"Gimme Shelter" is the opening track to the 1969 album Let It Bleed by the Rolling Stones. It is on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list and is also the 34th best-ranked song on critics' all-time lists according to Acclaimed Music.
"Gimme Shelter" was written by the Rolling Stones' lead vocalist Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards, the band's primary songwriting team. [a] Richards began working on the song's signature opening riff in London while Jagger was away filming a Performance with Richards' then-girlfriend, Anita Pallenberg. In his autobiography Life, Richards revealed that the tension of the song was inspired by his jealousy at seeing the relationship between Pallenberg and Jagger, and his suspicions of an affair between them.

Charlie's work on that snare drum is simply phenomenal! And the way he keeps that bass drum locked right on the beat, driving the song forward like a machine, but keeping the backbeat on the snare slightly behind, is just classic Charlie. And that, is not easily duplicated. RIP Charlie!

@@johnwoods1922 I'm referring to the gigs and not recording. The Faces and Who drummer Kennedy Jones ended up in the recording not so surprisingly. His fellow Faces bandmate and soon-to-be Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood invited him to play because apparently Watts was nowhere around in December 1973, when the group was ready to record his drum parts for the song, "I don't know where Charlie was," said Ronnie. "I think he might have been in the south of France." It wasn't uncommon for Wood to just call Jones in to play whenever a drummer was needed.

Rock steady yet perfectly human. Many drummers cannot keep a steady beat like this because they want to show off their fancy fills or their laser perfection. Live humans playing music are not supposed to be perfect or super-human, they're suppose to breath a little and make the song sound good. I'd take Charlie over any of them.

Most drummers live in their moms basements and are awful musicians. Few drummers like Charlie actually understood music as it’s played successfully and well. Hence most drummers playing supposedly simple but so do all singers and guitarists unless you’re playing jazz or classical. Or some rare progressive forms of music.

Me too...I have taken up drums in old age because my hands for guitar are not what they were. Charlie was a monster who played deceptive grooves. It sounds easy until you try to play it.

And those rolls and fills would get you dismissed immediately in any band with an ounce of sense. How they turned simple slow grooves into total atmospheric trips to urban jungle settings, I really don't think it has dawned on most people yet just how genius The Stones' rhythms actually are. You can listen to a track like this for 4 decades or more and it still not hit you how unique and bizarre they were and how much of a standout their R&B tracks were relative to all their contemporaries in white and black music. They did some seriously off the wall stuff and produced soundscapes. This track, to me, is just as exotic sounding as Led Zeppelin's Kashmir yet it's about 50% more grooving. That they chose to do this tempo and layer such simple sounds as they did, magical.

@paultempany2053
@paultempany2053 Жыл бұрын
you call it grooving. In a video interview, Charlie in his shy, understated way, says 'It's about swing. A song has got to swing'. Apparently, in the biography 'According to the Rolling Stones', Charlie had surprising control about whether a song progressed, and how, and if it was recorded. It had to swing! And there are a few tracks he doesn't play on because he couldn't get it how he liked (or a few where he wasn't available). So practically and creatively, much more impact than I imagined, and I'm a big fan!
@tasteapiana
@tasteapiana Жыл бұрын
@@paultempany2053 I use the word groove because it's centered on a pulse which is not obvious in the meter. For the first half of this piece Charlie is slightly behind every stringed instrument, about 10-15ms delay and it doesn't seem like he was playing to a click or pre-recorded tracks so it has to be total swing in his mind to deliver such consistent swung meter. However, by the second half he is stepping right on top of the strings with kick and snare while retaining the swung fills. The fills are as if he is aiming at a layer of air about 10'' above his toms and cymbals which represents perfect time, the continued motion to when the sticks then meet the skins is that 10-15ms delay. The first big fill he lands squarely on the beat and that shows me he KNEW what he was doing. By pulse I mean that odd pumping and breathing thing you can only hear (as a listener) about 2 blocks down the street outside of a venue, that ocean swell kind of rhythmic fluctuation. I believe Charlie was innately sensitive to pulse modulation without having the wordage to convey it. He knew how things like meter, swung or straight, translate to someone in the back of the room or down an alley 2 blocks away. He also knew how to step out of the way of 3 or 4 different string players yet keep them from running too far ahead. Dude's pulse modulation skills, his ability to groove, were bordering upon the magical.

Yep, but I'll raise you one Jumpin' Jack Flash.. and it does get better.. ..the tempo is up right away and still getting rushed a bit all the way into somewhere around the 12-15th measure, the two guitars are a bit squirrely, not locked in the pocket, but still has that magical Stones thing going that you can't get when everyone is locked to a click. Then Charlie Watts settles into THE BEAT. And the beauty of the whole pocket of JJF is not Watt's uncanny feel (anyone can play that beat but find just one that can bring that feel) but rather the pulling and pushing of three entirely different rhythms... Wyman's bass pattern is nowhere near the kick pattern, neither is the signature guitar riff (that every cover any band ever played of the tune locks in on and all play THAT rhythm together, guitar, bass, and kick/snare) but Wyman is playing a pattern in complete contrast with Charlie's kick and he drones on a single note, while Keith and Brian Jones literally build the inversion everyone tries to play when copying, all guitar players play it as a single, moving riff. The Stones guitars build it out of three, maybe, four smaller note groups of root/fifth in octaves, on acoustic guitars, open and Nashville tuned, an electric, and there IS a piano in the low octive of the riff they make, together on stacked tracks... and these three contrasting rhythm signatures, the kick drum, the bass guitar pattern, and the guitars/piano together begin to push and pull against each other to rock like no motherfu***** before that time had ever rocked, when Charlie Watts' snare locks in, pulls it all together and The Stones had concocted a new sound that in 1968, Rolling Stone Magazine, upon hearing this new, non-album track, single release by the Stones, called this "Jumpin' Jack Flash" "a Supernatural Delta Blues by way of swinging London" . If you think I ramble, I'm recently retired from a 47 year, full time career in production the the music industry, I consider myself a well learned student of rock and roll production/arrangements, and that pocket is one of the most unique, unmatched grooves of alltime. Easy to play? nothing to it... Make it feel like that? We all can wish. I've spent hours just studying its simple yet impossible feel. Just clear your head, close your eyes and listen. It's not just Charlie's beat or pattern, it's the feel of that drum beat that is unique and unparalleled ... Charlie Watts' pocket on the original, 1968 recording of JJF is both the "Shroud of Turin" and the "Dead Sea Scrolls" of the Rock and Roll drum beat.

@@mr-nr4td Speaking of Wyman, there’s a version of “Gimme Shelter” out there that is supposedly an “extended” take. The instrumental intro goes on a few extra measures and really shows off Wyman’s subtlety and skill. Maybe someone concocted the version with software, but it sure sounds great.

The secret of Charlie's groove is the fact that he was a listener...he always followed Keith rather than setting the tempo himself as other bands do, which is why there's always that microscopic delay before the snare. He's hitting it in response to what the guitar's doing.

Maybe cos he couldn’t really do that very well. I’m sure you know the stories of Jimmy Miller playing on some songs because Charlie couldn’t get the groove. He was a basic drummer.

Keith is the lead, Wyman plays ahead, and Charlie plays behind the beat. Theres so much to listen to with the stones music. Hes actually one of the least steady drummers, hes always speeding up or slowing down, but you never notice it in a bad way, its always in the pocket. The Stone's chemistry is like a living breathing entity.. lol. And if you ever see live videos of him playing hes always watching Keith

This was Great .... RIP Charlie Watts. As a resurrected "Drummer", playing after more than a 50 year Hiatus from 1969, playing with HS Buddies in a Garage Band, now retired and enjoying playing drums again for personal pleasure, I play Stones Music in order to play along to. His drumming is solid, basic , with absolute Tempo keeping style. He never did Solos, he never needed to. I'm looking forward to many other comparable YT videos of Isolated Watts' drumming. He did not need to Over Drum in tunes (Kenny Aronoff is a similar category ). Charlie's Drumming should be a MUST for all Beginners , in fact for all Drummers to listen to and Digest .

I _adore_ the sound of this kit! Listen to how important the ambiance of that small bright studio room is, to the drum track. And these were days before a kick drum was supposed to have so much low frequency it induces a bowel movement. Here it's just another drum played by the foot. The whole set works so great as a unit. Charlie's not playing anything hard, and he's not metronome-perfect; but it feels great, and the groove is fresh and a bit unusual. You can't deny: this song would not be the same, with any other drummer.
@yummyyum36719
@yummyyum36719 2 жыл бұрын
Being a classical musician who also loves classic rock I would say that what is missing now in pop music is NON metronomic drumming...the push and pull that real drummers give a song's tempo is part of the magic. Charlie does that here. Yes it would not work with a click track, but it is not meant to work with a click track. What I hate about modern production is the idea that auto tune and perfect metronomic music is "better".
