I've never seen this video before ! But the Mr Universe album was one of the first albums I ever bought, and I still like it. This title track was the one that really made me fall in love with the much-missed Bernie Torme's incredible guitar sound, and I later started seeking out his various solo and other band projects. Such a great player, and lovely guy. Incidentally the much earlier pre-Deep Purple song Mr Universe by Episode Six (which featured Ian Gillan & Roger Glover) is great too, but very different to this. It does feature a few of the same lyrics such as "bubble in your beer", and it may have been the first track to feature Ian's trademark scream ! Shame that this clip cuts out before the end of the song, as it ends with some vocal gymnastics / pained yelps by Ian !

Gillan were a class act and this is a class song from a class album. Didn't realise they did a promo vid for this track. Trust their old record company Acrobat Records to go bust just as they were hitting the big time with the Mr Universe album. It would have no doubt went to the top instead of dissappearing out the charts. Cheers for posting.

Saw Gillan twice, Mr. Universe & Glory Road, later met Bernie with John along with Robin Guy on drums at a local charity gig. Think Bernie might have recognised I was from the Gillan era, I was surrounded by kids & was the only one with a bald head. Even John noticed! anyway the gig was great with GMT tracks & afterwards I shook Bernies hand & he handed me a plectrum. Great memories of great times, Bernie r.i.p.

If you look at Ian 's catalog, there will be hardly any singer in the rock arena who can match him...It's just some of his work never became as popular and therefore has become obscure...but anyone who makes the effort to check him out is guaranteed a great time on all his work... provided they are willing to be challenged and like his voice...His is among rocks greatest....

Well, my memory must be going - just saw your post about when Gillan had the surgery. Maybe the "bosses" gave him a break and let him heal! They were pretty demanding. And, yes, I agree that he sounded good in the late 80s. Heard him in a live KZbin performance (don't remember which song) in 1990, and he sounded just great - screams and all.
@Lil194313 жыл бұрын
I realize Accidentally on Purpose was recorded in 1988 when Gillan's voice was still good. At some point he had inflamed, infected tonsils removed - along with the nodules, that supposedly improved his voice - anybody know when? German doctor found this in '80s, I think. His voice still gives me chills - and other feelings!

After hearing Ian's solo stuff...for the first time; it's much harder than the Purple stuff so I can see why the Sabbath collaboration would've been appealing to Gillan. However, you can really hear the impact Ian's solo stuff had on the Purple Perfect Strangers album because it had a harder, darker tinge to it like his solo stuff did.
@slycordinator9 жыл бұрын
I've read an interview where he's said he wasn't entirely keen on the Sabbath thing and that he'd told other Purple members to hurry up with a reunion if they wanted it because otherwise he'd take the Sabbath gig (which he obviously did).

@@IMajst3RI Yeah, but Born Again was a monstrous collection of modern for the times metal songs. Unfortunately Geezer did an equally horrible job mixing the album, which sounds like Geezer playing on the surface of a lake with rest of band playing directly under him submerged entirely.

Believe me, outside of Ian they all know what happened and were left with quite a bitter taste. Bernie was the first to go as he was like, "We're filling up good-sized venues and we're broke? Ian said he got screwed before so it was his turn to cash in. Business in the music business...many suffered even though they were stars the money never got to them...just the life and the life after. great memories though. I saw pretty much this line up of Gillan in a small nightclub in Birkenhead (the Hamilton Club) in 1979. I'd never seen such a big band in such a small venue and we were literally just a couple of feet from the band and there was no stage. A few years earlier I'd seen Purple with Tommy Bolin at Leicester Granby Halls and I would have struggled to see them then with binoculars. Excellent gig - they played a selection of Deep Purple classics (inc. Smoke on the Water & Child in Time) but also fresh new Gillan band compositions and I also heard Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell over the club PA for the first time. Before the gig, all the Gillan band stood at the bar (blocking it, but I didn't mind) and they looked like giants, especially John McCoy who was a big fellow. I think the drummer then may have been Pete Barnacle, who was replaced later that year by Mick Underwood, but apart from that the line up was the same as here.
