Excellent video. Our Brome 1024 Plus is couple years old now and has proven itself over and over. Our only problem thus far is how tight is "too tight" on the wing nut. We had initial problems keeping the "cardinal ring" on so we tightened the wing nut a little more and then some more. But then under the constant assault of squirrels this year, the threads on the plastic shaft were actually stripped and the unit fell apart.

Yes, woodpeckers and cardinals use this feeder! There is a yellow stripe on the main body and a matching yellow stripe on the base. Yes the base only goes on one way. Line up the two yellow stripes and slide the base on. No more twisting to match the two parts. Also, once the base is removed you should remove the center spindle in the base by pushing it lightly to one side. That allows you to get to very bottom of the feeder. If your feeder is old like mine you can feel some grit or grain powder buildup. This buildup will absorb moisture, swell and help to prevent the seeds from dropping. I live in Central Florida where moisture and blowing rain get into the feeders. I have had seeds sprouting from the openings. It was almost impossible to clean until I watched this video. It was very impossible to clean the clear tube. The spring mechanism was in the way. Now, All four of my Squirrel Busters are like new. This video saved them. I had already put them in the recycling bin. Thank you! Thank you!!!

A few hints would be helpful as to how many turns + and - are needed , I tried once 360o clock-wise and it had little effect on increasing resistance to gravity ( a heavier bird or several small ones at a time). To test ones result one always has to reassemble the whole thing.but great product.
@gilligallou
@gilligallou 4 жыл бұрын
Arthur Treichler morning, be happy to help, you have the squirrel buster plus? The adjustment is at the top just inside the seed tube you’ll notice marking of 3 yellow lines in side a small clear tube there is a red marker. As you increase and or decrease the tension the red marker moves up (less weight to close) or down (more weight to close) .My suggest is to start with the red marker on the middle yellow line and gradually adjust up or down as needed, let me know if that helps? Thank you, Bob.

Hi Bob, thanks for your instructive video. I've had the squirrel buster for some time and have been reasonably happy with it up to now. My problem is the spring mechanism doesn't seem to be doing the job. I've fully cleaned and reassembled the buster several times and adjusted the spring BUT it doesn't keep the larger birds off no matter how I adjust the spring. What do I do? Thanks, David
@gilligallou

David Rusch, hi David, how's the adjustment , where is the red stopper in relation to the three yellow lines at the top of the spring column??
@ttocsmij
@ttocsmij 4 жыл бұрын
For future reference, if the red adjustment nut is on or past the upper yellow line (see manual¹, Section 4. Adjusting for Selective Feeding) perhaps the spring needs to be replaced. Call Brome and see what they suggest. One has to keep in mind that this also affects the effectiveness of keeping the squirrels / chipmunks out as well. In the meantime, I am curious to see if / how Mr. Rusch solved his problem. _______________ ¹ bromebirdcare.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/1024-P04-1_brochure_DMDec13_2018.pdf

Somehow I always lose the wing nut. Maybe if there was a big box that came with the feeder to put the wing nut in while doing the routine maintenance people like me would not lose the wing nut. The big box would be hard to lose. Or, put about 5 more spare wing nuts inside the see-thru window. When the feed supply got down low enough and I could see the spare wing nuts it would remind to perform the maintenance. And another thing I do is forget to replenish the seed supply on time. I have squirrels and birds come tap on my window to remind me to do that. Maybe if the feeder came equipped with a loud alarm that could be activated by the feed reaching a certain level there would be a loud alarm sounding to let us know the feed was running low. Another thing that I would like to see added is directions on how to put the feed into the feeder. My neighbor has one of these feeders and he places his feeder on his patio and throws the feed at the feeder. That works good if you can throw straight but I can't and I always end up with more feed on my patio than I get in the feeder. Just my 2-cents worth. Hope these suggestions might lead to a new, improved feeder in the future. That's all for now. I'm going to look for those wings nuts.

Haha, seriously thought it’s not normally a problem, how ever we will take the suggestion, for filling we have several seed scoops that work well for filling the plus, I believe it’s n our website at www.gilligalloubird.com they have a large scoop end and a small pouring end , let me know and I can send you a picture of one. 👍👍👍 Thanks ,

Nice video. My squirrel buster plus only allows about 1/2 the feed hole to be exposed. Is there an adjustment that allows the hole to be completely open or is my spring worn out?
@gilligallou
@gilligallou 2 жыл бұрын
Yes open the lid as if you’re filling it with seed, there is a clear plastic tube on the inside, turn it toward the plus side , making the red stopper go lower. This put more pressure on the spring, outside of that depending on the age of your SB the spring May be getting weak, you can check with bromebirdcare.com for parts. 👌👍😎

I love the potential of this feeder especially since we have lots of squirrels. Thank you for the cleaning instructions. A big problem I am trying to solve is how to keep the bird seeds from cascading out. When birds visit the feeder, the seeds start to free flow out of the ports. Within 20 minutes, all the bird seed is on the ground. I checked the feeder. All the parts are where they are supposed to be. I scooped up the seeds from the ground and refilled the feeder. The same thing happened again after chickadees and cardinals visited the feeder. All the seeds ended up on the ground again. Is there a remedy?

Hi there , thank you. That definitely shouldn’t be happening. What type of seed are you putting in? If you’re able to send me picture and or a small video to gilligalloubird@gmail.com of your feeder and the internal parts I may be able to visualize the problem? Thanks , Bob

Thank you! I am using a better seed mix this year. Wallis Johns Black oil sunflower seeds, sunflower chips, safflower seeds. It attracts the Cardinals and chickadees. Unfortunately, as the birds started feeding, seeds cascaded out of the feeder. I will refill it and hang it again so I can record what happens.

Morning, you can put all part in if you wish, not crazy hot, 3/4 of max I would say, but a good scrub in the sink with hot water and some light soap. Go easy on the detergent, it can leaf an Oder on the polycarbonate plastic, it is very hard and dense to resist that but alway on the safe side. I never use bleach and if I do it’s a very very light amount. Enjoy and thank you, Bob

Hi, Bob. This is just great. I have two squirrel busters, an old and a new. I took them both apart, washed, and put the old one back together no problem. On the new, something is keeping the tube from going all the way down into the thing with the perches. I know it has to fit a certain way, and it starts to click into that groove, but it stops just a bit in, and absolutely won't move beyond that place. I tried a little WD40 around the rim. but that really isn't where it's catching. Something on the inside. Any ideas? Thanks! Julia

@gilligallou 6 жыл бұрын
Julia Gagne hmm?? You should match the colours up (yellow) both on the bottom and the tube part. There should be a visual in the instructions as well, I would try a 1/2 turn, line up the colours and snap it into place. Hope it helps, let me know if still have trouble, we can connect again and get it fixed up for you. Thanks , Bob

Bob, I have watched your video repeatedly, and another guy's who took it apart into even more parts than you did. On his the tube just drops/slides so easily into the bottom part, and in yours too it looks as though nothing could get in the way. Lining up the yellow lines and turning 1/2 inch does START the process, but something is stopping the tube section from going further down into the bottom part so that the feed holes line up. There is NOTHING that I can see that could actually be stopping it, so I have no idea what is going on. When I engage it as far as it can go, the white thing that takes the wing nut is about a half inch above being able to stick out. The tube will NOT move, and then it is difficult to yank it apart too. :-( Julia

Do you have the squirrel buster plus , remove the search ring and shorten the search rods and lock in place with the nut on the very bottom of the feeder. After that remove the feed for a week or two, then slowly add it back in later in the day, remove again until late in the day again, replete this for many days . No food available all day everyday, till 3,4pm , remove at dark and repeat

Remove the nut from the bottom. , remove the bottom, then release the tube by depressing the two little tabs , one on each side, near the bottom, about 2inches up. They can be a bit difficult to depress and release the tube. There are yellow line on all the parts for re aligning. Thanks , Bob

Do you mean removing the lid to fill the feeder? Remember to press down slightly before attempting to turn the lid, then 1/4 turn and its off, same to put it on. If you look there are small groves the lid slides into, I’m sure you will find it easier as you go, let me know if I can help further, 👌👌😊 , Bob

There is no way to clean the tube in the dishwasher so the inside gets clean. No standard dishwasher is large enough to hold the tube so you can only lay it horizontally which of course doesn't clean the most important part - the INSIDE.

Bob., I ended up washing the tube as best I could in the dishwasher, and then used a microfiber cloth and some dishwashing detergent to clean the inside tube. One thing that I'm concerned about thought is the feed tube on the gray feeder I have has cloudy (was that way before the dishwasher), whereas the GREEN feeder tube is completely clear like it was when I bought it. Don't understand unless they changed the type of material at some point. Any thoughts?

This doesn't help me . THE SMALLEST Squirrel Buster Bird Feeder does not have an removable bottom and cannot get the bottom off. I've tried a bottle brush, toothbrush, etc. and cannot get the mold off the very bottom rim (an inch up from the bottom. Nothing is reaching it. I'm talking about the smallest one that does not offer the bottom coming off. (It's bolted on with no way to removed the bottom.) I don't have a dish washer.
