At some point towards the end of your time in Gilman, you hit this pace that feels like traditional home video I might find in someone's VHS collection. With your mom and dad on this trip, this video felt extra sweet.

Just discovered this Gilman Illinois least used video. As a born and bred mid-westerner is it most satisfying. There is a hook that immediately came to my mind which is that you kind of recapitulated the trip that Steve Goodman took that lead to the song "City of New Orleans". He had just married and he and his new wife took the train from Chicago down to Mattoon (a couple stops past Gilman) so he could be introduced to her grandmother. On the way back his wife fell asleep and by the time they got to Chicago he had the tune and two verses of the song. I guess this ride can be inspiring, in a flat mid-western sort of a way. Thanks for the good work on least used stations.

As someone who lives along this line -- Further information is submitted: 1. It's not double deckers every day, but it IS always at least 7 cars. Canadian National requires a minimum 8 car lengths for the defect detectors to activate. 2. Gilman and Rantoul [the next stop south] are flag stops -- you have to remind the conductor that you want to get off, and you have to flag down the train to get on. Unsure if there are any more flag stops on this route [or on the "Saluki", which is the morning train]. 3. The "City of New Orleans" used to stop here; I cannot recall when that ended.

One year I took them to Chicago by train to see a horse race at Arlington Park. They enjoyed the trip including seeing the sites in Chicago. After that trip I convinced them to take other long distance train trips.

I believe that this station has 6 trains every day and not just two. We've been to and from Chicago going through Gilman many times. It seems like the City goes through the center of more small towns than other trains we've been on. Some towns they appear to go pretty much right in the center of town.

Love this concept. Out of curiosity, what data are you going off of for the ridership levels, and are you counting Clemson, SC and New Haven State Street towards the least used in their respective states?
@MilesinTransit3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm using the Rail Passengers Association ridership sheets: www.railpassengers.org/resources/ridership-statistics/ Despite being pretty new in terms of Amtrak service, New Haven State wasn't the least used in Connecticut in 2019! Clemson is a weirder case because it seems like post-reopening it actually is STILL the least-used in South Carolina. I'll have to think about that...

If Gilman had a wine bar next to that train station I'm virtually certain your Mom would have given it a 10/10. If it had a museum though, it still would have gotten a 1. Men should rate all bathrooms as a 10 unless completely unfunctional. I will have to have a talk with your Dad next time I see him. It's unfortunate that you lost the footage where your parents tell you about how they walked 10 miles to school every day. Finally, your Dad's move at the end, paying for himself only, well, once your Mom sees this video, he's sleeping on the couch ;) Fun stuff!!!
