Watching the precision and teamwork involved in chopping corn silage on a dairy farm is truly impressive! It’s incredible how this vital process supports the entire dairy operation !

Y'all practically give me heart stoppage driving near the edges of that silage pile, especially w/the tricycle-gear tractor. Please stay safe, tractor roll-over accidents happen and their effects on farm families are terrible! Always enjoy your videos!

I love watching the chopper eating up all that corn. I'm finally getting used to the idea of silage piles. On e advantage I see is that there isn't a blower or silo filler pipe to plug.

Brings back memories. 75 76 no blades 2 walls driving over; tractor and wagon only thing packing. Enough feed to supply 125 milking herd plus replacements. Big tractor 1066 hauling with 706 duals after too many years without. State of art parlor. Things change and stay the same. Most diverse industry with everyone doing it right for themselves. I have seen 60 yrs of innovation and statis quo LOVE IT. We never covered pile not available. Our TMR was self-unloading wagon with silage and timed grain on top.

I remember packing an open pit silo with a John Deere 530 tractor. Always enjoyed that. It got kind of scary at times with the pack getting pretty high in the air. You really had to watch and not get the wheel too far over the edge!

My wife and I really like your content, been fans for about 18 months. Your dad's insights about farming are the truth. That said, shouldn't you guys consider buying a bigger silo and stop putting your silage in piles? Seems to be labor intense, not to mention all of the tractors using fuel and the spoilage you get. Or, does the setup of your buildings dictate the silage piles?

We chopped with a 190XT AC and two row Fox chopper. That old Fox was a good chopper, but that 190 XT was a P.O.S!! We put our silage in a pit that was pushed out of a side hill. Worked good. Started and dumped on the high end and pushed towards the open end. You didn't have to worry about tipping your packing tractor.

@MorganOtt-ne1qj3 ай бұрын
How do you balance the ration with a mixed pile of both hay and corn silage? I have put different crops in uprights, but kinda knew about when to expect a change, and have changed crops in bags, but I marked the spot off. A pile has tapered edges, and different levels all the way through. Definitely not a TMR, but it looks confusing.

Why don't you put the loader on the 7405 and just push and pack with it instead of driving over the pile with the wagons and leveling with the blade? Ive done many piles and loader tractor is the way to go
@MorganOtt-ne1qj3 ай бұрын
👍👍 I have done it that way, too.
@Otherrandomguy423 ай бұрын
Yeah depends though spreading out like they can out of chopper boxes the back blade is ok. If your dumping or using a rear unloading box , a front mount delegman blade works the best but loader works well too

Until you have to fix the unloader. I went to bags after waaay to many trips up the chute with a bucket of tools and parts. I even went so far as to convert the "Top" electrical ring to a different brand because of the lack of reliability. That only solved one problem. Even NEW unloaders can be problematic. And when they fail, you only have a pitchfork to feed with. With bags and piles, you can always find a loader! 👍

How come you just don’t silo bag your silage might cost a little more for bagger rental and bag but 2 man job would go a lot quicker and no waste and neater
@dennistembreull27183 ай бұрын
Why not make a ag bag much easier a.nd safer
@Otherrandomguy423 ай бұрын
Easier how?? And ag baggers cost money to rent. Before I retired and sold I built piles that were 10-12 feet high 40-50 feet wide and 200+ feet long we used dump trailers and trucks not forage boxes but piles are way faster than feeding a bagger.
@dennistembreull27183 ай бұрын
@@Otherrandomguy42 ag bags are way easier you don't have to cover it and drag them dam tires. 10 min to put the bag on bagger. The cover for the pile cost money to. You only need one guy to unload instead of four people to pack and unload . They could make bigger loads instead of small loads so they won't get stuck on pile.
@JeffRonsman3 ай бұрын
I just don’t understand why you take the cover off and on , that is why you have mold problems you are letting air to get in the haylage , why don’t you just make a separate pile or bag it
