I lived in Sheffield for five years, but moved to Lancashire in 1995, and so much of it is different, and yet at the heart of it all the old buildings are there too. I loved my time there, and the quirks it has, like the library lends works of art, huge canvases along with the usual things like books, records and maps.

My father's paternal side is from Sheffield, coming to Australia in the early 1900s. My grandfather is the last of our line born in England. I visited Sheffield briefly a decade ago, but plan to spend several days here next year. One place I’ll spend time is the General cemetery where my g.g.grandfather is buried, and Thornhill, Dewsbury, where St Michael's Church has memorials to our ancestors. This is a wonderful video, opening up a city I'm looking forward to getting to know.

The modern is crap, soulless ugly boxes thrown up to make profit$ for those who don't have to live with it; Sheffield is FULL of that, its embarrassing, esp around the Uni, who flatten listed buildings, ignoring 1000s who petitioned & even donated cash to save them; they just don't give one, real shame..

lovely to see Sheffield growing again. i grew up in Sheffield, as a young girl stood on Sheffield Cathedral steps with my school mates and sang Christmas songs, 1960,s. It has changed so much i hardly recognize Sheffield anymore it still has its landmarks i can recognize. Fargate was so busy the crowds made it hard to walk about.

I’ve lived in Sheffield all my life and never seen some of these places so thank you, great video!! It has made me more optimistic about town and regeneration, with a little joined up logic from the council theres real potential here, its just a pity that areas already regenerated like that beautiful area of castlegate next to the don get hardly any footfall, because what tourists or inquisitive locals are going to want to walk through the mess of fargate, castlegate and (improved, but still nothing to shout about) fitzalan square? That, and for people in the suburbs the city centre just isn’t as accessible as meadowhall due to lack of cycling infrastructure outside of the city centre, lack of free parking in town (arguably fair enoigh but-) and lack of reliable, convenient public transport to get us there. So here’s to completing that regeneration, filling retail units and extending the tram network!!

The reason thar the Moor and Fargate looked so crowded in the 50s & 60s is that everyone had to walk on the pavements as the roads were open to frantic including buses and up to 1960, the trams. Now these streets are fully pedestrianised, there is much more room to walk about.

Sheffield City centre gets worse every time I go down t' town. Fargate's become the land of the never ending construction site, every time I get off a bus round Fargate I end up thinking, "What the bleedin' hell they up to now?!" Also most of the City is pedestrianised so most elderly and infirm are driven away from going to town anymore. Used to be a good deal better when those bus stops were in service that now stand unused out by the Town Hall. It's a disgrace! 🤬 Not to mention those mini Berlin Walls dotted around the City Centre or should I say the Anti-Terrorism ramparts! It's totally driven my 80 year old Mum from staying home mostly and ordering shopping online! Well done Council!! Makes me ashamed/embarrassed to be a Sheffielder at times.
