I heard of GIL EVANS before but was not expecting this when a friend gave me the cd. Now my eyes have been opened to Gil and am looking forward to further adventures with him. Thanks again to you tube and other posters for exciting a crotchety old man. I love Dave on sax and others. GBG NO EDITS.

when i heard the news this morning of my hero's death, this was my first thought, played it loud at 3:08 and my wife understood. one of music's original giants. i remember coming up on alto in the early 80s and EVERYBODY on alto wanted to sound like Dave, even to the point of doing his unique head tilt, all in vain. I and everybody else had to accept that there's only one Dave Sanborn. and damn what a timeless performance!

There used to be a jazz cafe in a corner of Dogenzaka in Shibuya, Tokyo. The loud volume was enough to shake the coffee spoon. I came across this white jacket there. PRIESTESS

Amazing how a recording like this has been laying for 5-6 years before it is released. Still - it is missing on Spotify and other platforms, but is here. I had it on Vinyl, but this wil work for now 🙂

Musique inoubliable.

Stellar track! The ability to sustain interest and excitement over an almost 20 min playing time is remarkable. Thank you so much for posting.I haven’t heard this since I got rid of my vinyl years ago. As been noted before,the other music apps don’t have this in their catalogue.

Same here with the vinyl. Been on the lookout for a reasonably rice cd version for years. Amazing piece of music.

Absolutely amazing performance - Ha ha Lou quotes 'I Love You' at 8'22 - sounds so out since he ends on a major 3 in minor. Love him and this chart. Energy is through the roof. Genius!

I can’t get enough of the opening and the break into the main theme of “priestess” with the whole orchestra and the really great solos. Just a little note my favourite to date is “NOJO” the neufeld occhipinti jazz orchestra a Canadian big band. They have a few titles all of which are good. GBG NO EDITS.

Can you recommend other good albums like this?
@NavyLeaguer4 жыл бұрын
@@konradfitzgerald Thanks! Begin with tracks 2 & 3 from the same 1977 session. Then you might try the Live at Sweet Basil's sessions. I prefer the second disc over the first.

I’d love to know how carefully this was arranged. Did Gil write the rhythm parts for everyone? Sometimes it sounds like it, other times not so much. The breakdown for the second saxophone solo is so tasteful and restrained, I wonder how detailed the orchestration was.
