Agreed! First time I ever heard a real leslie up close was actually 2 "tallboys" in each corner of a living room. The guy fixed old hammonds and had a chop that he gig'ed with... He started playing and when he hit that half-moon switch, both leslies spun up separately far apart like that...Talk about a wall of sound!!!

As far as "mods" go for sound routing though...I know that the guy from Soulive (Neal Evans) used to route his hammond bass pedal sounds into the lower manual since the band doesn't have a bass player. Crazy trick...
