So this song was written for Clair Mills, the 3yo daughter of Gordon Mills, O’Sullivan’s producer for whom O’Sullivan would sometimes babysit. Sadly, producer Mills disputed song rights to “Clair”, and this plus matters relating to his producing of O’Sullivan led to a lawsuit - which Mills lost entirely. Meaning Mills lost quite a bit of money over it. So despite the song having been written with the best of intentions, things were not always so rosy with its later circumstances. Still, once Clair Mills was an adult, she apparently did not hold the unpleasantness against O’Sullivan and came, publicly, to at least one of his concerts where he acknowledged her to the audience. A gorgeous song. I remember it from the early ‘70s and then the famous legal case plus all the nasty gossip surrounding it. In the end though, I think it was written with the best of intentions and expressed great affinity for a human just starting out, entirely appropriately.

I enjoyed this song so much when I was a wee lad. I completely forgot about it, but from the first notes of his beautiful voice it all came back to me. And now pushing 60 I love it even more. I just happened upon it, and instantly remembered it, and remembered enjoying it so much. Gilbert O'Sullivan was and is an amazing artist. Between him and Paul McCartney I am wondering whether the gifts of rhyme, melody, and lyrics align best among the Irish. This is a song that captures how a man--be he father or uncle--falls in love with a little girl, and can't help but indulge her, because she is so cute, and is pure joy in his eyes and heart, and he feels so alive, as if his whole world now is doting on this little girl.

@@renatanovotna9175, you're not only grossly wrong, you are willfully wrong. There are intelligent people who from an early age understand human psyche, and there are those who live in a torpor. Please try to pierce the fog you experience to see what is really there. This song is about that fatherly love that seems awakens for a little child. If you call that inappropriate, so condemn motherhood the same way--hence I call that stupor a torpor.

This is a lovely innocent song! It's probably the only time the word "murder" makes me laugh, and the sound of a child laughing makes me tear up. It's possibly the loveliest sound in the world.

I loved this song, I was10 at the time but I understood. My mom had died of cancer and my much older brother had just gotten married and were expecting there first baby. His wife had been married before and had 2 kids, the youngest, an adorable 1 year old with big blue eyes stole my heart. I guess I needed something to fill that void in my heart, Mom had just passed months before. This song made me feel a little weepy and i hung on every word. So many songs of that period early 70s were heartbreakers or maybe just to me some were. Ive always had to have music in my life to be happy ever since❤

This song always makes me smile, because I can hear voice of a girl laughing the last part of this song. Gilbert O' Sullivan was inspired the girl who was a child of his producer, and he created this song? I see. Soothing, beautiful melody. He is the true melodist. Thank you for uploading ! いい曲だな、声もいい。alone againと違った印象を受ける、というか歌詞の内容が明るい。

Gilbert O’Sullivan is so underrated - this song of his my favorite - Alone Again Naturally is special also. I can’t believe 265 thumbs down, they must be tone deaf. Don’t read anything into the “ I don’t care what people say you’re more than a child “ - Just accept this as a beautiful song about God’s most precious gift - A Young Child. And like many have stated, Please bring back music like this - Most “ So called “ music since 1990 doesn’t compare to anything before 1990.

No need to ignore the meaning of the song. He wrote it about babysitting his friend's 3 year old daughter. It's a wonderful song. Too bad that friend was his manager who was involved with his label struggles.

Yeah, it’s a lovely innocent song obviously. The people who read into it have certain tendencies that they should have sorted out by a psychiatrist.
