Clovelly is a beautiful old fishing village between Bude and Bideford, perched upon a 400ft cliff top in the Torridge district of North Devon, England. Often referred to as one of the prettiest villages in the UK, Clovelly is a private estate owned by the Hamlyn family since the 18th century.
Clovelly village is known for its unique character and charm, with a labyrinth of winding, cobbled streets that are car-free. Instead, donkeys are used to carry goods up and down the steep hill.
Here are some of the top reasons to visit Clovelly:
The village is virtually unchanged from centuries ago, with traditional fisherman's cottages, a working harbour, and a timeless atmosphere. Wander the cobbled streets and soak up the history, imagining what life was like for generations of fishermen who called Clovelly home.
The historic harbour is a great place to wander around, watch the fishing boats come and go, and enjoy the views of the rugged coastline. You might even spot some lobster pots or other fishing equipment, a reminder of the village's deep-rooted maritime traditions. If you're feeling peckish, there's a great little quayside cafe where you can grab a bite to eat and watch the world go by.
Donkeys are a big part of the village's character and are a charming throwback to a bygone era. These sure-footed creatures are used to carry goods up and down the steep streets, a method that has remained unchanged for centuries. You can even take a ride on a donkey! It's a fun and unique way to experience the village and see the sights from a different perspective.
The village of Clovelly's cliff-top location offers stunning views of the Bristol Channel and the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see for miles, making it the perfect spot for a picnic or a leisurely stroll. Breathe in the fresh sea air and take in the panoramic vistas.
There are a number of independent shops in the village selling a variety of souvenirs, crafts, and local produce. Pop into a local craft shop and take home a piece of Clovelly with you, or treat yourself to some freshly caught seafood or locally made jams and chutneys. You can find traditional pubs serving hearty meals and locally brewed ales, or grab a refreshing ice cream on a sunny day.

Oh Neil thank you for taking us to Clovelly, It is breathtaking. I love the cobbles through the whitewashed homes. The sleds lined up, all different and all seemed to be handmade too! A lovely video, thanks for that, it took me right back to when i visited. I don't think you can buy property in Cloveley you rent from the owner of the village. It's a lovely place but you need to be fit to get up the hill, i did it quite a few years ago but wouldn't fancy trying now.

You have to pay to see a village? Um! A beautiful tourist attraction but impossible for people with mobility issues. Very atmospheric with the cobblestone and whitewashed buildings. Nice but I think 🤔 you'd have to be a mountain goat 🐐 to live there.
