Gillian was not the 1 denying it, she said on the Jay Leno show that he lived with her in London, you will have to go and find the video of it, they definitely had a real relationship going on at one time

To put it a different way, I think, ironically (given the mulder/scully trust thing) they just don't trust each other somehow. Each thinks the other can destroy or really hurt them so they just stay in their corner of the ring, refusing to go at it. they also know they'd be pursued doggedly (another irony) if they actually dated. Everyone would be up in it.

I wonder why it's not gonna happen... I mean there's understanding and attraction between them, so why not? Is it him who's dating somebody else and she knows it? Is it her who thinks it wouldn't end well? Or is she officially single but secretly dating a woman at the moment? Other? I'd be interested in your thoughts, especially if you are a fan since the 90's as I am. I've always thought that the reason why they didn't get along in the 90s (besides the stress of doing 20-24 epidodes each season, which would likely kill the best friendship..) is because there was some flirt between them at some point in the early years which ended badly so they couldn't get along anymore (or, they rubbed each other the wrong way because there was an attraction which was never openly awknowledged). Am I the only one who wondered about this?

+lizbennetgenova well, about the tension, I heard there was an unequal pay problem and Gillian was more than unhappy. IDK what David opinion on that issue but he might not support her. And if you watch their latest Jimmy Kimmel interview, Gillian answered vaguely it was about her hair being so difficult on set and David had to wait and she said it ADDED problems which she didn't say what. About the it's not gonna happen comment, I think they might have tried it or talked about it and it was proven a disaster. Or you know, when you are so close with someone and you know them too well that you still love them no matter what, you just know you don't want them to be your lover. Or like you said, when the question was asked, either her or him was in a relationship that we dont know about. It's a wild guess because those are the only thing I could think of when two people already admit attractions and not hiding their love for each other and seems so fit, but they say it's not gonna happen. I'm just glad that they are still an amazing friend with each other and we can see the chemistry, the electricity, the love and all she bang. I'd like to know other fans opinions too if they know something else.

+takewhataway thanks I didn't know about the unequal pay problem.. I've watched that interview today and it was clear she was still (after all these years…) basically avoiding the question, which is one of the reasons which had me wondering…I mean, I guess there were many factors, but I do think some were 'personal' and not just work-related. I'm being curious as well, I hope other people care to share their opinions with us :-)

I'm a fan regardless but that's jmo. also about unequal pay..not sure about back in the day but for the revival they offered her half of what they offered DD. which is bs because there's no show unless both sign on. DD supported her and thought it was bs too I believe.

+lizbennetgenova This is all assumption from what i can tell back staring in 1997/1998 he became self obsessed and wasn't there for Gillian and said a bunch of hurtful things which strained there "friendship". When things were all said and done and he decided to leave the show in 2000. That was the lowest point of there relationship. You can read it on Gillian's face in Season 8 and most of 9. It wasn't until 2006 when David and Gillian reached out to one another when Gillian was facing her worst demons. I assume that they started to repair there relationship because they were very friendly and happy in 2008 but Duchovny's demons finally caught up to him in turn Gillian was there for him just like he was there for her in 2006.

It did not happen because Jillian Anderson was no match for Tea Leoni. JA looks much hotter now than X-File days but TL has always been hot.
