Back in the day after I came back from the Nam thing and I hid in the bottle for decades trying not to face my demons this mans music was comforting to me. Today I am sober because I surrrendered my will over to my God of the Universe. After all that is said and done Gil Scott-Heron should be inducted in the hall of fame for being a pioneer of rap music. RIP brother.

Taken from Live at the Bottom Line New York 1977, its a longer track than this, about 17 min longer. In fact that live recording is a great document of the Midnight Band in full flow.

Vous me manquez.

So many memories and thoughts of my youth listening to this song. I have studied Gil’s works for 48 years. It all started when I start playing chess and my uncle would pick me up on weekends to; play chess. Not only did I learn about Gil, I learned about Miles, Monk, Nina, Sarah, Coltrane and so many others. The Bottle and Johannesburg caught my attention. WHUR and WPFW played some of his music. Winter In America along with the other two was often played on those stations. “Everybody Need Something” GSH
