Hey Ken, super comparison video. I've actually used the Skinguard, it's not close but for a quick irritation free shave it's fine. Also I think that it's pretty ironic that Gillette and their mutliblade cartridges have been the main cause of ingrown hairs and irritation for men's shaving is now releasing a solution to the problem in terms of this skinguard. Gotta love Gillette selling both the problem and the solution.
@bobjones8321 Жыл бұрын
No, Gillette is selling the skinguard for those individuals that are retarded and don’t know how to use a multi blade razor causing them to get ingrown hairs and skin irritation.
@opinionator38844 жыл бұрын
The Skinguard is pretty specific in its appeal - cartridge shavers that get bumps, irritation, and ingrown hairs. The separation in the blades eliminates the lifting of the hair and then cut below the surface that you get with today's multi-blade cartridges. I introduced my son to it as he was using Harry's and had a ton of bumps and it really cleared them up. His face looks a lot better. He did not want to try DE shaving in the frat house at school. Perhaps I can introduce him to DE shaving this summer while he is home.

I’m a head shaver and I use a double edge safety razor for the first three passes and run a German steel double blade cartridge razor for pickups and around the ears and whatnot. I got lucky a while back and found my Dad's 79 Atra aluminum handle like you have. Then I went on ebay and bought another Atra razor that was the same vintage as my Dad's but it came with the complete case, new Atra cartridges and the blank shipping cartridge. The handle was broken though, it was badly corroded where the handle meets the head of the razor. So I tossed the razor and used the case for my Dads. I also have a newer 90's Aluminum handle Atra with the rubber grip over mold. That one was brand new in the packaging, picked it up locally for $15 and also found another Atra like my Dad's complete and practically new with the case and all for $20. The Atra is a great shaver for sure. But my Dad actually loved the Sensor Excel more. He skipped the entire Mach 3/Turbo era and all the Fusion variants because the Sensor Excel worked so well for him. He actually wore his Sensor Excel handle out so much that all the coating and rubber grips wore off handle lol. He's older now so he uses a Panasonic Arc4 to shave with. But recently he saw me using his Atra razor and wanted to try his Sensor Excel again. But unfortunately blades aren't easy to come by for some reason and yet Atra Plus blades can still be found locally by me lol. So he instead bought a Mach 3 and sofar he likes it. But still prefers the older Sensor Excel.

Great shave and video Ken. The Gillette Skinguard is a comfortable razor but it struggles to remove tough hair. I'm pretty much guaranteed a 3 pass shave when ever I use it while with a DE or straight razor, I can sometimes get away with less passes. Gillette's current and past cartridge system will never even come close to the economics of a straight razor or a DE safety razor. It's that simple.

Great shave. Paying for a cartridge razor dirt cheap and buying expensive refills is like buy a video game console at a high price and buying games for cheap. It's always like that because it's a business model companies adopt to gain profit. I've been trying out electric shavers so now I rarely use cartridges. But look on the bright side; I haven't gotten one single cut or razor burn from electric shavers so that's good. It's only a matter of time before I start DE shaving. Have a great day

Head Shaver (20 plus years) here. For my face it's always a DE or single edge razor, but for my head it's the Atra or Trac II all the way. If you're going to use a cartridge for head shaves, reach for the vintage ones. They do an excellent job, carts are inexpensive, and there are so many razor handles to collect and use. I help my dad shave his head, cartridge razors don’t give him any irritation but they sure are expensive. I use one of my de blades for a first pass to remove the bulk of it with the grain and then a second pass with a cartridge razor against the grain, it extends the life of the cartridge. I found it hard to go against the grain with the de but maybe I’ll try it with a sharper blade sometime.

Atra and Atra-compatible cartridge razors were my go-to daily shave until I grew my beard out about 10 years ago. I went clean-shaven due to the coronavirus because I needed to wear a mask for work. Couldn't find any Atras near me; the closest things to them were super-cheap two-blade disposables. Tried a DE for a while (the Feather Popular) but could never get my beard down smooth enough unless I made three or four passes. I've considered the Skinguard but I couldn't justify the price. I think I might have to try to find some new-old-stock Atra/Trac II cartridges or any of the third-party bulk packs you see on eBay.

Great Video My Brother!!! When I shave my head (I am not shaving it at the moment) I use a Gillette Vector w/Persona blades (I think they're Persona Blades, got 100 them off of eBay on the cheap) and they work very well. It is very quick and blood-free. I have done the head shave with a DE but the risk of cutting myself rises exponentially BC my neurological disease cause me some troubles w/ weak/shaking hands and weak shoulder muscles, so I need to shave my head in as short a time as possible to prevent having too much pain afterwards and the DE shave just requires more time and a steady hand to do. I will even use my Vector on those days when I just need a quick face shave and I am feeling under the weather. I am always kicking myself for throwing out my original ATRA Razor from when I was a kid and just starting to shave but back then I got sucked into buying those multi blade (3 OR 4 then 5 blade) razors and I just threw it away one day. The ATRA is/was a better quality razor than the Vector. It is built with better materials in my opinion. Shave On My Brother!!!

Thanks for the video, Ken, and congratulations to the "Another Engineer in the Family" (and this comes from an engineer))! As for the cartridge razors - like you said - they do have their place and make sense for some people. But I'd say that at some point (after Trac 2, Atra, Sensor, etc. - the exact point is difficult to define) it just became a gimmick. You stop getting any real improvement and start to pay through the nose for all the marketing BS. Personally, I don't find all the Fusions/Skinguards any easier to use (or gentler to the skin) than any other cartridge/disposable razor I've tried. Just more expensive and more awkward to use (around the nose, etc.). On the plus side - the "open back" design makes them less prone to plugging. Still, the DE wins on that.

He has done. Scroll back through his history. Briefly though you need the following. x 1 Toothbrush. x 1 Bar of Dettol Antibacterial Soap. x 1 bowl of White Vinegar. x 1 bottle of BARBICIDE. Soak in White vinegar for hours, then rinse under tap water. Use Dettol Antibac' soap to smother it and toothbrush+soap to get the nooks and cranny's. Rinse of. That should realistically be enough however then use correct amounts of Barbicide/Water ratio as per the instructions and leave them in Barbicide for 10-15 minutes and rinse under lukewarm water. Done.

Great video, Ken. I liked the comparison shave. I prefer DE razors, I haven't used a cartridge razor since 2013. I have a heavy beard, and cartridge razors tend to clog on me. But, I have a friend who loves the vintage Gillette Atra. I'm not a shaving snob, and it's all about finding your perfect shave. What works for me might not work for someone else. I think you should shave with whatever works for you. Cheers to all of the shavers!

great comparison though. how about a demo on disposable razors. You have a lot of shaving soaps, but here in India shaving soaps are considered as a luxury item. Its too pricey.

Cannon are best printers HP I use to end up throwing out and buying a new one when I needed cartridges but the cheap Cannon I bought is still going strong after 6 years and cartridges last a while and are quite reasonably priced

Hmmm...they've rebranded the Godrej ("Goad-rej") shaving cream under the Cinthol name. I hadn't seen that. A lot has changed since I wetshaved. I used to love Godrej cream. Combining it with Cinthol may mean they'll start bringing it out with other scents (like Musk, for example, or Cinthol Original). Interesting.

cartridge razors are the most comfortable and easy to use razors, with a very quick learning curve; but too expensive on the long term

Another great informative comparison video. Leaving all that soap behind and having to press kind of hard just to get the cartridge to cut the hair plus cartridge price is the reason I won't be buying it. What's next a video shaving with the new $200 heated Gillette razor?

Great comparison, Ken. I use a cart now and then, but I don't use any new ones, only vintage. I use my Atra, Mach 3 or Sensor Excel. Like you said, when I'm in a real hurry, I'll grab one of those.

That green brush handle looks awesome. Almost reminds me of antifreeze a lil bit. Lol. I like that Atra handle too. Is it plastic? Also, pretty cool you are gonna have another brush out. 😁👍🏼

Nice and important video. I shave my head, and mostly use DE (all sorts of razors and blades); BUT admit that cartridges are way faster and maybe give you a closer shave (they have to be Gillette---all others give me scalp pain-- I think they PULL). That Atra was my first razor and I may even have the handle at my moms (if not in the trash--so it's good to know you can still get the refills). I got the SkinGuard when it came out and then saw the refills for $25 @ W....n's and haven't even used them.....just disposables.... 3 blades for hard to get places or when I have NO time. Well I am going to guess: all these ChiCom brushes, etc gonna be 25% more soon......... . Barbasol to the rescue........haha

Great video as usual ... I don't chat about shaving with guys so this takes the place. This channel has a nice person in front of the camera and the people that post are pretty nice as well. BTW shaving my head/face in the shower with a DE for a bit and not so much of a problem but your mileage may very. My Parker Shavette not so much ... my brain is not wired to do my head (in the shower or mirror) with that though I can shave my face pretty well. Have a great day everyone!

No reason not to use a DE or SE on the head. Works fine.
