is over twice the price, and comes with that ugly sheath. The Jääkäripuukko comes with a nice leather sheath.
