Robert D. was devoted to his craft. His great stunt work was extended into the role of the robot. That costume was never designed for comfort, but just for looks. It had to be a chore just to get into it and out of it, walk in it with any sense of normality, and perform in it. All with limited sight, proper ventilation, and who knows what was in that black makeup he had to wear. Then on top of all that, walking into that cold lagoon water most likely without any protection against seepage inside the costume! So many behind the scenes stories that we as viewers are never told or we never really think about in general. All lost in time. Thankfully this channel does its best to tell the tales in an honest and respectful way. Thanks again Rick for your devotion to your craft! You serve us well. 🙏

Me and my son used to watch Gilligan's Island and I Dream of Jeanie every day when he got home from school, hes 34 now, when he was stationed at White Sands Missle Range, New Mexico when he was Active Duty US Army i sent him the complete series of both to remind him of our days together when he was younger. He's an Iraq Afghanistan Veteran now and a Federal Agent, still serving his country just in a different organization. We still watch Gilligan's Island and I Dream of Jeanie together and he watches them with his stepdaughter and plans to introduce his grandson to them when he's old enough, right now my great grandson is only 3 months old

Rick Nineg, I'm surprised you didn't mention the name of the episode was an homage to another classic TV comedy starring Julie Newmar and Bob Cummings. If not for Rhoda Miller, "Gilligan's Living Doll" would have been so ridiculous a title, it wouldn't have even been conceived. Robots with human characteristics was such a ubiquitous fantasy, you would think that by now we would have made more progress in making it a reality. A roomba is nothing like Rosie (The Jetsons). Maybe there is too much fear and opposition to that; and maybe there should be. BTW, very good video.

"The Skipper lost his marbles!" That line made me laugh out loud. I remember when he posted on the Gilligan's Island fans Facebook page that when walked into the lagoon, it was icy cold and wished he could have used a wetsuit. Also, one memorable line, which I was surprised about, got past the censors was when Ginger told the Robot that she wanted the Robot to "get her off."

Thank you for this video. I always loved that episode and had been wondering recently who it was in the robot costume. As an actor myself, I can attest to the occasional need to black out the eyes or face of a masked performer. I spent 12 years playing the character of Darth Vader for Lucasfilm and the Lucas companies for film, TV, games, commercials, print, and live appearances. (Google me. LOL) The Vader mask has special tinting so that the actor's eyes are not visible, but for certain shots such as stunt scenes or lightsaber duels that tinting is removed for safety reasons. (It's not the easiest mask to see out of.) In those situations my eyes would be covered with black makeup, making me look sort of like a racoon. Again, thanks for this video. Gilligan's Island was one of my favorite shows growing up. A few years ago I got to visit the CBS Raleigh Studios where the show was shot. It was so depressing to find that Gilligan's lagoon had long since been filled in, paved over, and an office building constructed on the part of the lot. Still, just knowing I was standing where television history was made was a blessing.

I kinda remember this episode, but I remember that show’s ending where the robot walks into the lagoon and then onto Hawaii….. The gang started singing the Aloha song! But in typical Gilligan’s island fashion, they hear over the radio that the robot did indeed make it to Hawaii, but instead of telling the authorities where they were the ‘bot rambled on incoherently and didn’t make any sense….
