I got a "mixed Samoyed" that turned out to be what I think was a full arctic wolf. He was a beautiful animal but NOTHING like a dog. I thought I could handle any animal until I got Shiloh. They look very similar to a dog but the difference is a dog is like a child you take care of, a wolf, that's like having a roommate. They are much more like adults than a dog is. Dogs stay in a sort of eternal childhood of playfulness and happiness, wolves don't. He wasn't a bad animal, never was violent, but he did whatever he wanted to do and once he had his mind set on getting outside, or doing anything, he'd work ceaselessly on accomplishing that goal. People that think they want to have a wolf have no clue what they are getting into. Fine, if you life in a remote area with 200 acres of land, you might want to attempt it, but only then. I'd strongly recommend against getting a wolf for those that thinking about it. Again they aren't bad animals, but they are nothing like dogs. If you want a very aloof, not very affectionate animal that won't respond to dog training and does whatever it wants to do and will never just be an animal that is happy to see you and wants to play all the time, you might want to try. It's more like an equal than a kid. The wolf never saw me as an authority figure or even a buddy. I was the guy taking care of him and feeding him.

@@timeshark8727 I'm certain it's possible to train just about any animal. I'm just pointing out a wolf is not a dog. The wolf I had, I never felt any affection from. He wasn't a bad animal, he enjoyed being pet, but I never felt he considered me a friend or a buddy. It was cold. I took care of him, but I don't think he really developed any affection for me or even realized he had any dependence on me. I want to be clear I never had any animosity toward him, and I don't think he did with me, but he didn't appear to have any affection for me. Just something I won't do again. I should have taken him straight to a wolf sanctuary instead of adopting him out. People I think have a romantic idea of what it's like to have a wolf. They are expecting some amazing dog, it's NOT a dog. It's an animal you feed and home. He taught me the difference between domesticated and wild. Domestic animals are bred through multiple generations, wolves, they are not. There is certainly a genetic component in domesticated animals, and when you have a wild animal, it's quite apparent. It's like feeding birds in the winter. They are happy they are fed, but they never recognize you as a caregiver.

99.9 % of people don't need any dog with any wolf in them. Majority can't even manage and properly care for a domesticated dog. 5 minute walks up the block and feed thier dogs kibbles, cause thief too lazy to fees them proper feed that consists of meat. A wolf hybrid needs lots of exercise, structured live style, kennel, experience, no small children. Most people can't handle a large powerful working dog breed. So how can one own an animal with high predatory drive that's stubborn and not very owner focussed attention will be any less of a challenge. Don't be foolish. Enjoy these animals from a distance and leave them to those who have the means and facility.

We found out peppers a little bit of a fussy eater when it comes to her food, but will eat any of ours 😂😂😌 However she eats a lot of chicken because thats her fav food however i totally get where you're coming from! I dont understand those type of people! Why even have a dog!

i think people should foster an untrained cattle dog for a week. do that. a dog like that is a high energy dog - one that needs several hours of exercise a day. and a wolf can run 25-30 miles a day and will probably require exercise like that. plus the fact that a wolf is not a dog - it won't have the same personality as a dog you get from the shelter - it won't be your average pet in so many negative ways

He took it to the dog park all the time and it was great with the little dogs and socialize very well, seemed very aware of its size and used great care when playing with the small dogs. He was such a dignified animal but after talking to the guy about how hard it was to keep him happy, I realized that keeping wolves is not something people should do.
@drd19242 жыл бұрын
You nailed it, A Wolf///Wolfdog is not so much of a pet but a companion...Another earthly being you work toward soliciting their cooperation with rather than training them as a pet. This is due to their Superior Intelligence and ability to calculate as well as a much higher level of mental Maturity than any domestic dog achieves. For example: An Adult domestic dogs mental maturity is about equal to a Wolf Pup 6 months old. It's been said an Adult Wolf is more like a 35 year old Human in this aspect. This is what I like about mine. It's less like having a kid you gotta play with and more like having a patient companion you can work with. At the same time, if you throw blows at your best friend he will deck you back just as good. Do the same with a Wolf and they will let you know they are not to be messed with. In other words, they demand respect and don't like to be treated like a child. Doggies love to be treated like a child on the other hand.

A muzzle is not a sign of warning about a dog, it's a sign of a responsible owner. You may not know why (out of many valid reasons) an owner has muzzled the dog. The owner, however, does know. I know someone who muzzles her dog because it picks up stones and eats them, and the vets bills were getting crazy. Just one example you might not have thought of.

I own a upper mid content wolfdog he's Siberian husky Malamute wolf mix and a female German shepherd and and there a charm (yes I've fed them raw meat there whole life and they hunt rabbits and other game for fun) I live in Montana by myself im surrounded by woods and mountains and recently I went to visit my brother for his birthday in California and I took them with me I and I went to the dog park behind my old high school and there was a wolfy looking dog there I asked the owner and said he was a high content and she's visiting from Michigan my wolfdog wasted No time going to him ignoring the rest of the dogs they just sniffed each other and snarled a bit a little scuffle happen and Nothing more but the entire time they never left each others side can anyone explain to me why those two in particular both wolfdogs went straight for one another Im assuming they sensed the wolf in one another
@chezzapie6 жыл бұрын
Julien Franco I would say, absolutely, they sensed each other immediately and their little scuffle was perfectly normal in their working out status.

That is the first thing I noticed. Besides the long snout and the wild looking fur the distinctive paws are what really sets apart a wolf-dog or wolf apart from a typical dog.

have an 18 yr old canadian timber wolf, my kids learned to walk holdinjg his fur, he was and is a house dog, I work from home and hes always with me since days before he opened his eyes! I have a strong hand when training them, patience pays off, some cand be very hard headed and the middle pack dogs and runts are my favorite@! Its my house, my rules, If I was in his den I would learn his pecking order. I train a lot of wolves now from Michigan and Minnesota .. The clients bring or ship by air to my tiny town to the airport. But have to come to my place for 2 days so I can turn them over and can see others Im working with and see where I started and the end result is their dog! But they have to have 12ft fences buried 2 feet in cement and at a min of likefenced areas on their property, before I release a dog to them! Ive had to take back 4 dogs in 12 yrs because the owners couldnt handle their dogs!

MY WOLF-DOGS WERE ALL VERY DIFFERENT. MY YOUNGEST SON’S NANNY WAS AN AUSTRIAN-SHEPHERD THAT WAS SOOO ATTENTIVE TO HIM & HIS OLDER THREE BROTHERS SHE WAS A JOY & A REAL LOSS AT TWELVE AND SIX MONTHS. HER HEAT WAS DOG LIKE, SHE WEIGHED AROUND 105#, & SHE HAD HIP DYSPLASIA. AT THE OTHER END....MY LAST... WAS A MAC KENZIE WOLF-SHEPHERD FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA. SHE WAS A NATURAL TRACKER & WE WENT OUT 59 TIMES! SHE MORE OFTEN USED THE WIND RATHER THAN GROUND TO FIND THE LOST PERSON. SHE VISITED A LOCAL HOSPITAL EVERY THURSDAY EVENING FOR MORE THAN TEN YEARS. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVED 💕 ALL INFANTS, BABIES & CHILDREN. HER CYCLE WAS ANNUAL AND BEGAN AROUND THANKSGIVING. OUR SECOND SON BROUGHT TWO YOUNG WOMEN HOME FROM COLLEGE ONE WEEK END....ONE WAS ON HER PERIOD. OUR WOLF GOT UP INTO HER BED THAT FIRST NIGHT & URINATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BED!!! SHE BIT EVERY STUD WE INTRODUCED...MY WIFE SAID SHE WAS “MARRIED TO ME”. SHE WAS AN ESCAPE ARTIST WHEN SHE WASN’T WORKING!!! SHE DIED AT FOURTEEN IN PEACE...NO HIP PROBLEMS. EVERY DOG AND HYBRID WAS FED DIRECTLY FROM MY MOUTH.....MALES AND FEMALES. NEVER HAD A PROBLEM OF ANY KIND....NONE!

Very informative and interesting video. The part about the reactions of owners is something many people may not really consider. My friend has a full figured we'll say english yellow lab. It obviously does have a deep bark which you would think be expected. But I notice people walking other dogs especially cannot read their own dogs reactions. Let alone what someone else pet is indicating by tone, body language etc.. Many times he cries when people won't bring their pet over or actually cross the street around the house. Yet a very large Husky a few houses down nobody bats an eye at. However what some people think cute talking they do doesn't necessarily = they are friendly.

I had a wild dove attach itself to me. I used to feed the birds on the property. She eventually came into the house and perched herself atop the armoire. I made a nest up there for her. She used to sit on my head for hours, eat from my had, follow me around the house everywhere. She stayed a month with me and finally just integrated herself back into her flock. The last time I held her, I pushed back her feathers a bit on her chest and realized she had a 2 inch hole in chest that had been healing. I had no idea she was injured as she never tended to that area and there was no visible blood, just some feathers missing but not enough to reveal her horrible injury underneath. We named her Dotty. A great name to give a bird with no dots or markings lol.

Incredible, gorgeous animals! I used to dream of having a wolf sanctuary or rescue facility for wolves. I also wanted to raise one and document it for research purposes, and my own pleasure. I am too old to embark on such a project at this point in my life. I have also had too many back surgeries to think of something that requires so much energy and physical work. Have you ever read Farley Mowat's NEVER CRY WOLF? I read it 30 or 40 years ago and was impressed.

A fascinating video! I enjoyed this very much! I have always been curious about owning a wolf dog, however I know that they are quite high-maintenance. Too many people buy wolfdogs because they look "cool" without learning about the breed first, and are unprepared to deal with the "wild side" of the animal. I already have a dog that grew up on the streets, and can still act feral and territorial towards other animals and people. Also, since I live in the countryside, I'd be afraid of people shooting a wolfdog thinking it was a wild wolf :(

We had a wolf dog when I was a little kid in Alaska, my dad trained sled dogs for people and he adopted Ben. Ben was quarter wolf, quarter husky, and half black lab. He was huge with black fur and yellow eyes. He lived in the house and loved our cat and was amazing with little kids. They need to be incredibly well trained though.

Me and my boyfriend have a high content wolfdog by wrong breeding. He was accidentally high content but still a sweetheart. He is very jumpy, licky and a bit bitey. And you really have to go slow with him, to make sure he doesn't freak out or snap/bite you when he doesn't understand what you are trying to do to him or with him. He's a cutie but definitely not for someone who isn't used to this. Hell, even for me it was an adjustment. He's about 70/75% wolf. He's a czechoslovakian wolfdog. These wolfdogs need a lot of love and patience. But if you have the time and put in effort, you will have a lovely (maybe kind of hyper) companion. ❤️❤️

The laws around ownership of one of these beauties are quite different in the US I believe. I think the legal percentage of wolf is significantly less than in the UK. To be able to own a dog with wolf in it, I’m pretty sure the percentage is less than 25%. At least it used to be yrs ago.

Aw! Winston has the personality of my wolfdog. Very sweet, but obviously wolf. She must greet everyone with nibbles on the face. I tried training her to not jump up on people. But then realized it was just wolf behavior. Wolves greet their pack in that way. Now that she's 5 yrs old, she is very delicate when she does that. She also was an escape artist. She would go under, over or through any enclosure. She is absolutely part of our family. Not a pet!! I am her mother, and pack leader. She is very loving, but wild too. I love her with all my heart!! 💖

I grew up with a Hybrid that looked just like this one except he was slightly smaller! His name was Shaft (because he was a bad mother-shut-yo-mouth) and he stayed mostly black for his whole life. He lived outside on our family farm in Tennessee, and he was the most loving animal to anyone he considered family or a member of his pack. He was an amazing protector, especially for me and my twin brother. I think we were around 8 or 9 when we rescued him, and even when he was very young he would try and protect us like we were his puppies. We had 3 seperate family houses spaced out on the farm and he would always wait outside the door of whatever house we were at to walk us safely to the next house, especially in the dark. I'll admit that he could look pretty scary, but I always felt so much safer with him around. I wouldn't recommend hybrids if you don't have a large plot of land for them, but they can be such great animals if you know how and are willing to care for them properly. Shaft lived until he was around 18, and he did his very best to safely walk and protect our family's little ones until the very end.
