It amazed me that court would think Evelyn is a suitable guardian for Mary. A snobby rich woman who didn’t acknowledge her grandchild until she showed the same intelligence as her mom. I am surprised that wasn’t mentioned in the court scenes.

Well, we honestly don't know which way the court was going to side, as Frank settled without the court deciding. However, it did look to hinge on Evelyn has health insurance so life must be better! At least from what we see in the movie.

This scene is even more amazing when you know Frank had the upperhand all the time, its just out of respect for his sister's wishes not to show Evelyn that her dream of solving the Millenium problem was completed. Dianne be sending Evelyn "./." from the grave LOL

Such a good scene that should've been in the movie! Everything that should've been said in the court room instead of what happened!

What I love in this movie it is shown quite clearly that the son is just as gifted as his sister was if not more so. He just hated academy and his mother that he "failed" at everything he was "supposed too" on purpose. He is perfectly happy in Florida fixing boats. The mother seems freaking miserable in her nice house and prestigious career. Wonder what would have happened if the mom had been an actual mother to her children.

The audacity for Evelyn to say Frank didn't lose a daughter when he lost a mother from the day he wasn't exceptional, a sister who was & didn't know what else to do, and his niece-turned-daughter who just so happened to be intelligent. Shameful as a mother, grandmother, and a person in general.

Gotta love deleted scenes (that really should have been kept in the movie!) It’s funny how the court always says they are doing what’s in the best interest of the child- obvs every situation is different - but they don’t always ask the child what they want. And as smart as Mary is - which they are telling us by the movie title and Mary constantly being referred to as “Gifted” she should be smart enough to make her own decision about where she wants to live. Also, don’t the birth mother’s wishes come into play? Mary’s mom (presumably) left her/gave her to brother/Uncle Frank so she wouldn’t be raised by Evelyn. Mary said it best in a later scene: [Frank] wanted me before I was smart. She’s 6. She can do college when she’s 12/13, but they should let her be a KID!
@psychohist6 ай бұрын
Being smart and being mature are not the same thing. Why "should" they make her be a kid? She obviously prefers thinking and showing off her talents to being teased and bullied because she's smarter than the other kids.

The mother drove her daughter to suicide and would have done the same to her grand daughter. This was a heart wrenching movie but had a lot of loose ends that was never discussed or brought out in the court scenes.

I guess both of them have part of reason. It was a matter of finding a balance, I guess. Mary lives with her uncle, makes a kid life but at the same time, grandma can guide her to make us of her gift...And Mary can have another motherly figure (considering she is almost orphan). Also, adorable uncle Frank needs time for himself; he is young and he has the right to have their own family, their own kids...
