Yes indeed, PhrAntione. Spittin the rellalties of one our many struggles of comin up in the ghetto, but without glorifying the drugs and other destructive factors which work against our people. This is the true results of it. And as far as hip- hop goes, Dolemite was rappin. Hip-hop was born out of funk. That is why early hip-hop always sampled funk to make their beats. Funk is hip-hop. Rap is just funk speeded up. I used tell these youngstas, Superfly was gangsta rap!!!
@morbidlyboreddr.strangelov34203 жыл бұрын
@Ryan Harren No not white, you must be stupid. Gil Scott was both a lyricist and a musician. Where modern rap and hip hop are strictly lyricist, the beats are not made by them, it's their sound engineers. Gil Scott WAS his own engineer, He was a musician with lots of understanding of jazz, funk, blues and soul. Played guitar, piano and flute (and God knows what else). I like rap as much as the next guy, but calling this "rap before rap" is like calling an orchestra, a hoe-down because they both use violin/fiddle.

+amirracurls101 That is the truth, Amirra (I take it your name means "teacher"?) Where are the Curtis Mayfields, James Browns, Watts Prophets, Gil Scott-Herons, etc. of this generation? There are none, and if there are, they're buried so far underground they will never get mainstream airplay. Message music frightens people.

Spent 1968 with Gil at LINCOLN U. In rural Pennsyvania . Was not a good fit for him and he moved on .He was very generous with his time and helped us all gr0w . You can get real feel for the times from RED BULL interview with Brian Jackson . We all hung out in theater building which had language labs at one end. Gil was true poet. Brian was the music . But by time I graduated in 1971 Gil had first album out . The rest was HIStory. Love "angel Dust".

The bass and how it goes with the beat is just too sexy. His poetic style of singing is just amazing!

Ironic that the two black recording artists who spent their lifetimes preaching about the dangers of drugs, GSH and James Brown, both got hooked late in life. A cautionary legacy.

Absolutely ahead of his time, but then the greatest ones are always so. Our world is so messed up right now his music can still calm the soul to listen to these messages.

Lol when this song first hit the radio I was a kid and it scared me! All I could think about was that story he was telling was a cryptic warning, too bad more people back then didn't take heed before they started dusting...but now hearing this again as an adult, I can appreciate not just the message, but the beautiful arrangement and sound.

Loved this song for it kept me straight ... When folks talked about much fun getting high was I always Heard in my head "Down Some Dead End Streets There Ain't No Turning Back" Looking around today, it was way ahead of it's time

I seen folks on groove theory talking about throw backs, but the young people soon will not know of the true old school, the stories of the ghettos, poverty and real life, but I’m glad some folks can only grasp the main stream because it leaves those of us with deep music connection search and find the gems that were left behind by true legends 🤟🏽 good music never dies it lives in us

My father traveled for his job, and because I loved poetry my mother sent him on a mission to find the Black bookstores in each city he visited. After one trip he came home with an album called"Small Talk At 125th And Lenox: A Black Poet Speaks" GSH's first album, with classics on it like, "Whitey On The Moon," and "Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul," which introduced me to the concept of reparations when I was 11 years old. Been a HUGE FAN ever since. I got to know and perform with a member of The Midnight Band!!!

Gil Scott Herron cannot be done justice today, he is gone.. never to return. I feel even more strongly today that history will eventually recognize that we lost a Giant in 2011.
