Single-handedly the most useful video on gilding for me thus far. I was failing miserably, trying to save money using imitation gold. Turns out i was doing nothing wrong. Imitation will never behave like real gold. Buying 6K made all the difference. Thank you.

There are lots of video on this channel showing different gilding techniques etc. I'm currently filming for some online gilding courses which will show everything including what can go wrong and how to put it right or avoid in the first place. Hopefully these will be out in the summer.

Thank you so much for these wonderful videos! I just started trying to learn different techniques of creating a gold surface and your videos are fantastic! I still don't understand how any gilding system works, but it's getting clearer every time I watch a video. Thanks again!

Just come across your channel and it's far and away (in my humble opinion) the best real gilding channel. I am more interested in the theory, at the moment, but am beginning to think I may take the leap to the practice. Coincidentally I was just looking at the Instacoll system yesterday and wondering whether that may be a good starter system. A question, if I may. Do you have any links to suppliers of either small classical plaster moldings or the molds themselves, for practice pieces? Subscribed.

Utterly brilliant ! I've gilded a mirror frame using Dutch Gilt sheets (copper) which need to be sealed on completion to prevent oxidisation. But I've concluded from your excellent video where I was going wrong - really it was a case of applying wrong technique and preparation from start to finish. I have also learned to keep pets away when gilding - my darling curious cat had gilded paw pads from stepping into my discarded shards of gilt.

I'm not sure I will ever do anything larger than fish hooks for display tying, but I might as well try to learn what I can especially this Winter. You are a very good instructor Ruth. I instruct people in fly tying and fly fishing, I know how difficult it is to feel confident about what you are doing. You are very well suited to instruct others, I am happy to have found you.

I am just starting to get into gilding and your content is hands down the best I’ve found! Really a great teacher and most importantly you always explain the “why” aspect of processes, instead of just falling back on “cuz it’s unquestioned tradition” kinda vibe I’ve much more often come across. I’m in the States and just looked up the 6kt leaf from the site you provided, lowest price they have is $40 for a patent book of 25 leaves ($42 for “loose leaf”, not sure which is better but can prob find out thru your awesome video resources!), if you or anyone more experienced reads this - does this price seem high to you? The current exchange rate would put it at ~£33 in the UK All the best!

Hi, 😊 thanks glad you're enjoying the videos. Wow thats high!! Sorry don't think it was that high when I put the link up. I've just bought some for a job with the postage it worked out around £12 per book. I know gold leaf supplies ships around the world. You could see if it's cheaper that way.

Burnishing is all down to the bole as long as you have 8 ish layer of bole you will get a good burnish. The leaf doesn't matter, you can even burnish water gilded metal leaf.

Yes it will tarnish. I didn't seal it as I won't to see the comparison with the burnishing to the next wing video. Then I'm just going to leave it to see how long it takes to tarnish.

@@MKWHD I buy my gold at gold leaf supplies. In the discription for every leaf type it's tells you if it will tarnish and what you can seal it with. So a good supplier should have that info in the discription. www.goldleafsupplies.co.uk/gold-metal-leaf/gold/gold-leaf-books/gold-leaf-loose/

This is so helpful. Thank you so much for all your great videos. I especially like the idea of working with the more affordable silver gold leaf to get the feel of the real thing. Please could you explain the "a pinch of 12-1 rabbit skin glue" that one adds to the gilding laquer? Is it just a pinch of the glue nuggets that you add into the water and alcohol? Thanks much! "
@RuthTappinGilder
@RuthTappinGilder Жыл бұрын
Make up some rabbit skin glue, ratio 12 water 1 glue once you have melted and cooled it, it will be a jelly that is what you take a pinch of. About the size of your thumb nail.

When it's dry, that depends on how warm it is. In the summer I can burnish after an hour or two. In the winter it can be next day. Best results within 24h of gilding.

Metal leaf is so much thicker. Its nothing like how real gold leaf acts. If you learn to work with gold leaf, then metal leaf is easy. But the other way around doesn't go so well.
