About the awkward silences, here is my theory: When I watched this myself, I noticed the awkward silences usually happen after somebody fell badly in a way that will tank their score, or if somebody was already on the chopping block in terms of qualifying. I think that SLS production may have told the commentators they were not allowed to say anything bad or with doomer mentality akin to "Oh well this is it she's done" or "alright well this is over for her, rest is for the crowd" in order to gaslight the viewer into thinking things are still interesting or exciting. However, of course there is nothing actually GOOD for them to say about the situation either, so they just kinda end up in silence. Just my theory anyway

Chloe is extremely talented, but has no skateboarding IQ at all. In a competition that claims to be a reflection of real street skateboarding, tricks like fifty fifty big spin out or fifty fifty kickflip out or frontside flip out on a ledge should not get a good score at all. I would understand it if the Chloes and the Ginwoos became olympic gold medalists year after year, but this should never happen in street league. Skateboarding etiquette and good taste should matter, and the style and trick selection of the competitors should display these things.

I’m pretty sure they required one run plus three single tricks last year and years past. That’s a wayyy better scoring format even though the scoring has huge flaws regardless. Nyjah tends to bring monster runs every contest where he’s doing 3-4 more tricks total than anyone else because he can just flow so well. I agree that the runs are more enjoyable to watch too. Feel like they should get 3 run attempts, must use their best single run, then like 4 best tricks, best 2 of those. At the very least they need to require the highest run, or else it’s just a best trick contest and that lacks a lot of variety and skill. The runs become pointless if neither is required in the final score.

Actually met Nyjah at a local park before. Chatted with him for a lil bit and it was just crazy. Turns out his board is enchanted with elvin magic and he’s actually never even jumped in his entire life. I'm 29, gh is about our age as well, it's an ok age to skate, even if you are out of shape I guess to fix that. I started in my early 20s but I don't skate that often and even took some years off. About criticism/ culture, the vibe at skateparks is usually amazing, ppl will cheer for you no matter your level, even a basic ollie if you do it well or over/onto something skaters nearby will compliment ya. It's not a competition and is legit cool/relatable to see someone improve. We are constantly learning something so we know how it is. Atm for tricks I'm learning front side flips, and for grinds I'm trying crook on flatbars.

If you want to see what happens when a scoring system is fully made transparent and rules are put in place about what is worth how many points look at figure skating or diving. Fully devoid of any sort of progression or creative direction for decades. If you tell everyone crooked nollie flips are worth the most points you’re only going to see crooked nollie flips again and again for the rest of time. Keep it mostly opaque and while the judges may have the freedom to fuck up without repercussions at least you’ll continue to see skaters skate to their own strengths and styles and try new things instead of just everyone learning the same perfect meta and being identical robots.
