Another great diagnostic video! I wish more people would watch and learn the art of soldering! I always comment on peoples videos that they need to use more flux. I get bashed to death with people saying flux is ONLY for soldering a component on with! I'm like no! Flux is used to improve the flow of solder, therefore it should be used during removal of components, removal of solder from pads, re-applying of solder, and re-installation of components. In my eyes, if you pick up your iron or your hot air wand, you should have used the flux already!! END OF STORY!

When temperature gets very high, like when some gpus are stacked for mining in a closed tight space, sometimes the fuse can be more sensitive, and blow at a lower amp rating. Its not always a short circuit. They can be sensitive to high temperature. As always, you're a repair god.

yup thats true. If fuse is blowned, need to investigate the cause.. Im not a technician nor have an educational background on electronics, but if comparing to a house, a breaker that went off is to prevent further damage to other system

That's an old card to want to save. The used market is pretty decent for newer GPUs, but to each their own. Nice diagnoses and video as always!

I still have my saggy gigabyte windforce 970 alive and kicking in my spare pc, still holds up for decent 1080p gaming in most cases!
@joshifukyeah Жыл бұрын
@@Adualion Yes very good, but would you pay 200$ or so to get it fixed? It just isnt reasonable for cards that old. Just like OP said.
@x8jason8x Жыл бұрын
I was going to say exactly this. Must have sentimental value or something, there's 0 reason to save an obsolete card that barely does 1080p.

So, for someone less experienced in heat management near parts like caps, would it be worth the extra time/effort to desolder the caps first, and then put them back after the work on the nearby chip is done? And another great vid m8, well done
@juliensimon2000 Жыл бұрын
what about the ram chip? are you sure it was faulty or will you try to solder it back? Could it have heated because of the second faulty chip?
@jenselstner5527 Жыл бұрын
Would like to see you reball a BGA chip.
@silasketgaskets8709 Жыл бұрын
can u also apply focused heat from bottom to remove mosfet?
@robertpage2023 Жыл бұрын
I think graphics cards are very very think. Not sure it would work and you'd have to really heat up that board. Best to use the copper wire method.
@JM-kn9dh Жыл бұрын
Since the mosfet only attaches from one side, no. The board will absorb all the heat
@Willalvers Жыл бұрын
What i do is add some heavy duty Aluminum foil in areas like that :) it does help

It blows my mind that people send these old cards in. I'd imagine he's looking at a couple of hundred bucks for the repair. You can get a newer and better card (used) for around that repair price, or just barely a little bit more.

You are correct, a rtx 3050 or a rx6600 both beat a 980 ti by a large margin. both can be found for about $250

Maybe Alex can possibly answer my question. When working on new motherboards, something you’ve never touched. You find the problem and you remove it but you do not have a parts board. How do you find out the value?

Hi Alex, Very informative video. One question, when you were attempting to remove the mosfet, why didn't you use low melt solder instead of hot air? Thankyou
@The98deville Жыл бұрын
There is solder under the Mosfet, can't apply solder under a component while it's still on the board
