I was first introduced to Gil-Scott Heron in 1972 with his album Pieces of a Man. His talent through his music enabled him to convey the feelings of the people at the time through his lyrics. This song is a perfect example of bringing the awareness of whats happening in our world and the unpleasant consequences of these transitions. He was absolutly correct about America becoming a consumer based economy bringing with it unemployment, confusion and a sense of hopelessness that we were no longer in control of our world. This song came out in 1981 which was a period in our history where we were in a recesion so severe it almost resembled a depression with inflation seemingly out of control and interest rates escalating to meteroic levels.. His observations in many respects are as relevant today as they were 4 decades ago.. As a poet he not only reflected the views of his people but reminded us of the inequities that exist in our world and the importance of breaking down the barriers that separate us as people rather than bringing us together. His artistry as a musician and a poet as well as his conribution to music as a foundind father of rap music will be sorely missed.

Doesn't really add anything to Gil's original at all. The power of that early 1980s recording resides in the way he builds the critique of consumerist/capitalist America under Reagan through a brilliantly incisive rap, getting more & more intense until it gives way to the chorus 'This ain't really...' which just overpowers you right to the end of the track. The edit here is just too tricksy and polite for its own good, essentially depoliticising the original. Gil would be turning in his grave, while 'Lac's Give Em Hell''s mix disappears into the rave. Come on mate, get some politics into what you're doing and do justice to the great Scott-Heron.

Music isn't really about politics. Music is about notes, chords, rhythms and textures.
