The American accent is not fake. She subconsciously speaks with two accents. When she's around British people, she speaks in a British accent, and when she's around Americans she speaks in American accent. It's something that's very common with multi-lingual speakers too.

I think Gillian is one of those rare artists who is a bit quirky (nuts) but that nuttiness leads to brillaint performances like the one in Bleakhouse. I was floored by that performance so if talking in different accents and taking on different personalities makes it work for her, I hope she keeps it up. Daniel Day Lewis stays in character for his entire movies and he's brilliant

It also depends on who you spend most of your time around. If your Portuguese neighbors spend a LOT of time only with their family and other Portuguese people, they're not going to switch accents so easily. It also depends on where they learned the language from - if they learned English in a Portuguese school with a Portuguese teacher (as opposed to an American school with an American teacher) its going to have a different accent.

@bphutchins its her natural accent. she moved to england when she was 2 and so its the way she learned to talk. she adapted to an american accent when she moved back to the USA in high school and was bullied because of her brittish accent.

What I mean is, people's accents are more than likely influenced if they can speak multiple languages. For example, an Italian American's accent has attributes of Italian accent when they speak, just go around NJ or even Brooklyn. And they most likely subconsciously speak in a deeper accent around their familia, than with their colleagues or friends.

I appreciate the point, but many Irish people can speak Irish (Gaelic) as well as English (North and South). But I think Norton has adopted his accent for the media and makes his origins not easily recognisable. I think his accent was stronger in Father Ted.

But for the last 20 years she's lived in London, and as she said, and this is something that other dialectal people will confirm, her accent alternates automatically. The ear triggers the voice. Fluent bilingual and multilingual speakers don't have to think about translating what they're hearing. They immediately understand, and automatically and unconsciously code switch. vengeance. You see I too am bidialectal. Therefore I know with certainty that Gillian is not affecting or faking her accent switches. She speaks a rather more precise variant of English RP, but that's only because she's a trained thespian. Clear diction is part of her training, but she didn't have to learn have to learn her English accent, she had to, as a young girl, learn her Midwestern accent. Once learned, and with her working in The States, she employed that accent. But with her return to London, she naturally reverted to her first accent, her English accent, because she was surrounded by RP English speaking folk. Hugh Laurie had to learn an American accent and Renée Zellweger had to learn an English accent, but Gillian, before she started earing a living as an actor already had both accents at her disposal at the drop of a hat.

It's not one she "puts on," a lot of people's accents shift depending on who they are talking to. I have a basic Northeastern American accent, but if I am with my friends from the Midwest or my family from the South, I start to subconsciously adopt their accent.

It IS that "puts on". Nobody has a pronounced "posh" London accent and then after flying to New York 24 hours later has a totally American accent. People do pick up aspects of an accent but NOT fully transform accents like she does. If you believe her nonsense is real than you are not that bright and very gullible!

I've been witnessing it over the past 5 years with an older lady who is originally from Ireland (she's probably 50-something?) that shops in the store I work in. She now has a 100% American accent, and when she first started shopping there she had a very thick Irish brogue.
