Gimme Ten Synth pop albums (my response)

Not sure if I have ten Synth Pop albums anymore. I purged most from my collection. I do still have a bunch of 12” singles.

You showed the only Duran Duran and Erasure records I have...I should revisit both really as it's been a while. I was obsessed with 'A Little Respect' for a while in the mid-nineties. I listened to Erotic Cabaret quite recently, good album. Need to revisit that Visage also - I got my copy for a quid in Barnardos.

When I was a kid my favourite music was synth-based stuff. I had a tape, which I played to death, called Synthesiser Hits, it had non original versions of tracks by Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, Kraftwerk, and others. It was a phase I got over, but I still like a bit of well constructed synth pop...Although the nearer it gets to new romanticism the less I like it. I just hate the indiscriminate use of synths in non electronic music, they rarely work and have a tendency to date the music horribly. Cheers - Hedley

I have a friend who has a similar allergy to synths in more rock-based music. I guess the grandaddy of them all must be Van Halen's 'Jump'.

@@jamesgriffithsmusic I'm not a fan of Van Halen, but I don't have a problem with the synth used on Jump. It's a featured instrument, not trying to be anything other than a synth. What I really detest is synths being used as a kind of musical underlay, supposedly creating mood and supporting the other instruments. The only thing worse is synths being used as a replacement for strings. Horrible. Springsteen's Ghost of Tom Joad would give Nebraska a run for its money, if it wasn't for the wash of synth backing on every tune. There are always exceptions, but generally synths are bad.

I don't own it, I used to have it on pic disc but gave it back to Oxfam
