I've owned this one for about 2 years now....it's the best multi tool I've ever used and I've always had a multitool on my belt. It gets used multiple tomes a day everyday while others got used abfew times a week. Bwell worth the money and I bet you'll love it if you're looking at a new tool!
@hangnwithdosei32667 жыл бұрын
One of the main issues I've found with the Gerber multi-tools is that since the design has the handles almost touching when the pliers are closed, they are very prone to "bite" the hand of the user. When cutting wire you must be very careful about exactly how you are holding it, or else you will end up with a nasty blood blister pinch on the meat of your palm.
@tk4x4313 жыл бұрын
eh i get that issue every now n then with even my Leatherman
@brianfreland90652 жыл бұрын
That's an issue with most tools but I've honestly never been bitten by this one and I've used it every day for the past 2 years. I have big hands and the Gerber doesn't close all the way...it stops with like a 3 inch gap at fully closed with the pliers out. Never had an issue personally. My biggest issue is other ppl asking to use it constantly hahaha
@hangnwithdosei32662 жыл бұрын
@@brianfreland9065, 3 inch gap closed? You are obvious not talking about the same Gerber being discussed in this video. Yes, in recent years Gerber has come out with some multi-tool pliers that no longer use the slide-out pliers design that Gerber pioneered...and instead use the design common to Leatherman & many others. At the time that this video came out, Gerber was still only producing/using the slide-out plier design.

Leatherman does make an adapter extension bit that fits flat faced and allows for hex bits to fit. Yeah, it's something extra that you have to have, but it's not a deal breaker. That said, this Gerber tool is on my wishlist.

Yep. Gerber makes crap tools. The center drive is just a gimmick. You still have an unbalanced handle that you have to spin; so there's really no benefit to have a bit driver that's in the center.

I would have liked to see Gerber make one side of the file a diamond file similar to Leatherman because then it provides the user the ability to sharpen other knives and cutting tools which is handy since a multi tool is more of a supportive tool anyways. And yes, I agree, a bottle opener would have been nice. I also would have preferred a saw instead of the serrated knife. IMHO, if you're going to go serrated, then go full-on serrated and make it a saw! Lol. The user does not gain a tremendous advantage by having a second knife blade (serrated or not). So give the user one knife blade, and a saw for the other tasks.
@Errcyco Жыл бұрын
Having a big diamond file should be a must on any multi tool.

I like my center drive, but i carry it in tandem with a leatherman signal, the signal is an amazing outdoor tool, while the center drive is very good for mechanical and general handyman work. The signal is good because it has a flint, knife sharpener, as well as a tanto sheepfoot knife, and a sawblade for gathering wood to start a fire. Both knives have lifetime warranty which is nice, my signal really shines in the woods, my center drive really shines when im building computers or working on my many mechanical projects. You might say its a bulky set up but i dont have a problem with it. I put my signal before my center drive as ill still usually reach for the signal first. Both are very suitable options for EDC.

Good tool. I think they could capitalize on the screw bit even further by making it a double sided Philips/slotted bit in 1 like Milwaukee’s Fastback. Good stuff overall
@tass84957 жыл бұрын
Missed Opportunity - the tool is bulkier and a bit less sturdy than other multi-tools. That being said the focus and great innovation of this tool is a side from its namesake, the fact that the main tools used most can all be accessed with one hand. This is awesome. The reason I have not moved towards it is the wire cutters are frail and most reviews and customers found this out fast. I am an outdoor dude so I would prefer a saw than a serrated blade, agree with the need for better steel and a can opener. Also Leatherman does have a bit extender to accept hex bits as well. Thank you

I own many multi-tools from Leatherman, Gerber And a very nice Swiss Army as well. This one is pretty kick azz as i like the fact it uses standard bits and you dont have to pay extra. I got this on Amazon when the special deals came around for under $60 bucks. That made it worth the purchase. It is very heavy for sure. I keep it in my camping tools kit.

I have a Leatherman Charge TTi, which has served me well over the last 2 years. I have never had any issues with it and have no complaints about it either, before this in my previous job I had a Leatherman Kick which I was trying to break so i could get a Leatherman Wave, because that´s what all the new guys got, but never managed to break it, I am sure if I took a sledgehammer and bashed on it it would break, but I had to make it look legit like it broke while working, but again I never managed to break it...which it also what really got me into leathermans and earned my trust and respect for them. I actually still have the old leatherman kick at home somewhere. Anyway, I have seen images of this and seen it for sale at a few outdoor shops, is this Gerber really as great as it is made out to be? ...should I get one or just stick with my old trustworthy Leatherman Charge TTI?

When it comes to 'having to buy' leathermans proprietary bits, for a LM surge for example . Just use a magnetic bit holder, grind the bottom down to match the bit holder. Then you can use any hex bits you like! Simple fix and you don't waste your hard earned cash. Plus on fits in the pouch that comes with it.

Leatherman offers a bit-driver extension and although the bits are proprietary they are double ended so double the functionality and compactness. Superb review as always Aaron. This has to be the best MT I've seen in a while, leatherman is really slacking off and not doing anything. I agree with the blade steel upgrade, come on manufacturers slap on at least some D2 steel, won't be that much more expensive and edge retention would be way better. Taking example of the RAT aus8 vs D2 on cut tests the aus8 gets like 58 and D2 goes double that at 120.

Center drive? The Phillips driver on my original Leatherman is centered when open. I used to travel the world, diddling with telecom systems. I've tried lots of fancier multi-tools, but always came back to the first one because of this centered screwdriver. Face it, what's the one tool that you actually use most in your day-to-day life? For most of us it's a Phillips screwdriver. Might as well have that one work as well as possible. Someday I'll tell you how my first Leatherman prevented having my head blown open by an AK-47 and why I then needed a second one - which I still own 16 years later.

Hello, GT. I don't know if you'll see this, but a company (I assume Chinese) called FlyPresent Shop is trying to sell fake/counterfeit Center Drive tools that they claim are "made in THE Germany". Their poorly edited, hilariously bad video for it (which also contains an obvious clip of a Leatherman Wave) on their Facebook page includes footage obviously stolen from your review here, most notably the part where you're cutting wire at 10:31. I reported the Facebook post as "misleading/scam" but I don't know if anything will come of it. Not sure if there's any action you can take, but I thought I'd say something just in case.

@14:13 Just got my BLACK Center-Drive... When re-watching this video I noticed you said the Center-Drive does NOT have a can opener. It does not have a GOOD CAN OPERER, but I just opened a can with the pry-bar/bottle opener. It was a struggle, but it took less then a minute. Now Excuse me: I'M EATEN BEANS! IMHO. Idk. If I’m gonna buy a multitool just for the bit driver, I’ll stick with the sog q4. The ratcheting bit driver on that thing is absolute perfection. It is a little more “light duty” when you compare the pliers and other tools tho

I have 4 Leathermans and I just hate how they have to have their own proprietary bits which if you lose it, you have to spend a whole new Leatherman kit and they are pretty pricey, It's Bullshit really!! But with the Gerber Center Drive, I can spend $20 and get a 60 piece bit kit!! I also love the pry bar, it comes in super handy after taking screws off a cover plate that's been painted over and I can use the pry bar to pry it free. This is the best multitool ever. I have the Leatherman ST 300 and it bends whenever I use force, I'm scared I might break it, but the Center Drive is sturdy and the MP600's are used by the military and I have it as well. Gerber makes THE BEST multitools, PERIOD!!! Leathermans are just too bulky and are needlessly expensive here in Canada. The Surge just feels like a Brick in my pocket!!! Think about it, not only do you have to buy the multitool outright, but you have to spend more money on proprietary bits, bit extender, and if you want to have it clipped on your pocket, well you have to spend more money on a stupid pocket clip!! Seriously, Leatherman will try and make money off you at any turn all you have to do is look!!! Gerber has an equally good warranty, and they won't charge you extra for a stupid pocket clip or proprietary bits!!!

They need to stop with the pointless skeletonizing, ditch the "prybar" for something useful, ditch that serrated blade for some kind of hacksaw, replace the extra bit holder with a removable double-grit diamond coated sharpening steel, and redesign the awl to be more traditional, maybe a put a frickin' hole in it. Trying to put a prybar on a jobsite-type multitool is just dumb. It's just too small to properly leverage anything, and there are already compact (
@HeyLookAZebra7 жыл бұрын
I've had mine for about 5 months and although I think the new features (bit driver, prybar and large knife) are great, the tool to me at least just feels cheap. The plastic lock just bugs me and the fact that you can't really open the tool wide to access the interior tools kinda sucks. What really gets my OCD going is the fact that when the multi tool body is "closed" you can still close the handles about a quarter inch and they pop back open. Just not the tool for me I guess

Great review! I've watched many, many of your reviews and enjoy them often. Based on your review of this tool I purchased the Center Drive. Being a Gerber and Leatherman fan for years and years I was very excited to receive this. Unfortunately, I returned it after a couple weeks worth of use. Everyone has different needs and looks for different tool sets and comfortability. For me, this tool was simply just too large to carry daily. The weight isn't my concern, it's the shape and style that turned me off. The plastic thumb rest was a huge turn off. The rattling made me lose confidence in its ability to be a strong pliers set. The blade, while large, was bland (for me). After very careful consideration I returned it and ordered the Leatherman Surge. I've carried the Charge TTi for years and the Suspension from Gerber years prior to that. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was the option to use any t-shanked blade on the Surge. On a lighter note, I absolutely loved the Center Drive screw driver itself. But in the end, wasn't enough for me to keep it. The Leatherman' s extension bit is not too far behind it, and I usually have my MT opened flat, or in the gun position when driving screws, so the off set is minimal. Thanks again for the reviews. Please keep them coming. BTW, my EDC, all day, every day, regardless of what I'm wearing or where I'm going is the Skeletool CX. Beautiful minimalist EDC.

Zackery Carroll I was putting a lot of torque on the screw driver with no issues. I do agree that if you were just wrenching on it. You might see failures but your medium duty stuff no problem as I said in the video.

Leatherman has a bit extender accessory that lets you use regular hex bits in addition to their proprietary ones

Only thing I hate about the exchangable bit drivers no matter what it is..... that means there's a tool to lose and ul lose a bit damn near every time when u need it for emergencies

I'm not a gerber fan but I do kind of like this one

I like the driver and longer blade but the wire cutters are useless, it lacks a saw, and that pry bar is a complete gimmick (broke the first one, bent the second, and chipped the third). Gerber should also make an outdoor version with the combo main blade, a saw, a file, an awl with the hole, wire cutters that actually work, a line cutter, a can opener, and a chisel
