How do You remove gold leaf from unwanted areas and achieving a crisp line?

what should be the temperature of warm water? and does it have to be distilled water? or regular tap water

Hi. I use distilled water, first soak the gelatine (use just enough cold water to cover the gelatine in a jug). Takes about about 10 mins until it is floppy. Then heat the rest of the water until almost boiling and add to the soaked gelatine mixture. let it cool to room temperature, stir well then off you go! Hope this helps.

Good day. How do you protect the back of the gold as if it were on a glass door or window?

messy shop videos I don't! The gold is sandwiched between 2 sheets of glass and framed.

Hi there. Do you apply any adhesive to areas where you want the gold leaf to stick? How do you keep from removing areas you want to keep?

Hi Vincent. The adhesive is the small gelatine square dissolved on water. I apply the leaf more or less where I want it and remove back to the desired area. It is very very fragile and can be rubbed away with a finger, cloth or cocktail stick. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas!

Got it, thank you! I've actually done some research and found some rabbit skin glue to create another type of size and have tested it so we'll see how that goes. Do you have any advice on burnishing the leaf? I appreciate all of your help so far!

I only water gild on glass which doesn't really need burnishing, just a gentle 'polish' more like a wipe. I do oil gild on glass but that doesn't need it either. Are you working in wood/gesso/bole? I don't have any experience of that sorry. Good luck with the rabbit skin! And happy new year to you.

I see. I am working on glass, but perhaps my rabbit skin glue size mixture was incorrect as the gold leaf actually looks tarnished. I still have to patch it with another layer, though, I don't think I did it correctly, unfortunately. I also think I may have flowed too much size onto the glass because I tried to have it flow through to rid of the wrinkles but as it dried, it didn't end up with the mirror finish I wanted to achieve.
