Thanks for showing something that is rarely appreciated by the general public. The amount of work and testing the S&T department has to do just to change 4 wig Wags. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye as we see here. In signalling attention to detail is very important hence the amount of time taken to test every part of the circuits worked on.

I wished me old man was still around as he was fond of Gillingham signal box when he was working relief out of there, I seem to remember this crossing was gated but was an early recipient of the automatic arms as it was hard work for the signalman to run down, open gates, close gates etc due to the busyness of the lines there and I seem to remember there was a box boy tasked for that singular energetic job because gates and the opening of interfered with tea, the drinking of. He often had to wander down and un-padlock the Navy branch to let stuff in and out and he would be cursing the inclement weather and sailors alike. I've still too got a chunk of flight deck off of HMS Triumph when they cut her down prior to scrapping in Chatham, I was there with my uncle who was on HMS Warspite and it was like a boys dreams come true, getting a bit of a famous ship AND a guided tour of a nuclear sub with my eyes all agog and everyone very nice too :)

Interesting, but I can't help thinking it'd be less disruptive and cheaper to wait for a halogen lamp module to fail and then replace it with an LED module rather than lifting the whole backboard out.
@warweezil28024 жыл бұрын
It’s not as simple as you think. The new unit is assembled and tested in the factory, it is type approved and construction is very closely specified, the most efficient way is to change the whole thing, back board included for an already assembled and tested unit, and Once erected it requires thorough testing to ensure it functions correctly. Working on anything associated with the signalling system (as crossing signals are) requires a closure to rail traffic. The upgrade is not as simple as just plugging in a new fitting. Railway work such as this upgrade has to be done safely and correctly, and isn’t possible to be done with trains running and road traffic passing through an area where lifting etc is being performed. Where rail is involved it is dangerous to cut corners to save time or inconvenience, the greatest inconvenience is to be killed if a system fails because it wasn’t installed correctly.

A very intresting video indeed. I just wonder is this a wig wag without the akoustic signal alarm? And is the signalbox next to the level crossing still in use? In that case the level crossing is controlled from there I guess. Here in the Netherlands manually controlled levelcrossing are very rare. Most of them are automatically acitvated by the passing trains. On "my" local line from Maastricht to Heerlen via Valkenburg (well known also in the UK by its Christmas markets in the caves) was controlled by local signalboxes with mechanical semaphores until 1986. Than came the light signals and automatic level crossings. And the train traffic controlcenter in Maastricht that controls all trainmovements in the whole province of Limburg.

@JTCrossingsUK6 жыл бұрын
Wow that was very interesting, wish i could catch something like that, why were there no trains running on that day?
@morthren6 жыл бұрын
Joe Thorpe - There were engineering works going on all day. They removed that walkway around the outside of the signal box, along at the station they were working on a new footbridge. Further along past the station they were working on the tracks and points. Plus the wigwag upgrade. It was a busy day!
@JTCrossingsUK6 жыл бұрын
morthren I didn’t realise that they used cranes to lift the wigwags, plus I didn’t realise it took so long to do it in general, very interesting the way they program the lights, for a min I thought it had a broken red light. Apparently they are upgrading Aylesford Station crossing this week. Are you going to try and catch that?
@morthren6 жыл бұрын
Joe Thorpe I didnt know how they lifted them either, it was really interesting to watch the whole process. They had to change a card in the controller for the LED lights to work. I think Aylesford is being done at night so a video wouldn't look very good.
@JTCrossingsUK6 жыл бұрын
morthren Well you’ve solved my problem of wondering how they upgrade crossing lights, they usually have super bright LED flood lights shinning on the crossing when they do work at night so you should still get a great shot of it. Do you know anything about Woodnesborough road, Chillham road and Mill, etc? (As to when they are being upgraded?)
@morthren6 жыл бұрын
I'll see if I can get down to Aylesford and take a look. I haven't got any information on the upgrade dates of other crossings unfortunately. Gillingham is quite local to me and I knew there was work going on that Sunday so went down to take a look. This is the video I managed to get.
@K-o-R6 жыл бұрын
Do they really need a "red man" light as well? Doesn't say much for the residents of Gillingham. And it doesn't even flash in time with the main red lights, aaahhhhhh. Never liked those gates that don't have the springy "foot" at the end. Seems like more bending force on the gate than necessary.

pretty much because of the alternate light which also used on emergency vehicles
@davecook38402 ай бұрын
It goes back to Semaphore Flags, the Wig Wag flags where opposites of each other and where shown one after the other. This then led to the technology of lights flashing left and right like these on a Railway Crossing and in emergency vehicles where the headlights flash left them right. The control box is called a Wig Wag…
